Yesterday was a spend. In addition to everything else, an issue with our current family legal situation came up on Monday, and an emergency meeting had to be scheduled for yesterday. Similar meetings in the past have been very stressful and I haven't necessarily been safe to drive after, so I had a friend come with me. We got to the location early, so I bought each of us a smoothie. It was a stressful day that I couldn't really have planned in advance for. And since we are 2/3 of the way through the month, and it's only my second spend day, I am really okay with that.

June Update: 6NSDs and 5CSDsI have been staying pretty close to home and getting as much done at home as possible. I know that I will have several spend days coming up as I have a craft weekend coming up and I know that involve hotel and other expenses. I have money put aside for it and think that I can cash flow it. I was able to cash flow the craft weekend and I have a little left to start the fund for next year's event. Also I finally broke down and got the Roomba that I have had my eye on for several months. Other than that I have stayed pretty close to home. TS Cindy helped in that area as many of the streets in certain areas had some flooding.

This is going to be a very stressful week, with some pretty big things happening on Wednesday and Friday, which is why I am thinking they might end up spend days. However, even if they are, that puts me at only 4 for the month, and that would be okay. Working to get NSDs today and tomorrow in order to meet my goal for the month.

Got the other NSD yesterday. Helped that Roomie took us out to lunch for C's birthday, and other friends brought over a ready to cook lasagna for us to make tonight. Today's stress went really as well as it could have, and I did not buy anything. I am now at work, where I have everything I need. So there's a good chance I'll get another NSD today. I am moving my eating lunch on campus from tomorrow to Friday, because it looks like a friend of mine who also works on campus will be able to have lunch with me on Friday.

Ended up with an NSD for yesterday. I beat my goal for the first time in a few months! This morning, I have already gotten my starbucks. I have copay for counseling this afternoon. And it turns out I forgot to pack a drink for lunch, so I'll be heading over to the bookstore (the least expensive drinks on my part of campus) later today to get a drink. That will end up making today a spend, for poor planning/not thinking as I walked out the door. But that's okay.

Counting yesterday as a spend because I forgot to pack a complete lunch. Oddly, I thought I might have two spend days this week, but one ended up an NSD, and today looks to be just the planned CSD. Which is good. So for this month, I will have gone over my NSD goal for the first time in a while, and be under my Spend goal. Both of these things make me happy.

Monday was a CSD - Starbucks and I bought lunch for the skeleton staff that was in the office Tuesday was a Spend. It should have been a No Spend, but late in the afternoon I decided I really wanted something from the grocery store. And I am glad I went, because it was the last day of a REALLY good sale on Coke products, so I picked up another 4 12 packs of the variety I drink. Roomie E's birthday is tomorrow, but we have other plans for tomorrow night, so we might end up going out to dinner tonight for that.

Starbucks only yesterday. Going for a No Spend today. Realized that a concert I bought Pop Tart tickets for (for Christmas) is this Sunday, so Sunday plans have changed to include dinner, parking, and probably a concert T.

Yesterday was not a good day. And we ended up buying a Papa Murphys pizza for dinner, and then getting tickets for a showing a Spiderman tonight, in order to celebrate roomie E's birthday, so it turned into a spend. And after not sleeping well pretty much any night this week, I get myself a chai at Starbucks this morning. We'll likely spend some money at the movie tonight, too.

I have been doing ok with the controlled and no spending routine. On the whole I have spent mainly on food and gas with the exception of the Roomba for which I have been saving and the plane ticket I needed to purchase to visit family. I have put that off for a few years and needed to go this year. I am enjoying the convenience of using the Roomba a lot. My other expenditures have been ones that are the routine for this time of year -- medical, supplemental medical insurance, semiannual car insurance, and household needs such as AC filters. Also I needed to get some items for the yard and the plants that need to be re-potted. Unfortunately tomorrow I know will be a spend as my TV of many years has decided to die on me this week. I will be purchasing one tomorrow while they are on sale right after I pick up meds that have been renewed and/or ordered for me. I hope that this will be the end of the major expenditures for a while. I have been encouraged to set up an etsy shop and am currently working on getting that up and running. I am not expecting much from it but will be happy if it is well received. shanendoah -- I know that things have been tough recently but you have weathered the storm in the past and you have a plan.. Remember one step at a time.

