Also, when cooking a turkey take the baggie with the neck and all that other stuff out. Leaving it in is just gross

COOKING TIP: pumpkin pie spice and taco seasoning are not interchangeable. LOL! My father learned a similar lesson once, while making cinnamon rolls. Mace and cinnamon aren't interchangeable, either.

My father learned that cooking a turkey at 500 degrees for one hour doesn't mean it's done, despite how brown it is. My mom was in the hospital one Thanksgiving and he thought he would surprise her by bringing the Thanksgiving feast to her.

I don't understand why everyone is getting excited about cooking turkey. I NEVER cook my turkey before I eat it. I just buy my Oscar meyer from the store, take it home, and put it on bread for my sandwhich.....

Turkeys are cruel. Not only are their hearts frozen, but so is everything else. And it takes more than four days to thaw them. I pulled out ice chunks from my turkey breast this morning, and it had been thawing since Saturday. Next year I will start on Halloween.

Thank you everyone for the laughs tonight, I needed it. I have my own horror stories to tell, but I'm too embarrassed. I'm glad to now that I am not the only one who made mistakes.

You can cook it frozen. www.epicurious.com/expert-advice/how-to-cook-a-frozen-turkey-articleI've done it, and it turned out great.

Cinnamon and paprika are not good substitutes for each other.
Neither is cinnamon and cayenne pepper.

Good to know! Hoping for no mishaps this year, all I'm doing are the pies (will bake them tonight). One year my son made the pie all from-scratch. He lifted it to put it in the oven, tipped it, and dumped half the filling on the floor. The dog was a very happy girl, by the time she was done "cleaning", the floor was spotless.

A half cup of salt does not taste as good as a half cup of sugar in a dessert.

Oh, and I'll plug Pepperdoo's pie crust again this year... It's fast, easy, doesn't require a rolling pin, and has turned out perfect every time. I even make little "mixes" in ziplock bags and save them for next time (I've also given the mixes to my dad so he doesn't use the refrigerated pre-made stuff, he's never learned to make a pie crust). It's in the recipe section under pies, here: www.notmsnmoney.proboards.com/post/1379439/threadPepperdoo's pie crust: Pat-in-pan Pie Crust Ingredients: 1 1/2 c plus 3 tbs all-purpose flour 1 1/2 ts sugar 1/2 t salt 1/2 c vegetable oil 3 tb cold milk Directions: Place the flour, sugar, and salt in the pie pan and mix with your fingers until blended. In a measuring cup, combine the oil and milk and beat with a fork until creamy. Pour all at once over the flour mixture. Mix with a fork until the flour mixture is completely moistened. Pat the dough with your fingers, first up the sides of the plate, then across the bottom. Flute the edges. Shell is now ready to be filled. If you are preparing a shell to fill later, or your recipe requires a prebaked crust, preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Dock the surface of the pastry with a fork and bake 15 minutes, checking often, and docking more if needed. VARIATION: For a 10-inch shell, use 2 cups all-purpose flour; 2 teaspoons sugar; 1 teaspoon salt; 2/3 cup vegetable oil; 3 tablespoons milk.

When I was fresh out of college and in my first home, my roommate and I decided to have Thanksgiving since we were grown ups now. My cat loved chicken. I knew that. I found out the smell of the turkey cooking was driving him up a wall.
Fast forward to me carving the turkey and the drippings in a pan off to the side. I glance over and the cat is sitting in the drippings I had planned to make gravy with. Needless to say, there was no gravy at my first Thanksgiving dinner.
In this case, we couldn't call and ask a guest to bring gravy because we had invited guys from the basketball team and their cooking skills made us look like professionals.

You should have used the 5 second rule.

Neither are baking soda and baking powder. I've managed to block out most of it but I do know when you mix them up, the first, and last, birthday cake you ever make for your dad is going to come out like a brick. I was lucky I didn't break a tooth. Yuck.

A half cup of salt does not taste as good as a half cup of sugar in a dessert. This reminds me of a time when my mother put salt in her coffee and sugar on her fries at McDonalds. Needless to say it was no a happy dinner.

My SIL married my brother when she was 17 and had experience making Thanksgiving. DB was in the Navy and her DB was a Marine and she decided to make them Turkey. The turkey was a butter ball, she had never had a butter ball before, the gravy was awful too much grease. The boys took a measuring cup and went door to door begging for gravy, she was embarrassed. Now she has been married to my little brother 48 years and their son is doing Thanksgiving for the first time. Would be good to get a story.

If you cook chicken by baking it in the oven, but if you turn off the oven on time, but forget to take the chicken out and then like 7 hours pass, you can NOT still eat it. You should throw it away. Even though the oven is sealed, it's not the same as Tupperware in the fridge.
I assume the same rule works for Turkeys too
