I know surprise discounts are good when grocery shopping, but how often do you indulge when it isn't something you are expecting? I found some discounted non dairy desserts in the freezer case near the French fries.
At 2.50 a pint, it was a compelling price even though I wasn't looking to buy any today. I bought one pint. I wish I had more $$, because it would have been nice to try all the flavors. Depending on what store I am in, those pints could have retailed usually between around $4.50 to $5.99 a pint.
Turns out cashew milk snicker doodle non dairy dessert is tasty. I bet the choc chip cookie coconut milk one was good too.

One of my favorite! Although the cashew milk capachino is my absolute favorite!
You got that for 2.50 ? I would have bought them all.
They aren't stopping making them are they? .... I was at Walmart yesterday (the only reason i ever go to walmart, because its the only local store that carries it... ) and there were none. I figured they just stoppd carrying it... but now i'm worried.

These were grouped on a shelf away from the aisle with ice cream and non dairy desserts.
I do kind of want to buy one left in each flavor, if just to try them. I did go back. I was going to get the lone vanilla almond milk one, but decided on trying the cashew milk cappuccino given how tasty the snicker doodle one was. I could have walked out with four and still left a couple flavors behind.
Yes, 2.50. The one receipt said originally 4.47, now on clearance or something like that. As you know, 4.47, is a pretty good regular price for these non dairy frozen desserts.

So, for surprise discounts on snacks and desserts, I might buy a couple to have on hand.
But, I take full advantage of surprise discounts on produce/meats/pantry staples, etc.. I know by heart the rate at which we use things up and by memory what the usual loss leader price is. I buy up items on surprise discount based upon those two criteria.

I might be more inclined to try an unknown product if it's deeply discounted. If it is a known product, I will probably stock up.
(I stumbled on the shower/shampoo mix that we use at half price. Now I have for about 14 months. I rarely buy for more than a year - I consider the shelf life plus that I would like to be able to use it up in case we would move, which we likely would know several months in advance.)

I always visit the discount bin area, so I go in knowing there might be something I want. If it is something I haven't tried, I'll buy one and try it, then go back if I like it (and hopefully there is some still left). If it's something I know I like, I'll stock up.

When I found my favorite tea on Clearance, I bought all they had.
When I found original Fiber One at 1/2 price, I bought all they had. Then I drove across town to another Rite-Aid and bought all THEY had.
When I found kitty litter on clearance once, I bought all 17 containers. I lined them up along one wall of the garage.

my holiday is coming up starting 4/23. I 'planned' to make chicken matzo ball soup and need ALL the ingredients except eggs. That will cost $3-3.50. Jewel has Lipton mix on sale for $1 and a BOGO coupon. I'm in - cheaper & easier just a bit high in sodium.

It depends on what it is that's been discounted. If it's something I use (and a brand I've tried) and stocking up is viable - I do. I try to avoid buying stuff I don't really need to eat (I'm plenty fat already and have no way to use up even more calories!) even if it's nearly free or free.
If something is on my shopping list (or my scavenger's list) I'm more likely to try a new or different brand if the price is right.
I also watch 'best by dates' or "use by dates" so I don't wind up with a lot of a product as it's getting 'old' - and yes I know lots of products are perfectly good for sometimes months after their 'best by' or 'use by' date.
I went out shopping on the day after Christmas and scored Kitty litter at an unexpectedly super low price - I loaded up my car with about 400 pounds of litter (had to strategically distribute the weight so as to not overload my car) .. Gave some of it to a friend and am storing the rest of it on the stairs to my attic - either I or my friend will use it.

I have a basement that doubles as a stock room. It is all non-perishable stuff that I regularly use. They frequently have drives at school for stuff like shampoo, cleaning products, etc. . . . the stuff that food stamps and WIC doesn't cover. It allows me to be very generous. But I will admit that I have to be careful to rotate my stock. I have a ton of cheap Tide and Gain down there. DH loves the cheap pods I got. I try to let him use those while I use the liquid stuff. It is all good. I love my stockroom.

I got a 2 lb. plus several ounces of Whitman's chocolate assortment for $10. About 1/3 the retail price. They were a long way from expiring. People checked at the social I took them to. Cut off the discount price tag with the full retail price before taking the outer cellophane off. The ladies loved them. Raved about having chocolates and in a large number. Everyone wanted to know where I got them, how much they cost. I dodged the issue and said they were a gift. Then said bad gramma bought them, which is me. They were certain the chocolates were a left over gift from Valentine's Day or Christmas gift. This was certainly a G-d wink find.