Okay, calling Friday through Sunday CSDs. Friday I had Starbucks, a friend paid for dinner, and then we spent around $10 on snacks at the movie. Saturday we didn't buy groceries, but I did run to Target and get only 2 items - a new tension rod for our shower (the one we had stopped keeping tension), and a drying rack so that I could dry some clothes outside in the sun. Sunday I did NOT buy breakfast. I did buy dinner for myself and Pop Tart, pay for parking, and some snacks at the concert, but we did not get a concert T. However, I got home after 11pm last night, and still got up for work at 5:45a this morning, so I will be heading down for Starbucks here shortly. That should be the only spend for today.

Ended up at Urgent Care last night. I've been having a skin issue around one of my eyes, which I've had before, but has also gone away really quickly before, which this time around was just getting worse and started to actively hurt yesterday. Diagnosis is some sort of Excema, and I was given a hydro-cortisone ointment to put on it. I'll still count it as a CSD, because medical expenses are always needs in my book. Good news is that the cream appears to work pretty instantly for me. I woke up this morning and the skin around my eye was significantly improved (and no pain). Today is Starbucks and CostCo, possibly groceries. Tomorrow I drive 1.5 hours to a wedding, so I don't think I'll be spending. Sunday is up in the air.

Friday went as planned. Saturday was going as planned until I realized that while the wedding started at 3:30p, the reception and dinner wouldn't start until 6p, and I was still driving home (1.5 hours). I left at 5:30p, and ended up grabbing dinner from a food truck with friends. Calling it a spend day. However, Sunday ended up being a No Spend Day, so at least there's that. Today C has a dental appt at 10:45, which should put him done and near me for lunch, so the plan is to have lunch together. We did not do any grocery shopping this weekend, so may need to stop by the store and grab a couple things to supplement the pantry this week.

shanendoah - You are doing so well keeping track of things. Hope that the eye area is better. I have been keeping busy as much as possible at home so that limits the amount of spending I do as I rarely shop online. I will need to pick up a few items at the grocery this week including a gift card for DS birthday but other than that I think I will be ok on the spending front. I may still have a few medical bills coming in sometime in the future ans still have at least two appointments and two lab tests to take. I am up to date with all of the bills but several monthly ones should come in within the next week or so. Insurance is done for a few months. Beginning to take a breath. I do have a few craft shows to send in the entry fees and will do one this month and the other next month. I am making the adjustment to retirement a little at a time. It is a good thing that I am naturally frugal as my income has dropped close to 60-70%. I placed myself on a clothing diet as I think I have enough in the closet to last for a while. I will be living in tees and jeans/leggings for a while unless I have an appointment or meeting friends.

moneysquirrel - My eye is much better. The hydro-cortisone ointment really did work like magic. Which was nice. As for the tracking, life is so out of my control right now, in emotionally huge ways, that I am grabbing on to any coping mechanism I have. Tracking spending, and trying to keep some control over that, is one of those mechanisms.
I am glad retirement is treating you well, so far. And I say, if you're meeting friends, stick with the jeans and t-shirts. (But that may be because I am at work in jeans and t-shirt today.)

Yesterday went as planned. However we also got news yesterday that pretty much threw the plan for the rest of the week out the window. This morning, I got a drink and a donut from an on campus vendor. I'm calling it controlled (so far) because I used my campus card. But I have really no idea what the rest of this week is going to look like, and, honestly, I am not going to be thinking about the dollars.

Wednesday ended up being a spend because the Beagle got my hairbrush and decided it would be a really good chew toy. So, off to Fred Meyer I went to get a new hairbrush, and I also got a couple bags of the giant marshmallows. However on Thursday, we didn't leave the house. So NSD there. Today I am working from home (no Starbucks), so I am aiming to make it another NSD. Tomorrow, we are going to see a movie. And there will likely be grocery shopping. And that's what I've got for now.

