Well, today's the day. We're going to see if Jackson gets along with Macy. Fingers crossed. I suspect he will. Congratulations on the new dog! Hopefully so. He was pretty mean to Bear when we had him. But Bear is a lot smaller and another boy. I'm hoping that because Macy is more Jackson's size and his sister, he'll be nicer. And for those wondering, Bear is loving living in NC with Thing 1. He's getting so big and learning a lot of stuff. They're even planning on coming home in May and bringing him with them. I can't wait to see my baby.

Here's Andi's photo of Jackson. Very good looking pup. How'd you come to name him Jackson?

you guys, I think my golden might be depressed. she's been super mopey at home with either me or my roommate, except when she melts down for a few minutes when we first get home. she's happy as a clam when we're out and about, especially at the dog park (obviously) but I'm kind of wondering if time in the house while we're doing chores or whatever, piled on top of not getting nearly as many treats/fruits and veggies in an effort to help her shed a few pounds is taking its toll. she was super lazy with me as I slept through my alarm this morning, was pretty mopey until we went to the park, and then just flopped like a rag doll as soon as we got back to the house and I had to get ready to leave for work. thoughts? just kind of wondering if I need to have the vet look into anything when I take them in next week for shots and stuff. this is new to me. I mean, I get it that it sucks that they have to be home alone for a few hours, but the mopes have gotten bad the past couple of weeks.

but ask what? I mean, they are going in for annual checkups/shots anyway. can I really ask if it's possible that she's depressed? I feel silly even asking that.

Well, guys. It looks like we're getting another dog. Jackson went right up to her and gave her kisses which I've never seen him do to any other dog he's played with. He was respectful and gentle. She is shy, but a very sweet girl. She's also much smaller than him, so he'll have to be mindful of that, but everyone is smaller than him.

Animals definitely feel sadness and depression. DH's cat has only now stopped looking for him and meowing at his clothes. I have the last three voicemails DH left me and I listened to them last night. The cat recognized his voice and went around looking for him. ☹️ I didn't mean to make him feel sad.

So I got the scoop on Macy. I guess the final straw in returning her was when she bit the small child for riding her like a horse "doing what kids do" in her previous owner's words. Who does that?! I guess the wife made him take her back because she'd had enough which leads me to believe that it wasn't an isolated incident. She'll be in a much better place here with us.

I know that the golden was just over the moon that I was suddenly home during the day, at first. now that I'm doing a project chore or a few just daily ones in the morning, she's all kinds of mopey. she loves the time at the park, and the ride to get there, but then turns into a lump once we're home again. I don't really know what else I can do about that, since I do have to go to work....

She more than likely smells like their mother. I knew it would go good.

I wish I could have gotten a picture of Macy to show you. They wouldn't let me take my phone into the prison. I'll have to get you guys one when I bring her home.

andi9899, when do you get Macy to bring her home ? I'll het her later on in the week next week. I need to order her a crate. I found a bigger one than I got Jackson online for almost half the price. Jackson will get the new crate and Macy will get the smaller one. I also want to make a vet appointment so I can take her directly to the vet when I get her. I also want her to have a few days at home with us before she goes to daycare with Jackson.

Chiver, two year old retrievers still need a lot of exercise. Is the dog crated during the day?

Chiver, two year old retrievers still need a lot of exercise. Is the dog crated during the day? nope, free reign of most of the house. they like to wrestle as well. they are home for 4-5 hours in the middle of the day when roommate and I are both at work. he's home around 5 most days, and I leave by 1. when I'm home, we either dog park it for an hour (plus the excitement of all the people we meet doing errands along the way) or go for at least a 2-mile walk near the house. it's been the park lately bc the walk path is a wind tunnel. I don't know what my roommate does, other than plays with them in the backyard, which is a pretty good size. I found some trails before the last storm that I intend to check out with them, in the woods. that will be something different. tonight was depressing for me....I walked in, and because I didn't let her melt down right away (wearing a dress, didn't want to just plop down on the floor like usual) she hopped up on the couch and just glared at me. so attention has to be part of this. idk...

other than my new work hours, no. roommate's been a little moody as he works though a few things (not a topic for this thread...) but that's it.
I will say this, though. she hopped up on my bed and has stayed while I have basketball on quietly with the sleep timer (I'm wide awake and sipping a glass of wine to help the unwind process) but I have the lights off. she is sprawled out at the foot of the bed, kind of butted up against my leg. the past few nights, she's been leaving and curling up in the living room. last night, she was crying for a little bit until I got up and gave her a pillow since she wouldn't budge. when I woke up this morning, she was at my feet again.

Jackson hasn't eaten yet today except for the treats I gave him. He's also been lounging around most of the time. He usually just picks at his food during the day and eats a whole bowl in the evening and has been fairly active when he's gone outside, so I'm not super worried just yet. If I haven't witnessed him eating by tomorrow, he's going to the vet.

He's finally eating! Who waits until 9:30 at night to eat for the first time? I can rest assured my skinny baby has food in him. I don't restrict his food or water and he still eats like that. I'll be interested to see how Macy behaves. She's had her food restricted her whole life so far.

He would only eat when I was settled in for the night and the house was quiet. He was a huge dog (not fat, just big) in his prime; the vet said he was just an easy keeper. My girl dog inhales any food available and acts like she's not been fed for days no matter how much she's eaten.

Little Dog either snarfs the whole bowl before I put it down, or it sits there all day. many nights I'll come home from work and he'll be chowing on dinner (6:30pm) as I'm settling in to bed around 1130. but it's also pretty cyclical. so maybe that's the pattern Jackson is settling into.

andi9899, maybe he had an upset tummy, and geez poor Macy that poor dog has had barriers around her, her whole damn life. I know. We're excited to get her home and start spoiling her. I took Friday off so that she could have a long weekend with us before she has to settle in to a routine. I also want to see where we need to do some work. I asked about aggression in general and with food, and the lady at the shelter said she hasn't shown any aggression so far and they've had her for a month noe. So hopefully she just needs flat out spoiling.
