I've been watching The Makeover Guy on YouTube. Although I don't like all the transformations, the majority of them are pretty amazing. I am incredibly jealous (but happy for them, jealous in a positive way) of how good most of them look after the transformation. I checked his website and the price for a makeover is insane, in my opinion. Besides, I don't live anywhere near his saloon. Between the price, air ticket and hotel, it's just not doable for me.
I am currently trying to make positive changes in my life and pamper and better myself. A makeover would be great at this point. It would boost my confidence.
But I don't know where to turn to get the full service I want. I see plenty of beauty saloons around here, but they mostly offer services like hair, nails, waxing, etc. None of them seems to offer a full makeover.
Have you ever thought about getting a makeover? And how would you go about it?

I let my hairdresser have free reign and liked what she did.

No. I'm pretty kick ass as it is. Aside from a few unwanted pounds, I'm pretty happy with myself. Only I can get rid of those. If you can't tell, I'm a bit enamored with myself.
Do you have a well dressed friend to help? If not, go to a nice clothing store and try on the outfits on the mannequins. There are plenty of makeup tutorials on you tube. You could always post pics and we could help.

I'm self taught. No started with watching what not to wear paying particular attention to episodes involving short skinny women.
Then I started playing around with blogs. Inside out is my favorite.
I eventually just took the plunge. I take a common sense approach. If I go "ugh" when I try it on it stays on the rack. If I say "oh" I will get it.
Goodwill is great. I can experiment with my look for very little money.
I dyed my hair red several years ago. It's just hair it'll grow back or I can pay to change the color again. I went to the local beauty school so again I could play for not a lot of money.
Now I'm blond.
Found out crazy colors are not an at home job. Decided I don't want to pay to do it professionally. Thinking about maybe having my ends dyed a funky color. Cheaper and if I don't like it I can get it cut off.

Yeah, i'm not sure where you'd go for a full-service makeover.
Makeup - book a makeover appointment at sephora. Hair - go to the nicest salon you can find and just tell them to have at it. Clothes - nordstrom has free personal shoppers. Are you still plus sized? If so I highly recommend Gwynnie Bee. You sign up and get X number of clothes at a time with unlimited trade ins. I get 3 items at home at a time and get new clothes at least once a week for $75/month. For the price of one dress i get probably 6+ outfits. It's been great both to try new things and also refine what i think looks good on me. If you really love something you buy it for a discount, otherwise just wear as much as you want and return. I'm in the smallest size now and if I lose any more weight i won't be able to use the service any more which will make me sad.

I've signed up and looked at their items before, but never followed through and started the subscription service. I think you get 3 clothing items and 2 accessories items at a time, and you can keep them as long as you want, send them back and get new items as frequently as you want, or send back what you don't want and buy what you want to keep at a discounted rate.

Merle Norman also does free make-up. I like the products and the owner where I buy the products is very talented. Many of the larger beauty parlors also have someone who does make-up. Nordstrom, Macy's, Talbots, Ann Taylor, and Chicos (more casual) have people who are trained to help you build an outfit that you can add to that gives you multiple choices. Personally, I prefer a classic look, and since I am petite, that style fits my body type.

I like the idea of a "full service"; getting everything done by a professional.
I may have to go piece-meal about it. Probably go to a high end saloon and let them do a haircut and color. Then ask my local stylist to maintain it. I would also want to have my eyebrows done. I've been doing them myself but when professionally done they look fantastic and can really change your face.
For makeup I would probably use YouTube.
For clothes and accessories I don't know what I'll do. Probably look up a tutorial by a stylist on You Tube.
But the idea of a full makeover sounds great to me.
And it's not that I don't like myself, I just want to look more put together and be as good looking as I can be.

