coffee is getting so expensive? I used to buy the colombian one but that is out of my league now. I just drink original now or maybe something else depending what is on sale. I make my own coffee out home but might grap a cup on the go while at work and in both cases (grocery and coffee shop) the price of coffee is just WOW! Might switch to tea

I do believe all of the coffee sold here orignates and is grown overseas, and mainly in South America. Not 100% on that one. The falling dollar, debasing of the currency, bad weather, etc. are factors.

Prices for raw green coffee are at their highest level in 14 years, according to the San Francisco Business Times. The problem exists from harvest to coffee cup, from importers to roasters to retailers.
According to CNBC, Coffee futures have jumped more than 40 percent in the last year and there are expectations of a smaller than normal crop next year.
According to CNN Money, bad weather in South America is threatening crops. Brazil and top exporter Vietnam are talking about hoarding their stocks. And U.S. stockpiles are reportedly at 10-year lows. That means higher prices for U.S. coffee companies, which, in turn, may mean higher prices for consumers.

Find a cheaper/healthier alternative, perhaps tea as you mentioned. I gave up caffeine (in the form of sodas) about 10 years ago, and never miss it.

Depending on what you buy, tea is NOT cheaper. Boxes of Twinings certainly are cheaper than coffee. But good quality loose leaf tea can hit very high prices per ounce. The darjeeling I like is almost $10/oz.
Molly, was there an official report about coffee futures? I might have to start hoarding myself!

Yes coffee prices are way up, but how often do you buy coffee? Maybe its just that I take advantage of the free coffee at work, so I only make at home on the weekend, but I buy a brick of coffee maybe every other month, so a couple dollars is not a big deal.
For big time coffee drinkers, how much do you buy?
I'm sure Starbucks will use this as an excuse to jack up their prices even more.

Coffee is definitely up but then so is tea, which really can go quite high. I figure it is cheaper then anything else I drink so even if I pay $10/lb that makes a LOT of cups of coffee before I have to do it again and that is only equivalent to 2-3 cups at starbucks so I buy the coffee I want and I enjoy it. I make my coffee every morning, I buy the beans and grind the premium coffee at the store, I think one of those bags is about 2 lbs and I buy it about every 2-3 months so really not going to complain if the columbian farmer is making a little more.

I am a big coffee drinker, read 4-5 cups on a regular day easy.
So when it is on sale I tend to stock up. I get hit when I have long days at work and need to buy some coffee, so might spend like $5 for 2 extra large cup of coffee during the day.

The recent report I saw blamed global warming, really. The yeilds are way down in the primary growing areas do to changes in the weather resulting in a reduction in supply = higher prices. They are afraid that it won't be possible to move the crops to different growing regions and follow the weather trends. The prediction is the decline in output and increased prices will continue. Maybe it's time to invest in synthetic coffee stock.
I believe the world wide demand is also increasing further draining the available supply. Next to cosmetics, the emerging countries all want their caffine jolt just like us Americans.

Molly, was there an official report about coffee futures? I might have to start hoarding myself! I didn't pay that much attention ... but you could search for the article on the CNBC website (it might say).

I noticed the jump in coffee prices over last fall. Shocking. I had a $2.50 coupon from CVS for the 11.5 oz size and bought 2. The shelf price was $4.50 for that little thing. I no longer that 1/4 cup of liquid coffee gold. It's reheated. PTDCP - post traumatic dumped coffee pot.
I run 2 pots of 12 cups a day. DH drinks 2 cups, I drink the rest. To save on electricity I put the coffee in a thermos. If some is left over, I reheat in the microwave.
Cawiau: Get some of those coffee singles for work. They can also be ran through a drip coffee maker. Same with the large tea bags.

