I'm going with my kids there 5/7-5/13. It's not on my bucket list but they want to go and I want my family to be closer. The airfare is less than $300 rt and the four of us can stay at two different resorts with airfare and private transpiration from airport to resort then to other resort and then back to airport. Two rooms, less than 5k. Taking DS's girlfriend , too.

It's on my bucket list (butnot DH's) so I'd appreciate a trip report when you get back. Have a great time (everyone I know who has gone has enjoyed it)

I had a really good time. Learned a lot about Costa Rica and enjoyed being with the kids.

Wasn't Costa Rica on your list of places to hunker down in retirement? yep. still is. i am very impressed with that place. for a developing country, it has a lot going for it. but i have too much to do until i retire, and it really is a place for "settled objects". there is not a lot to do there, other than enjoying the place, which is enough, if you are ready to settle down.

Myself, we are retired and really have no desire to live out of country. Watching HGTV and seeing all these people finding places to vacation and retire to without any real direct flights, wasting a day and a half to get to them everytime they fly in-country (and when they go back home) seems like way too much work. I prefer a non-stop flight with say, a half hour trip from the airport to the front door, and the blender getting fired up fifteen minutes after you open the door. Between sunning in the winter, and camping most of the summer, we have little time to travel anywhere.

i understand. if i were more of a "rural person" (like the outdoors, the quiet, and doddering around the house), i think Costa Rica would be ideal for retirement. it has a lot of direct flights to the US, including several out of LA (which would be my connector). when i went there, it was literally THIS: 1) direct flight to LA from an airport 10 mins from my house 2) walk across the lobby and board the plane to CR. it could not have been easier. i can get to CR more quickly than i can get to, say, Raliegh South Carolina or Madison, WI. i think it really depends on what you want from retirement. my ideal retirement would be going to some new museum every weekend, spending the night and seeing some local live music, and heading home where i can entertain guests and family. that is perfect for me. but i am an admitted weirdo.

you'll have a blast. it is a beautiful place. and inexpensive. I did, I did! I'm back in San Jose, CR after the cruise, which was just extraordinary- totally nature-focused so I saw lots of forest and mangrove environments, saw glorious fish on the two snorkeling excursions, and if I had a lifetime bird sighting list it would have doubled. I'm venturing into the city today to check out the museums. I've already put down a deposit on another cruise- I have two years to use it and will get $500 off, refundable if I change my mind. Most likely Baja and the Sea of Cortez in early 2019.
