We flew them to Costa Rica and they "hit up" people on the plane to donate money to unicef. I've never experienced something like this. Has anyone else?

No, that seems really odd. The last couple years it seems like every carrier has been pushing their credit card really hard at the end of flights.

Nope, and I have gold status with them, so fly a fair amount on their planes each year. Ditto what aj said about them pushing their CCs on most flights, but I've never heard a charity donation appeal.

It was a lot better than I expected. We went to two resorts, both very different. The first was called El Silencio and was very quiet, green, and lush. Costa Rica is working on becoming totally self sustaining and is trying to be there by 2020. Where we are now is Tobocan and is very nice and we have a view from our back of the volcano which killed around 80 people in 1968 and destroyed two villages. But it's a typical resort which is nice but full of people. Today is our last day and we are hiking waterfalls. I've gotten a huge amount of exercise this week.

American's plane to Miami from Tampa was nice. The plane to Costa Rica was ghetto. Including the push for money and credit cards. I'm getting emails daily from them. I get the constant hand out requests from service employees and budgeted for it for this trip but sheesh, the airline? Btw, just like the Bahamas no one in Costa Rica wants their own money, they want American dollars. Glad I didn't bother with Colognes.

I found that to be true as well in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. They were very happy to take US dollars.

that used to be US Airways' thing. I bet AA has picked it up since the airlines merged.

Never on an airplane, but I've been in movie theaters where they allow charities to come in and make their pitch and then walk the aisles with collection bins, hitting up people for money before the movie starts. In my area, Shriners are big on doing this.

The request was usually to donate airline miles to a charity. They didn't want a few but at least 10,000 when I last checked over 10 yrs. ago.
The grocery check out in some place have donate to special olympics on the electronic card readers.

It happened on a flight I was on but it was for the Retiring Stewardesses Fund. I did toss in a Benjamin when I realized the stewardess had her key in the switch for activating my oxygen mask as she was asking for money.

I remember that trick or treat for UNICEF. That was going on when I was a kid and I remember my parents grumbling about having to go find money in the middle of kids trick or treating. It happened to me only once and I told the kid I only had candy on me. She was happy to take that. I thought that had stopped at some point. To me, that's no different than the resort we are staying at telling you they give three dollars of every night you stay here toward local things like the school and all then finding out they ask YOU for that extra three dollar a night "donation" as you're checking out! You think how great they are doing that since this place is not cheap and I booked two rooms but then you find out its you they're asking for that extra three bucks times four days times two rooms.
