Due to low enrollment. LOL! news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theticket/20110318/ts_yblog_theticket/barack-h-obama-elementary-to-close/The Barack H. Obama Elementary School in Asbury Park, N.J. will be shuttered this summer, largely due to low enrollment, the Asbury Park Press reports. Bruce N. Rodman, the official who oversees the district's finances, determined that it was necessary for one of the district's elementary schools to close and the Obama school's enrollment had dropped 35 percent in the past 10 years, the newspaper reports. The Bangs Avenue School elected in 2010 to change its name to Barack H. Obama Elementary. At the time that the school acquired its new name, administrators took a lot of flak for ostensibly focusing on the name change instead of the plight of its students. But the city resident behind the movement, Myra Campbell, believed it would "send a subliminal message" to the students. "Every time they walk through the school doors, there's going to be a certain amount of pride in where they go to school," Campbell told the Star-Ledger in 2009. "We now move forward in trying what we can to improve the academic skills of the students and also the social skills." At the time, another New Jersey school had already been renamed after the president. About 1,000 students will be reassigned to local schools in the fall.

While it's a quaint attempt to associate the enrollment drop to the president, the fact that enrollment has been dropping for 8 years prior to Obama obtaining the office, the joke really isn't all that funny. After all, most parents don't send their kids to a particular school just because they like who the school was named for.

Why would you think it's funny if you weren't associating it with Obama's presidency?
Would you have thought it equally funny if John H. Smith Elementary School was closing due to a lack of enrollment?

I live near a town where they will be closing Lincoln Elementary School because of declining enrollment and the school needs expensive upgrades. Are they being disrespectful to our former president?

I don't think it's funny when any local school has to close. That's unfortunate for the students :/

In order to find humor in something written, you have to associate something. Your posts can't become any more unbelievable, so no loss. Why Aren't Conservatives Funny? gawker.com/#!5460506/why-arent-conservatives-funny (If you google <why aren't conservatives funny> you get at least two pages worth of sites) Leave the humor to the experts, Ed. ;D

Actually, government run education is doing just fine for the non-poverty students, unfortunately we've got a high rate of childhood poverty.
And yes, Vonnie, I do. But I also support smaller, more numerous schools, so that parents and children can feel more of a connected and supportive community. But it's a tough balance to achieve when you look at poverty and racial lines that divide most American communities. Many states fund schools directly out of property taxes, so you have a fairly large disparity county by county and even, often, community by community (as the schools with students facing more challenges usually need more resources and don't always get them). Anyway, not an expert, but I do think local schools are important.

What was the subliminal message Ms Campbell was trying to send? Naming a school after a community organizer would suddenly get students more active, make it easier for teachers to indoctrinate our public school students into the Democratic Party propaganda movement, taxpayers would want to pay more taxes to keep a half empty school open? What was Ms. Campbell's message?

What was Ms. Campbell's message? Just guessing here, but I'd wager the school has a large African American Population and she was hoping to instill some pride and hope in the kids. And I've still not seen a single shred of proof that a public school education indoctrinates children, so would you care to elaborate?

You and I are very much in agreement when it comes to local schools and their importance - unfortunately I am watching my governor try to reduce 800 school districts down to 300 districts - totally stripping any control of schools from the parents.

Well, that's actually not really taking any control from parents (depending on where you are). I live in a county of under 60k people and we have something like 12 school districts, half of which have only one school. For no fucking reason. Now, many of those districts are due to the fact that those single school districts are rural, but I'm pretty positive that there is literally no reason to pay that many administrators. Each school in a district has a site council that parents can get involved with anyway. So no loss if you consolidate (at least in California, where funds are distributed more.. equitably).

This is in Asbuy Park NJ so it is not much of a shock that they are declining in enrollment. It is happening up and down the shore. There are a few districts that want to close because of such low enrollment but they are not legally allowed unless the district that takes the students also takes the teachers. We also have like 644 school districts in the state. We need 63 tops.

This is part of the mess that just one district is going through. There are a few parents that just want their "home rule" But mostly it is about the law that requires them to get the recieving district to take all the tenured teachers and they all are.
"None of the board members appeared surprised by the dire prediction. Numerous times over the past five years, a majority of school board members have said they thought the future of the district would be to close the school entirely and send all students to Ocean City to be educated.
That scenario was likely to have already occurred but for two sticking points: the reluctance of parents of the district’s youngest students to send them off-island to school, and the law that would require Ocean City school district to take all of Sea Isle City’s tenured teachers if the send-receive relationship is expanded.
In sending the fourth graders in September 2010, Sea Isle City kept more teachers on its staff than it has grade levels. State statute prohibits terminating tenured teachers based on a send-receive expansion.
Ocean City Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Taylor and the Ocean City school board have said all along that while they would welcome any and all of Sea Isle’s students, their school district and its budget could not afford financially to take on the tenured teachers, most of which are near or at the top of the pay scale."

I think that it's funny too! (closing a school names after a sitting President).
Now if you want to know what's not funny...... That's paying for a school with taxpayer's money & leaving it open to graduate students that can't read (or add or survive in society). That I don't find funny.

Oh & I doubt that leaving any school open that has only a 35% capacity is smart. It's just not cost effective.

Very interesting film specifically about NJ school system but applicable to many. It is not a" blame the union" film but they are potrayed as a piece of the entire huge pie of problems and corruption. www.thecartelmovie.com/
