Was Ellis Island "legal immigration" or just kind of controlled access? The immigrants just kind of showed up. The didnt' have to apply for a visa first and go through a lengthy approval process. How did they actually verify the people were who they said they were? Well at the moment I am not sure - but there was some screening etc. - people didn't just sneak across the border and disappear into the country - and I do believe that a few people were sent back

Yet, some of the general population was still as terrified of them as some people are today of mexicans. People were scared because they were a different religion & upset that they didn't assimilate, but kept to themselves. They formed political parties to try to keep them out & keep them from destroying america. I see more similarities than differences in the way we are treating mexicans today. I don't think having better communication with folks back home really changes things.

Do a lot of non-hispanic people go to these celebrations? Is NY just ahead of the rest of us?

Once again, I ask, where do you live? Because in California where I live, CDM is definitely not limited to those with "Mexican roots". It's a festival holiday celebreated in many restaurants, bars, community centers and street fairs which I am fairly certain are not all owned by Mexicans...

Cinco de Mayo is a beautiful holiday in California I've always been partial to Mexican folk dancing. The dresses are stunning!!!

Yes, they have a variety of celebrations & big events in city park as well as parades. From what I have noticed, attendence seems to be limited to hispanics. I have not noticed cinco de mayo being treated like halloween or st patricks day in that everyone acknowlegdes the holiday. Although, maybe I am mistaken, I will have to pay better attention this year.

Perhaps you should attend it then, and lend some of that sweet, sweet "diversity" to the celebration...

I work in a community with a large percentage of Mexican immigrants. They have a great Cinco De Mayo celebration and the whole community celebrates. They also have the best Thanksgivings ever! Turkey, stuffing, all the traditional stuff+ tamales, enchiladas all the traditional Mexican foods. I was also surprised when I started working there at the nasty names the legal immigrants used toward the illegals. It was not due to ethnicity but legality and it was surprising. I think it is somewhat similar to me saying " my mom is really a bitch" and someone else saying "your mom is really a bitch". I can say it, but it hurts more when an outsider says it.
