Preparing tax returns for Oct filing. How to verify if Form 4868 Request for extension was filed? Not sure if it was filed or not. Thanks!

You can call the IRS and they will tell you.

Thanks Taz, I thought that perhaps there was a quicker online source rather than a loooong wait for a phone call response.

Thanks Taz, I thought that perhaps there was a quicker online source rather than a loooong wait for a phone call response. If you have a CPA or EA that had a POA on file with the IRS for the tax year, they maybe able to log online with the IRS to see. As far as I know, the ability to look online is limited to tax preparers registered with the IRS. If you have identity theft issues with the IRS, then your tax preparer would still have to call the IRS as the preparer would be unable to retrieve it online. I do recommend calling them when they open in the morning (either 7am or 8am your local time) as the wait time can be less.

If you went through a preparer, they may have an acknowledgement in their records if it was electronically filed.
