100-150 years ago the irish were a hated group of immigrants in this country. Now virtually everyone celebrates a holiday that was originally an irish holiday & it is seen as celebrating irish heritage. You see a lot of signs with phrases like "everyone is Irish on March 17th".
Just makes me wonder what holidays & heritages we may all be celebrating in 100-150 years.

I just love a good margarita on the deck in the spring. I'd be happy to have a national holiday that espouses drinking margaritas and eating mexican food.

I don't need a holiday to eat Mexican food and drink a good margarita. But although Irish and Indian I still prefer German beer.

June 2: Birth of the Italian Republic "Festa della Repubblica"
There aren't any holidays in June, so that sounds good to me.

St. Patrick was not Irish, he was born in Britain, and then kidnapped and sent into slavery in Ireland. Not everyone celebrates the holiday promoting a man who drove the 'snakes' out of Ireland. Snakes being a euphemism for pagans, or other people that the church deemed evil at the time.
Yesterday I had the pleasure of riding the train home from Manhattan with a bunch of drunk teenagers ganged out in green.
Columbus Day is the Italian American day of celebration here in New York. 150 years from now - yeah, we'll be honoring Hidalgo on his birthday.

The Russians celebrate Tatyana's Day, on Jan 25. Eh, Russian food sucks, other than pierogies, and I think they're actually Polish.

She served some caviar last night, on some bread, that was very good. Never had it before. You know what sucks? YOu... Just kidding...

With the ideology of some posters here you will probably be fasting for a month and making some pilgrimage to a Mecca in Kalifornia.

I was thinking cinco de mayo, like swamp answered & figured someday maybe we all will be celebrating it. Lots of other good answers too.
It is funny. I posted this thinking I would get some responses about how the irish immigration back in the day is different from today's mexican immigration. You know, from all those posters who keep posting about how they aren't against immigration per se, but against immigrants who don't immediately assimilate to american culture - the immigrants who dare to bring their languages & their traditions to our country.
I just thought yesterday was a good example of how america really is a melting pot & how our cultures mix & blend over time, while at the end we are all eventually americans.
But, I guess no one wanted to take up the cause & try to explain why this set of immigrants is different from the immigrant groups that came before. Why the immigrant groups that came before did eventually assimilate & didn't destroy the country, while the mexicans really are going to destroy this country & our culture.

AFter all sorts of posturing, I think the answer is that the micks were different because they spoke English and are white. I'm not saying I agree with it, but that seems to be what I get from it. Disclaimer: I can call them Micks because I am one.

There is a huge difference between immigration in the 19th Century and immigration in the last 15 or so years. 100 to 150 years ago, when people left the homeland, they never returned and/or never heard from family left behind. Today, there is much more mobility and it is very easy to contact left behind family. In fact, my Russian GF, talks to her three daughters via Skype every day. Immigrants, especially those in poverty, come to the US and get on our social welfare rolls.

Jeez, where do you live that there are no Cinco de Mayo celebrations now? I guess you kind of missed my point, because there is a different between the two holiday celebrations. There are a lot of cinco de mayo celebrations, but the ones around here tend to be limited to those with mexican roots. Whereas, st patricks day seems to be celebrated by everyone with any ancestry.

The legal immigrants don't come here to get on social services. I'm pretty sure they have to have a sponsoring employer and marketable skill before they can come over.
The docs recruited by our local hospital have to jump through extensive hoops to get their work visas.

It's not a taste problem, it's texture.

I reside in the NYC metro area, and around May 5, nearly every restaurant has a Cinco De Mayo celebratin.

Was Ellis Island "legal immigration" or just kind of controlled access?
The immigrants just kind of showed up. The didnt' have to apply for a visa first and go through a lengthy approval process. How did they actually verify the people were who they said they were?
