I don't find his humor funny and he's too pushy. I do find him funny most of the time but he was definitely too pushy this past episode. She's at the camp to better herself and just seemed to barge in.

Maybe it was because I was distracted by chores, but this week's episode was kinda lame. And they need to tone down the overly sappy romantic love fest between Mom and Dad. To me, it just passsed convincing and is approaching ridiculous.
Maybe he will die from sirroris, given that they set up the whole drinking thing. Especially since she obviously got re-married, to his best friend!
I didn't pick up on the drinking thing.... The drinking thing was earlier episodes. One was when he and Miguel were at the bar, and had 3 drinks before 5pm. The other was after he came home late one night due to his drinking.

In the earlier episodes, the kids are about 9, and he is drinking too much, but now the kids are about 9 and 'greatest husband', 'he is a saint'. Maybe the off remark that he works late was code for 'he is out drinking'?

I've never liked Toby, but I'd still be annoyed if Kate actually does anything with sleazy camp guy. I loved this week when Rebecca told off the guy in her band. I both like and don't like Toby. For me personally, he is WAY too pushy. The episode where he wouldn't leave her alone about wanting to watch the game by herself...well, that would have annoyed the crap of me. I do feel like he truly cares about her though.

Kate looked older, there was mention of the boys playing football and Kevin sneaking a girl out of this room. Totally different time period than when Jack was drinking. You were doing chores so weren't paying as much attention

Yes, but they were 9 at the pool, and the birthday party and not even a hint that he was anything but a perfect husband and father.

I never thought about it, but it would be a good angle to show him as a great dad/father, but then later revisit the alcohol thing and reveal that he's been an alcoholic the whole time.
I never thought about the fact that Rebecca pretty much said he was a subpar dad at that point.

By the way, I've learned 2 things about this show: Toby wears a fat suit. He's not skinny, but he's definitely skinnier. Also learned that it's written into Kate's contract that she has to lose weight throughout the show, as that's going to be a story line.

I know plenty where one day it is peaches and cream and another day it isn't...I have seen it many times especially where alcohol is involved. IDK - to me it actually makes them more real. They have problems but try to work through them. Plus, Jack has ALWAYS been a good father (at least from what I have seen). ETA: I also never got the impression that Jack was an alcoholic, only that for a short period of time he was drinking more than he should. That is completely different than being a full on alcoholic. Seemed like he was just working through some mid-life crisis issues or something.

I'm interested in finding out how & when the family ended up in the NYC metro area. I've known from early on that adult Randall & his family are living in New Jersey and he commutes to Manhattan (In an early episode when Randall called Kevin, I looked up the area code from his phone # & it was NJ, near NYC) . When did Miguel & Rebecca relocate to the NY Metro area from Pittsburgh? It probably happened before the big 3 were adults and on their own, also, Sophie lives in NYC even though she was also from Pittsburgh-indicative that they lived in NY when she & Kevin were married, Randall ended up in NJ & Miguel & Rebecca live in NYC metro, although I'm not sure if they're in NY or NJ.
Also, when Jack takes a drink, it looks like he's gone off the wagon, indicative that he may have a drinking problem.

Yeah, it does seem that everyone is in NY all of a sudden.... Also, it seems that Randal is going off the deep end but then next episode he is fine

Do you think that is going to be the night Jack dies? Maybe Kate heard their whole fight and that is why she doesn't want to talk about his death?

I was thinking about....the age of the kids match.....
Or may be Kate had something, somehow to do with his death?
And why am I the only one who doesn't like that Rebecca married Miguel?
Actually, I am not liking Rebecca that much at all....

Meh, too expensive to hire an actor to play the best friend and another one to play the new husband.
You think she should never remarry and live as an old widow from the age of 40 until she dies?

Yes, but they were 9 at the pool, and the birthday party and not even a hint that he was anything but a perfect husband and father. and the episode where he was out drinking was when the kids were toddlers. they had already done the Thanksgiving trip that ended at the campy motel with hot dogs on white bread - which was the first inkling I had that Jack was going to be an amazing father. I think that was also the 9yo's listed in imdb.

Actually, I am not liking Rebecca that much at all.... well, there were a couple of instances where Jack was Kate's shining knight (the pool, the birthday party) so there's probably a lot more going on there than you'd realize on the surface. as far as the age of the kids, the bit of the funeral that was shown, it was definitely teenage kids so we are probably seeing those actors now at the right age. and I'm not a huge fan of Rebecca either, especially not after the past few episodes.

The episode where the boys were fighting and Randall said that Kevin was mean to him at school, and then Rebecca and Jack sat on the floor and she said "I'm a 9 as a parent, and you are a 2" or something like that? Am I combining multiple episodes in my head?

www.imdb.com/title/tt5924012/?ref_=ttep_ep2They were 8 when we first found out he was drinking. How long it had been going on - who knows. How long it continues, I don't think we know for sure. They show him there, but that doesn't mean it is not an on-and-off problem throughout the rest of his life.

someone else said (maybe here, maybe fb, not really sure) that the times where we do actually see him drink, it's framed as if he's going to tie one on. so I wonder if the underlying addiction never went away, and that he just managed to hide it well.

Did anyone watch it last night?
I ugly cried the last five minutes of the show. This show gets me almost every week. The episode with Kate at the camp where she screams thinking about her father's death, I just lost it. I lost my father in my early 20's and the emotion is just so real. I'm sad we are running out of episodes this season already!

Yep, I cried quite a bit during the most recent episode. Most episodes I might shed a tear or two but this one really got me.

March 14th?? no!! that is WAY too fucking soon. I just finished watching this week's episode, and it's good that I watched tonight rather than tomorrow morning, bc I don't think I'd be acceptable to go out in public after watching that. I'm a hot fucking mess right now. I was already bawling, and then Randall did the "breathe...." thing that Jack always did for him. done.....I'm shocked I didn't wake my roommate up.
and can I just say, I hate seeing y'all that post live on Tuesday nights while I'm still at work. I'm so afraid to open this thread and find a spoiler.

I am still behind an episode. I personally like Rebecca. Yes she isn't perfect but I think she was overall a good wife to Jack and mother to the kids. I am waiting to pass judgment on her being with Miguel until I see how it evolved. I mean she didn't leave Jack for Miguel. Jack died. Should she be alone for the rest of her life? JMHO

I love this show & I cried this episode, like most episodes. I don't mind Rebecca being with Miguel at all. I like the episode before last where Miguel was talking Kevin off the ledge when nobody else had the time for him.

None of the characters are perfect, which is one reason why I like the show. They all seem pretty real to me. A lot of shows are so over the top now with drama but this one is more like real life.
I like Rebecca for the most part. It doesn't bother me that she is with Miquel. Like Icelandic Woman said, it's not like she left Jack for Miquel. Jack died...why is it fine for her to be with a stranger but not fine to be with Jack's friend?
On a side note, I used to have a friend that joked around and said she told her husband that if she ever kicked the bucket that he should date me. Yes, that did make me feel a little weird but from her perspective she said she would rather him be with someone she knows is a good person than some random stranger.

I have said that my DH might end up with one of our friends. He swears that she would drive him crazy, but, I am not ruling it out. Hopefully it will continue to be a therotical discussion for another 35 years or so.