I remember reading that the price of coffee was going to do a major jump, but I don't remember why - since everything else is doing a large jump it just didn't sink in - other than the fact that my coffee was going to cost me more. I almost never buy coffee when I'm out - maybe one a month if I'm tired and out and about. I love the local coffee shop that is in our town about 20 miles away, but I'm just not willing to pay that much for a cup except on a very rare occassion. Luckily it's downtown, and I don't go there very often so the temptation is lower. I drink about 6-8 cups a day (measurement on the coffee pot - in my coffee cups it's about 3). And yes, I've started reheating it instead of throwing it down the drain

I got a 40 pack of TB at Costco this week then 7 12 packs of double rolls. Costco was about $21 and the other was 4.99 a package. I donated it all to the food bank yesterday. My project of the year is to shop for the food bank but I am mostly going to do paper. I am signing up on Amazon for diaper delivery service you save 30% if you join a club and get auto shipping every month or two or three or six so I can get the price each down below 20 cents. I might buy a little food but they seem to get plenty of food and baby formula but not much paper. I might get some feminine products too. With the recession and inflation on basics it seems like a good idea to help the low paid workers with some needs. I am a good shopper so can get things like 200 packs of diapers where they can't afford that much all at one time. All the stores here are closed now the food bank is in a closed store and the other is empty so people who walk to the food bank would need to take a bus to a store and the closest one is expensive, I never go to it.

Too bad you can't stock up on eggs. They are always really cheap right after Easter.

My wife does all the shopping, so I haven't noticed the price of coffee. Seems like last fall the local grocery stores were having a sale on coffee, and we stocked up. I have a bizillion bags of 8 o'clock coffee in the basement. When I need one, I go get it.
Cawiau, YOU spend $5 a day on take out coffee? I thought you were supposed to be cheap! LOL!!!
Can you keep a little coffee maker at your desk (or wherever you work?) It's a lot cheaper.
There's a guy who has written a whole series of books about how you can become rich by controlling your everyday expenses. Er... David Bach. THat's the name! His books are called "Automatic Millionaire" or something like that.
Anyway, he coined this term called the "Latte Factor". Meaning that spending the $4 per day on a Starbucks latte vs brewing a home cup for pennies, costs you tens of thousands of dollars in retirement savings.
Most of his book(s) are pablum for the masses, but I like that term, Latte Factor.
My sister, has it in spades. She and her late husband used to enjoy cruising around in the car, and they would stop by McDonalds to buy a Coke. I mean, they would get in the car, and drive to McDonalds to get a Coke at the drive-thru, then cruise the neighborhood.
I don't know why they couldn't just take a Coke with them from home! A canned Coke is what, 35 to 50 cents? Why spend $1.75 at McDonalds? Geesh! (And she complains she never has any money...)

I don't spend $5/day everyday because I always make coffee at home. But some days like yesterday where I was at work for close to 15 hours, I needed a pick me up. So 2 extra large cups from DunkinDonuts (one around 1 and the other at about 6) costs me like $4 and change. And it came oiut of my $20/week allowance.
But usually I make coffe at home, drink some and really bring a thermos to work with me and I reheat if needed.
Last year around this time I was buying a tub for $6.99 but now that is the sale price for the week, regular price is $8.99 and for some other brands it's over $10

I used to keep my coffee beans in the freezer but one of the Starbucks kids said no! Never do that! So now I buy a huge bag of french roast at Costco, grind it there and bring it home and transfer it to a airtight cannister. I drink 6-8 cups at home and another big mug at work, daily. At work we get the cheaper Folgers or whatever is onsale. And lock it up because loosers will steal anything

I went back to a trick of a few years ago.
Somewhere n the 70's r 80's the price of coffee was outrageous. At that time "Mr Coffee" advertised that with his coffee maker you could add half as may fresh grounds to the old grounds and get the same pot of coffee.
So day one use 4 scoops, day two add two additional scoops for the same 10 cup pot. I cant tell the difference!

Tea isn't cheap either, even the cheap brands. I told DH there is no way I'd be paying almost $4 for a box of generic Earl Gray! Fortuantely our supermarket has a health section and for some reason tea is cheaper there than in the tea aisle AND it is where the good brands hide.

So now I buy a huge bag of french roast at Costco, grind it there and bring it home and transfer it to a airtight cannister. It is better to get whole beans and grind them as you use them--they stay fresher longer. My fiance has a grind and brew coffee pot that grinds the beans right before the coffee is made. It's great because you don't have to have a separate grinder and transfer the ground beans to the coffee pot.
