What "new and improved" things do you find better and what things do you find worse? Ok, those "constant tension" shower curtain rods are crap. I want a spring tension rod. I have one in the basement bathroom and the stupid thing keeps falling down. Gonna search for one with a spring. Newer isn't always better!

"New and improved!" I often find that slogan is just meant to make people buy more crap that doesn't work!
As for your curtain rods, you should find something that is an extension style with two tubes sliding into each other and flange at the end with screw holes so you can attach it to the wall. Those with tension spring are bound to fail in the first day.
