So I just called my CC company to get a replacement card for one I accidentally shredded. Here's how the call went...(conversation slightly embellished for humor's sake) [automated system]: Welcome to the F*cktard Bank automated system. Please enter or say your 16 digit account number, or say you don't know it. [me]: I don't know it (because I shredded the effing card). [automated system]: That's ok. Please enter or say your SSN. [me]: *enters SSN* [automated system]: I'm sorry. We can't recognize that number since you are using a modern cell phone instead of an old-timey corded phone from the 70s that beeps a lot. Please enter or say your SSN. [me]: *quietly says SSN* [automated system]: I'm sorry. We can't recognize your response. Please enter or say your SSN. [me]: *says SSN* [automated system]: I'm sorry. Please say your SSN louder so everyone in earshot can hear it. [me]: *says SSN* [automated system]: I'm sorry. Please say your SSN again so everyone in earshot can memorize it. [me]: *says SSN* [automated system]: I'm sorry. Please say your SSN again so the shifty-eyed Eastern European maintenance guy who's doing work down the hall can hear it. [me]: *says SSN* [automated system]: I'm sorry. Please say your SSN again so the shifty-eyed Eastern European maintenance guy who's doing work down the hall can bust out a pen and paper and write it down. [me]: *says SSN* [automated system]: Thank you. Please wait while we transfer you. ... [Customer Service Rep]: Hello, welcome to F*cktard Bank, where we strive to be the industry leaders in f*cktardery. Can you please verify your SSN?

Do you have on-line access to the bank which holds your cc?

Do you have on-line access to the bank which holds your cc? Yeah, that was my thought. Go on-line and find one of your statements, which will have the account number. I've lost the card I use most 3 times in the last 5 months (once drove off with it sitting on the back of the car after buying gas). Fortunately, no fraudulent charges. DH was on the accounts, too- it was good for tracking down the account number since he had a card, too, but one of these days I have to get him off the accounts.

How do you "accidentally" shred a credit card? I did once. We got new cards. I put the new card on the desk. Later I thought it was the old card and I had taken it out to shred. Shredded the new card.

Additionally, you should be able to order a new card on the bank's on-line site too. Separately, you should write down your personal credit card numbers and security codes (on the back) and store in a safe place..

Years ago, I had ordered a new AmEx card and did a balance transfer to pay off some high interest balances (0% for the life of the balance....never to be seen again!). I immediately destroyed the card, as this was in a time where any new purchases got charged interest at the higher rate and none of your payments went against those charges. While I was paying it off, I switched over to online bill pay, and I needed the full account number (on all the bills, AmEx has XX'ed out all but the last 4 numbers) to put into the bank's website. So I called AmEx to get the number and only way I could get the number was to order a new card!

At least AmEX no longer shows your full account number on online statements either. I didn't think so, so just went online to check. Neither does my USAA Visa.

I've always had to call to get a replacement card. I'm wondering if it's so a human can look over your recent charges and see if there's anything suspicious (although the cardholder should be doing that, too). What annoys me is that they take their time getting a new card to you unless you pay $50 for faster service. It pretty much means I have to keep an alternative card around since I like the convenience and rewards of charging everything and paying it off in full each month.

How do you "accidentally" shred a credit card? With my credit union, I have both a credit and a debit card. They sent me a replacement debit card but the color scheme was so different that I thought it was a replacement for the credit card, didn't look closely or check the numbers and then shredded the"old" credit card. So now I have two debit cards and no credit card.