I went through my own make-over this summer. I was the most I've ever weighed on Memorial Day, so I set a goal to exercise 7xweek and eat better. I lost 30 lbs by September and felt much better about myself. I drank 2 gallons of water a day and went to the dermatologist instead of getting sucked into buying over-priced Rodan & Fields products- and got a prescription for tretenoin. Walgreens helped me out with a coupon so that cost $60 instead of $300. Then I started buying nice looking, but reasonably priced clothes again. My go-to store is The Limited since I don't have time to shop in stores and I can easily buy online. $30 is about as much as I spend on any single item, with most shirts being half that price. I got my hair cut and I actually blow it dry again. I wear it long and it's thick and naturally wavy. I'm not going grey yet, so I just embrace my natural color until I have to start hiding grays. I went to the eye doctor and got a new contact lens prescription. Finally, I bought some new make-up for my office and home. I take good care of my teeth and eyebrows.
Fortunately, Stacey and Clinton never ambushed me during my work-from-home, glasses, mom-bun, over-grown eye brows, elastic waist pants and baggy shirts days.
Good luck!

I did my clothes a little at a time. Unfortunately I don't have the social life I used to have so I have things to wear just nowhere to wear them but I was determined once I purged to have nothing in my closet that didn't make me feel happy when I put it on. I'd rather have one pair of jeans that I feel super in than five pair that don't fit right and make my butt look like I've got a weird one. One book I used was a book I saw in a brow and eyelash studio. Yes, I get mine dyed monthly. It was for women over 50 but it has good tips for any age. Make sure your teeth are as white as possible. Yellow teeth are aging as well as unattractive. No French nails anymore. Very passé. But a light nude color looks clean, young, and professional. Only dark colored jeans. A great fitting white shirt. I hit Nordstrom Rack and got two pair of almost $500 boots, black and brown, for around $100 each. Those boots are quality items and look fantastic. I have three good purses that I spent good money on. A few inexpensive clutches. Spend the money on good shoes and a good watch. Just some thoughts. I've found that when you ask a stylist for advice it's a crap shoot and I've never been lucky there. I look for pictures of hair I like. Then I show it to them and get their opinion. A good one will tell you your hair won't do that. Or that it will.

Watching "what not to wear" did wonders for my wardrobe. TLC has the shows online.

Do you suffer from acne or some other skin condition? AFAIK, Tretinoin is prescribed only for skin diseases and for leukemia and one can't get prescription without a cause.

No, my skin is great and I have no health conditions. I just needed a sreening and I wanting some that actually worked to prevent fine lines. Maybe that isn't the name of it, but it is some retinoid cream.

Salon not saloon. You could go to a saloon for a makeover, I suppose, but the results would be interesting, to put it mildly

The most important part of my "make over" I feel is that I had to embrace myself. There are looks I admire but those people are not ME. I've tried too hard in the past to conform because after all that's the "right" thing to do and surely I'll look better/feel better if I copy whatever I think is the approved look.
Lately I've been getting back in touch with my creative side.
I've had to change my forms of expression as my lifestyle has changed. I can't wear a lot of rings anymore, it is a safety hazard at work. Wearing big earrings around small children is incredibly stupid if I want to keep my earlobes.
So my creativity comes out in my shoes. It comes out in small details of my clothing like spikes on the shoulders of a leopard print cardigan. I learned about 'statement" pieces and can now work an entire outfit around a single accessory if I want. Right now my outfit is worked around a necklace I found in the Old Market this weekend.
For awhile I tried really hard to be "normal" because I thought that was what I SHOULD want in my clothing. I thought I should want a small capsule wardrobe of only "classic" pieces as listed by the internet.
Nope that's too boring for me. It doesn't make me happy. I am a clothes horse so I have many different "capsules" in my wardrobe . My current necklace is a beaded necklace with little ears of corn. It's definetly not everyone's cup of tea and will raise eyebrows but who gives a crap? I like it and if you know me then you get it.
You may not want to wear a necklace of little ears of corn. That is fine. It's about what do YOU want to wear?
Also keep in mind that fashion and style are NOT the same thing. Fashion is very fleeting and is not tailored to individuals. Style lasts much longer and is about what you want your clothes to say about YOU. Once I knew the difference it became a lot easier to craft my wardrobe and shop.

