I'm thinking I'd like to start straightening my hair again. It's probably been about 10 years since I last did it with a round brush and hair dryer and that takes too long (an hour at least). I hear straightening irons are great but I've never used one. Are they faster? I know the look would be more flat which is fine. Apparently I look like 3 different people, straight hair me, curly hair me and up-do me. Perhaps flat iron me will be a 4th but I'll have to let the people decide.
The motivation comes from the fact that my old Boston roommate just eloped and is having a reception soon. I feel like this is the excuse I need to put a little effort in.

They are pricy. Unless a person would use it quite often - probably not worth the price. I'm just really terrible at doing hair so maybe it was me, but the cheaper ones seems to "snag" and then I'd have these wavy tracks. Maybe it wasn't the Chi but rather the fact I just got better at it.

I do agree that cheaper ones tend to snag or get hot spots, but the one I linked to has been great to me.

I have a CHI. Love it. They are expensive but I've found deals. ULTA had one the other day marked down to $70 and half off all clearance so I paid $35. Now I have one to leave at DF's house.

do you have a Sally Beauty near you? I bought one of these earlier this summer - linkit was about $35 on sale, and it's outstanding.

I was in Ulta Tuesday night and I saw the CHI on uber sale too. I should have gotten it - my iron is on its last legs. I might peruse on Amazon today since I have to get some school supplies.
Also remember to use a good heat protectant before ironing. I highly recommend CHI Silk Infusion.

I looked at the brand my hair stylist used last time I was there and it was that one. Which is why I bought it, if she can use and abuse it, DD ought to get plenty of use out of it.

My hair is very curly naturally (not orphan annie curly but definitely more than wavy). The Chi is the only one I found that can really straighten my hair and evne that takes some work...oh yeah, my hair isn't only curly but I have a shit ton of it, too...I haven't used the particular iron that you posted but I have tried others and they just never worked for me.

^good point. Yogi, I think I remember your hair being kind of similar to mine - thick and coarse - but less curly than mine. I could be wrong about that, though. fwiw, my stylist says my hair acts like Debra Messing's as far as curly and straightened. if that helps you at all, comparing your hair to mine for considering my recommendations.

Very true. Mine is fine, wavy, and dense as hell. It is surprisingly hard to find anything that works for me because my hair just does what it wants. I can't even use a curling iron, which is funny since my hair is wavy. The Chi is very nice, but I just don't flatten enough to buy one, so I was glad to find a more affordable one that was a great price. No more snags! I have found that Aveda Smooth Infusion Style Prep Smoother is what helps my hair dry naturally without going all crazy. Go figure that I use straightening stuff for my waves to look nice.

Yes, thick and frizz prone, probably medium curl. This is the closest celebrity hair I've seen to it.

I have a cheapo Remington hat I bought about 2 years ago. It works very well. My sister suggested it after her CHI went belly up after 6 months. She said it worked better than her CHI for a fraction of the cost.

I will have to try the Aveda product you mentioned. Since I've decided to go blonde, I can no longer straighten my hair each day or I will have a fried mess on my hands

You need to be strong to straighten iron. Iron is a pretty hard metal. You need like Superman strength to un-bend or straighten iron.....just my 2 cents
