For my husband's family (eight siblings, seven of which are married and five of those have children) celebrates as a whole group the Saturday before Christmas. Then, we can stay with our immediate families on the actual day. Sometimes one or two siblings will spend the actual day together in addition to the family party. This plan has been in effect for at least a decade. It works well for us.
We stopped doing "stuff" for gifts as much as possible several years ago. DD#2 (now age 14) usually picks a show at the San Francisco Ballet she wants to see. It's coupled with her January birthday gift to include a hotel, dinner out, etc. We give gift certificates to restaurants to the boys (now adults) for places they cannot otherwise afford.

We stopped exchanging Christmas gifts with our adult children years ago. We don't need stuff nor do they need stuff. Instead we plan a vacation to a city where we all meet for several days.

I hate 99% of all things Seinfeld, but Festivus is priceless. to the OP, I haven't read the whole thread. apologies if any of this is a repeat. other than last year (my first year in the house, way away from immediate family), I have hosted my parents, sis and BIL for both T-day and xmas. I have long since stopped practicing the Catholicism in which I was raised, but would still host the fam as I was the central meeting spot. I didn't decorate, and it got to the point where sis and BIL were appalled that I had no tree, so they bought me a Charlie Brown tree. I would still put that out, actually, except dogs.... anyway, one of the things that I continued from childhood, was that I had mini-stockings that I would hang on the tree. think like 3 or 4" tall stockings? I glitter-glued everyone's name on a stocking, and we drew names at thanksgiving as to which stocking we would *fill* for Christmas, anonymously. **asterisks were b/c the gift didn't necessarily have to fit in the tiny stocking.

I do stockings for my lot. :- Orange, festive sweets (chocolate coins/snowmen) soap, flannel, nailbrush, comb, sponge, deodarant, toothbrush, hairbands, magazine, facepack, Christmas socks etc (left at bottom of bed) Then they get pjs and money. The child has similar toiletry stocking but with a comic and a couple of stocking toys....and a larger toy The stockings are their favourite thing. Other people may get chocolates or a bottle of wine but on the whole I'm so used to doing it now I just go out one Sunday and buy a job lot of stuff. I don't really go for that "something special" because it may not be to their taste.
