We get the major Holidays off. My big problem is the day after Thanksgiving, which they refuse to close the clinic for and is in most demand as a day off. We decide based on a combination of who officially asks for it first and who had if off last year. My biggest problem is the employee who regularly has Friday off, so doesn't think he should be in the rotation to work that day.

When I was a federal employee, the Friday after Thanksgiving is not a federal holiday. I really liked to work that day as the office would be empty and I could get so much work done. Same for the week between Christmas and New Year's.

I am salaried, if we are open and its a work day (I get every third fri off) then I have to be there. We close, 4th, memorial day, thanksgiving DAY only, labor day (and the sat before bec of the town parade), 1/2 day on the Eves and full day christmas and new years. That is it, but if any of those fall on a sunday we don't close any extra days. I don't get to complain but some of the staff do if they have to work more Sat or Fridays around the holiday-they don't get any extra pay for that. Since I started I have been working every easter weekend except this one coming up and three out of four new years eves (just luck of the draw) but only 1 christmas eve and 1 thanksgiving.

t some point there will be a changing of the guard and their generation will take over the family events, but they may still be at the whim of Aunt Cathy or whoever's schedule.
When you are a guest at a holiday at someone else's home timing isn't so important. You might miss the meal but can come after you get off if you work early or before work if you work late and at least see people. When you are Aunt Cathy and 35 people are coming for dinner at 3 and you have to work until even noon it is hectic. I always had 12-14 people show up an hour after I got home from work. Once I just left the house unlocked while I ran to the store for sour cream since mom always came early. So mom is there while I am trying to get food on the table and make the last minute food. I have been so tried Christmas Eve that I haven't even wanted to open gifts.
They should give the hosts and hostesses the day off and schedule half days for everyone else. People who don't celebrate that holiday should volunteer to work so others can celebrate. I never celebrate New Years Eve or Day I would work if it allowed others to be home to watch football or whatever.
