At times when I turn on computer..it's old but works fine for me..a desk top...the fan comes on and does not stop..does not connect with monitor..usually I just reboot or recently switch off power and then when switch back on after counting to say 10 everything is fine...little frustrating but nothing I can't handle.. Today, this AM computer was fine..then for some reason I shut it off and later, when turned computer back on..fan just kept running..and running...and just.. ..tried numerouse times the on /off with power but same thing so upset but was going to pull all the hookups to tower and bring in for service......
had company come in..Sister in Law and her grand son..my cousin, IVAN, 13 years old from Russia...nephew married Russian Girl..didn't work out but he's great Dad, Ivan comes in every Summer to stay in Maine..antique business and over Christmas..he's 5' 11", slim, so handsome......speaks great English had a great visit..going back home the 15th...
any way back to computer...went back to computer ready to tear all connections off, tried once more..computer had been off over a hour..VIOLA...fan went on, then off and computer is fine now..any ideas of why.

Does it beep at all when it's starting up? Sometimes the beep pattern can tell you what the problem is.

Anytime my fan keeps running like that, I take a can of compressed air to it. That usually clears off the dust and it functions again normally. Worth a shot, if you haven't tried it already.

Follow the instructions on the can and don't shake it up or use it too close to your machine. If you don't want to wait on Amazon, you can usually find it at Walmart and any office supply store. And, then you can use it on all the other little places that you can't get to, like bathroom vents and air returns, that could probably benefit from a good dusting as well.

Dezi-if it is really old, and if you decide to get a new computer, think about getting an all-in-one computer. All the guts that are built into a tower are now behind the computer screen. The screen is not heavy like the tower. So all you will have is the screen/monitor, keyboard and mouse. And you can buy a wireless keyboard and mouse for it too. It would look like the below:

Somethings probably blocking the vents. Dust or something else.
Another possibility is if there's more than one fan and one died or doesn't work all the time, so the other has to work more.
Or the fan is going bad and you just hear it now...pretty sure the fans always run all the time.

Sounds like an overheated power-supply module (dozens of reasons it could have overheated). Once they start failing (constant boot-up problems, beginning with occasionally, then often, then usually, then every time, et cetera...) they never stop... until they just simply die completely.

Yep, you need to take the cover off and clean it out. We do that a couple times a yr. no matter what. Even just vacuuming the fan intake will usually help too! You wouldn't believe how much can accumulate in there.

I agree with the others. Get some compressed air and clean everything well. Also make sure nothing is blocking the vents, I.e. the computer fan vent is up against the wall.
