everyone is just a possible target for a gunman or terrorist? Chicago area airport.....Midway. "Great in the city" airport, but the physical squeezing of the airport on a small piece of real estate makes it an easy target. Unfortunately, you too, can just drive up and drop off a gunman at the frontdoor of the check in gates where the lines can be long. Just a quick jog across a couple of bus lanes, through the door, and 75 yards, tops, to the check in gate, at best, less, if you want to jump the ropes.
If that is too easily defeated by a policeman, you can simply park in the garage on the backside of the check in building, walk in the lower level with guns under your coat, bomb vest, if you prefer, or the bomb in either carry on or checked luggage go up the escalator and accomplish the damage right at check in.
Have not been to O'hare for a few years, but at least the parking lots are not next to the terminal, so a gunman has a very long walk, or commuter bus ride to go in the front doors. I do always remember a higher profile of policemen at this airport. Of course when going through security after check in, you can always have a couple hundred people lined up for the vest bomb while they check your driver license and boarding ticket.
What are the limitations security wise, of airports in your area?
And outside of leveling a few blocks of land before the entrance to the airport and build a new secure security facility with no checkpoints that filter people into a small area to help prevent an attack, I have no solution........

I understand if you are not from Chicago, you cannot precisely comprehend the layout of the airport.
I am sure I would have trouble understanding your description of your local airport. Just want a discussion of what our public is facing at our facilities. I would assume we would all agree many of them leave a lot to e desired, security wise.

No bombings, shootings, or hijackings at MEM International in or around the passenger terminals. Only attempting hijacking was tried by a flight engineer who was about to get canned by FedEx. Federal Express Flight 705

BWI has passenger drop off by the check in lines. Parking is farther out. The daily garage is connected but I've never used it. Never flown out of National or Dulles.

Any airport is a public area where people will come and go. Per definition a large percentage of those people will travel and bring luggage with them. It is possible to hide weapons in luggage. So I do not believe that we can secure airports against terrorists who attack before the security checkpoints. What has happened in Brussels and now in Istanbul can happen anywhere in the world including in any US airport.
I have decided that I will not live my life obsessing about this or cowering in fear. I will travel to wherever I want to go (active war zones are not on my list of "want to go"). Once I become too scared and give up travelling, the b*stards will have won. JMO

I just want a discussion describing our old airport infrastructure(s) which have been added on, expanded numerous times, before the age of terrorism here in the states. We have to decide whether we are okay being trapped in check in lines being set up for a disaster, or if we are welling to rebuild a better mousetrap, protecting everyone. As I stated, Midway airport could be a prime target that is set up for an extreme example of terrorism accomplishing their goal with a maximum body count. I prefer to think about preventing the attack of maximum efficiency. Unless, we as citizens point out the inefficiencies, I do not think we can expect our government to from doing the right thing, just based on cost of doing the changes. The body count, to them, is an acceptable number until it no longer is.