(But that may be because I am at work in jeans and t-shirt today.) shanendoah -- Glad the eye is improving. I also like control over things so I understand the tracking. I have been living daily with my Excel spreadsheets. When DH was declared terminal over 11 years ago I needed a way to keep track of all of the things that he did. He helped me as I created my notebook of things I needed to know -- who to call, etc. I still update that notebook yearly and use excel for the financial management of almost everything. After a few years I realize how fortunate I was to have the ability to use the tools and adjust them to suit my needs. As for the jeans and meeting friends. Sometimes we end up going out for lunch and I usually prefer to at least wear a nicer blouse than a tee. I usually wear jeans or some other denim pants. They are my staple go-to. This week I spent at the grocery -- perishables and gift card , Walgreens to pick up RX and 1 item from Amazon. Needed to get a postal scale as I plan on getting on Etsy in the near future. Need to keep challenging myself to try something new.

When you set up your budget for the week for your fun money and you don't spend it, what do you do? Do you not take out the next week's amount or do you put the leftover in an account for another agenda. This only happens to me about once a month so I'm not reducing the amount.

YNAB tells you that any money left in a specific line item i.e. gasoline is rolled over and added into the next month. Now, YNAB also says, if you over spend in May for gas by $50 you deduct $50 from the following month.
YNAB according to BG....I do what I want.

When you set up your budget for the week for your fun money and you don't spend it, what do you do? Do you not take out the next week's amount or do you put the leftover in an account for another agenda. This only happens to me about once a month so I'm not reducing the amount. 3catsladyJust a few suggestions -- - Add some to next week's amount for those items in the future that might cost a little more.
- Add some to another agenda
- Save it in a separate area for a special treat or as a small EF
- Put it aside for future gifts
You might do a combination of these depending upon the amount. Even a few dollars a month can make a difference. Over several months the amount might be enough for a child's gift or a gift card. I know that the movie theaters near me has gift cards for as little as $5.00.

Friday was a spend because we went out to dinner. We also did some grocery shopping. Saturday was the movie and a trip to Trader Joes, so a CSD. Sunday and Monday were both NSDs. Today, I'll be getting a Starbucks, and probably another drink in the afternoon, as I have a 4 hour training this afternoon. Thursday I have a plan of going to see Atomic Blonde with some friends. Beyond that, things are very stressful and up in the air in life, so every day is just day to day. I've got no real plan for anything, at least for now.

Tuesday was Starbucks, another drink, a snack, and then pizza for dinner, making it a spend day. Yesterday was a No Spend Day. There will be Starbucks today and a movie tonight.

Hi all, I have been staying at home a lot due to either the rain (monsoon at times) and/or heat. Also only trying to get those items that I need. Ran to WM this morning to get two items but got a third that I needed as well so I am counting it as a CS. Not bad to get out of there spending less then $9. The last week including today was 4 NS and 3 CS days. An one of the CS days was due to a new RX so had little choice and/or control over that one.

I am planning on changing how I track for August, but I am not yet certain exactly how I will do it. My life is going to have some very significant changes in August. The day to day routine is going to look nearly identical, but the emotional landscape will have completely changed. My coping mechanisms (and staying in control of our finances, tracking what we spend, etc is most definitely one of my coping mechanisms) will be more important than ever. So I definitely need to keep tracking. The problem for me has been chasing the No Spend Day. Instead of spending when it makes sense in our schedule/the flow of the week, I've tried to lump spending together - Oh, I have therapy on Tuesday, so Tuesday will be a good day to buy Starbucks, go out to dinner, etc, because it is already a CSD. And I do this even if I prefer to get Starbucks on Mon/Wed/Fri, or our schedule says Thursday would be the better night to go out to dinner, etc. Or I think - I've already fallen off the wagon today and made it a Spend day, so I might was well spend on something else, too. Right now, chasing the No Spend Day isn't actually helping me spend less. I'm just organizing my spending around getting No Spend Days, even if that does not make sense with how the week is looking.
So I am thinking of no longer tracking by day, but instead by week. I'll list what I plan on spending on that week - CostCo, groceries, 1 dinner out, 3 Starbucks, 1 lunch out, therapy co-pay, movie - and maybe give myself a small allowance of $5-10 for unplanned spending, and then just track how I do by week - did I manage to keep to the plan or not. If I get a No Spend Day, that's great, but I'm not going to chase them.
Still trying to figure out exactly the details, because I need the accountability of tracking and reporting. It helps me tremendously, but I also need a system that works a little better than the current one is working for me.
