Depression thread made me very sad, scared and wondering. All of us being here for years and years and years. We had talked about everything smart and stupid and this thread made me scared for the first time for years!
I had no idea a lot of people HERE in THIS place are having issues like that. There are many people sharing their thoughts and I think everyone appreciating inputs of everyone. It is the most civil place her yet. Because it is a trouble in life to the extend where we are losing people due to the awful mental conditions like anxiety and depression.
However not every here at YM is suffering from it (thanks God)! I want to hear from people who are not having these issues but maybe understands because of the people they know, related to, dealt with... I want to hear from people without it or who overcame depression and anxieties. Maybe there are some who can really shed a light on this horrible issue. I have heard that pharmaceuticals are making tons of money on us by prescribing antidepressants and other things. I have also heard that there are natural remedies that is not so easy to deal with as pills. Like you have to pour boiling water over herbs but it is easier to just take a pill... Just looking for you, mentally healthy or became healthy YM members. Thanks

Well, I can't really contribute, not having had depression myself. I've had some family members who say they have had depression, but IMHO from listening to what people have described here, I don't think they really did. (The two who complained of it are narcissists, and I'm not sure it's possible for a narcissist to be depressed. They would complain they were depressed because people weren't doing what they wanted them to do and that upset them - I don't think that's really depression, more like sulking )
In my DH's family, he had two cousins that dealt with depression. One of them tried a medication (don't know which one) which she claimed messed her up so badly it ruined her career, she ended up suing (and winning) because of the side effects. When her sister had post partum depression after the birth of her second baby, her sister didn't want to take any drugs because of the problems her sister had had with them, so she tried other remedies, but sadly they didn't work - she shot herself and died, leaving two small kids and her DH.
So - I don't have anything positive to contribute, only what doesn't seem to work, at least not for these two cousins.

I think we all suffer from some mental issues to varying degrees. Except some dealing with it better than others. I want to find those who are actually dealing with it to find out how. It could be another book. Manual for all those who doesn't do really well.

I think everyone goes through stretches of situational depression. Situation changes and they're ok again maybe with the help of a short stint on meds. It may not be anything "special" the person did. It just self rectifies.
Chronic depression is a different animal. Managing that can sometimes be a lifetime endeavor of being aware of when you're slipping and how to combat it.

I know you say you hate exercise, but that's really one of the best natural remedies out there. You don't have to run marathons. Just make yourself go for a hike in the woods or a leisurely bike ride. Sitting around the house drinking is the absolute WORST thing to do if depressed.

I know you say you hate exercise, but that's really one of the best natural remedies out there. You don't have to run marathons. Just make yourself go for a hike in the woods or a leisurely bike ride. Sitting around the house drinking is the absolute WORST thing to do if depressed. Walking makes me think crazy upsetting thoughts. I do not know how to ride a bike. Remember I fell downstairs at 5 and my motor skills are not good. So just walking? No way. It e me nuts will drive me nuts! Drinking at dinner while watching something hilarious - how BAD is it? Woman, you nee to try! Plus so many years of experience down the drain? Are you kidding me And taking from a person who thinks root beer is awesome? Thanks but I will pass. BTW is it dinner time yet?

It's alcoholic root beer. And trust me, I've had plenty a night of drunken fun in my days. I'm not bashing that. Just saying, if depressed, holing up in the house with a bottle day after day might be making things worse, not better. What "crazy, upsetting thoughts" do you get while walking? Maybe you need to address these? My thoughts go crazy when I walk too, but I absolutely LOVE being alone with my thoughts and sorting through them in peace. Mowing lawn is good for my soul too. It takes me nearly 3 hours on the rider with the motor too loud to hear the kids. Maybe you could start a lawn mowing business!

I am the person that posted in the other thread about being unemployed for a year and still not getting clinically depressed. The things that helped me the most were staying active and volunteering.
Edit: I just wanted to add as sort of a disclaimer that telling someone who is already clinically depressed to just exercise or volunteer more is a bad idea.

I learned this the hard way after my Bill died. I thought of suicide but didn't want to take the chance of hurting myself so I didn't do it. Death is a very final solution to a temporary problem I had major battles with myself. I consciously had to decide each second that I was going to make the best of my situation. I managed to do it without any meds ......... I'm terrified of becoming dependent on meds. I talked to a lot of people that were going through the same thing I was, just at different stages on the road. Some told me to try meds, others told me to stay away from them. I chose to stay away. I knew I would get through the horrible blinding pain faster if I just fought it out. Since then my priorities have changed and some things don't matter that much to me any more. I have a very good friend that has a slight chemical imbalance and her very lite meds keep her on an even keel. Loony, good luck on finding yourself in this battle ..... I have confidence in you. hugs my friend I am a generation older than you ........ I would describe myself as content.
