I will be up for a job interview next week, and have never been to the area. I want to drive around and check out some neighborhoods while I am there. Does anyone have info on affordable housing or general COL (and anything else I should know) waaay up there?

It's not that far up there. Housing is reasonable, great place to raise a family. Buy a snowblower. LCOL. Skaneatles is stupid expensive, but gorgeous. Camillus has a fantastic school district (West Genesee). Liverpool and Fayetteville are nice. Manlius is on the expensive side. The City itself has some amazing houses for next to nothing, but you'll be living in the 'hood.

Don't just buy a snowblower. Buy a BIG snowblower. Snow shovel. Big, heavy coat, gloves, hat, boots and scarf. Learn to think of snow as an opportunity for free exercise and muscle building fun. I used to live in PA, but relatively near there. I had a snowblower with electric start, but I am only a poor, weak--not to mention old-- female and didn't like to struggle with the pullstart.

I worked in the Syracuse area, Liverpool to be exact. I lived there also. If you PM me, I'll fill you in.

I live in a rural area near Syracuse. Just keep in mind that while housing is affordable, the property taxes are out of control in this state. Lot of fun things to do in CNY.. skiing, hiking, boating, SU games, camping, some concerts, lots of festivals downtown in good weather. Lots of good communities to raise kids.

Thanks to all for the responses. What's a s-n-o-w-b-l-o-w-e-r? I have only seen them on news clips. High of 82 here tomorrow. I will try to get to Dinosaur BBQ if I can. I am from where we take BBQ very seriously, so we'll see. The schools are not so much a concern because we are prepared to home-school if necessary. Why are they closing? Finances? Test scores? Both?

I live about an hour and a half south of Syracuse and I wouldn't even consider living there with all of the snow they get! LOL...seriously, if you have never lived in a snowy climate before, you are in for a huge shock. Syracuse is one of the snowiest cities in NY. When it snows, it's measured by the foot there most of the time, not inches. Upstate NY is a beautiful area, but the winters can be brutal. I'm not sure if I lived in a warm climate that I'd even consider THAT big of a climate change...it'd have to be a significant amount of money, that's for sure...

I think the city of Syracuse is closing some schools due to budgets and consolidation. There are some schools that are badly in need of renovations but not allot of money for it. Some burbs such as Liverpool are closing and consolidating. New York State is famous for mis-allocation of school funding and favoring funding downstate schools instead of the needier upstate schools. As far as snow goes, it beats the heat in my opinion and this area has the equipment to move the snow and keep things going when snow comes.