At 70 just try to keep myself up. I've been lucky that good clothes always fit me well. I used to wear stylish shoes but now with foot issues I wear what I can walk in. I do have some expensive boots that look good and are all leather but my feet hurt pretty quickly.
DD and I have good coats, I have scads of nice sweaters, many from Lands End over time. I don't go anywhere to wear really nice things anymore. Yesterday was so cold I had on insulated underwear under sweats, yes they were nice but sweats!! Yugh, a very nice coat but felt like a stuff sausage.
I get DD and now my hair dyed too, only had it done once and its semi permanent so it has worn well and took a couple of weeks but looks natural, going to have her go just a bit lighter on the color. If I were younger and had been brave I would have had a nose job. But then seeing all the bad cosmetic surgery maybe its best I never did.
I'm not to unhappy other then that and I need to drop at least 10 to 20 pounds to look better. But like my mom I take care of myself. Use Merle Norman and have over 50 years, but don't do nails, always doing to much for it to even last a day or two.

I'd love to find that makeover person too! The one who can look at my face and go "THIS is the style for you!" and cut my hair that way! And then show ME how to style it! Instead...I have a hair stylist who actually does cut my hair in a way I like...but I can't get her to STYLE it for me like I like! I go in with my hair styled similar to Debra in the early days of Everybody Loves Raymond (short and spiky around the ears) and ask her to help me enhance that style as it seems to suit me - and I walk out every single time with my hair blown back from my face and I feel like my mother!! I know you'll tell me to find another stylist - but it's hard to break up after 20 years! Plus...I really do feel like the CUT is pretty much there, as I can see it when I'm drying my hair - but since my hair is coarse and changes texture once dry, I need help getting it there!

I read what I posted in December, not much has changed except I'm 71 now.
I still need to lose 10 to 20 pounds, let my hair grow longer, to much work and got a bob, better but the texture is changing. I can make it look great but doesn't stay in but a day or two.
My skin is still in decent shape for my age, no wrinkles on my face, I attribute that to Merle Norman and premarin.
Clothes still fit me well and since I'm fairly tall I can camoflauge a lot of the 20 pounds though it would be better if it was gone. LOL!
The one thing I wish for is to wear pretty shoes and it will never happen with my messed up feet, so limits how nice I can look in clothing.

What is premarin? I look young for 36. I look 15 years younger than some of some of my high school friends. And any time I get carded people are shocked. My grandmother sold Mary Kay makeup when I was growing up so I used sunscreen every single day since I was 11 or 12. Only I didn't start doing my neck until a few years ago

Premarin is a hormone cream to replace the effects of a loss of estrogen in menopausal women. It can produce serious side effects. www.premarin.com/Do not use estrogens with or without progestins to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes or dementia (decline in brain function). Using estrogen-alone may increase your chances of getting strokes or blood clots. Using estrogens with progestins may increase your chances of getting heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, or blood clots. Using estrogens, with or without progestins, may increase your chance of getting dementia, based on a study of women 65 years of age or older.

My docs and I have discussed its use of course over the years. They had a study maybe 10 or 15 years ago about cancer and other issues and scared women to death about it and docs made them stop using it. Wouldn't you know there have now been new studies debunking that and said many women have suffered needlessly. I have had a hysterectomy and also no history of breast cancer in my families so continue taking it. Maybe I will get dementia or not, most people as they age lose mental abilities one way or another anyway. Apparently I don't have it yet. As my doc says you will still age just at a slower rate, yep I realize that. Not recommending to take or not for others, just so far it has been right for me. I never went through the change or had menopause symptoms. Tried the natural stuff made me really sick. Insurance will not pay for it in my case so $177 a month out of pocket, best money I've ever spent.
