OR KEEP OUT!
I remember you all (99%) were stomping all over me saying American Parents Do NOT pay for kids weddings.
life.familyeducation.com/weddings/personal-finance/47218.html
ENJOY!!!
As you can see, tradition was not financially kind to the bride's family. Fortunately, at least if you're looking at the situation from the viewpoint of that family, times have changed. Rather than burden one family with practically the entire cost of a wedding, it is common practice these days for both families—and sometimes the bride and groom—to share expenses.
Some modern options for paying for a wedding include:
•The bride and groom pay for the entire wedding
•Expenses are divided evenly between the couple, the bride's family, and the groom's family
•Each family covers the cost for the number of guests it invites
•The bride's family and groom's family split the expenses evenly

You forgot to post this part.
How you decide to divide the costs of your son's or daughter's wedding depends primarily on the financial situation of each family, and of the bride and groom themselves. Circumstances and common sense—not tradition—now dictate who will pay what for a wedding.

Not a single person here said parents NEVER pay for weddings. Just that these days MANY brides and grooms pay for their own.
I'll bet if you could find an accurate stats report somewhere, that option #1 and #2 are the most common.

Also, if you want to take tradition into account-> in olden times girls did (mostly)not get expensive education and stayed home helping out until they married rather young by today's standards. So the education/rich people wedding paid for by parents can amount to double or even triple dipping

If you are going to post an article to "prove" trends today, you should probably find something that isn't at least 4 years old (based on the article comments) and who knows how much older as it could have been written years before that and reposted as filler.

The results are consistent. Both those polls ended up with about being about 50% Bride and Groom paying all and 20% "a little of everything" (both parents/B&G all chipped in). Only 30% parents paid 100%.

My daughter is getting married next year, and I'm not paying. I think it's a grand waste of money for a party. i'd rather gift them money towards a down payment for a home. I also paid for her undergrad degree.

Too many strings if parents pay. An acquaintance is getting married this summer and is regretting taking her parents up on their offer of paying for the wedding as it's turning out to be nothing at all like she wanted. She's pretty level headed, but her parents are living the dream of having a huge wedding for their only child and have made it into something she's uncomfortable with. Her fiancee wanted a small wedding that they paid for themselves, so he's staying out of the way and letting her deal with her parents. We'll see if they all survive the wedding.

tloonya Is your daughter getting married? Not now, but she's anticipating having to pay for her whole wedding. Most have been telling her that most parents do not pay for their kid's weddings. They may contribute some, but the majority of them pay for their own weddings.

My daughter is getting married next year, and I'm not paying. I think it's a grand waste of money for a party. i'd rather gift them money towards a down payment for a home. I also paid for her undergrad degree. I'm doing all three. Paying for most of a wedding, gifting money toward the house they are buying, and I paid for her undergrad degree. Because I can afford to . And because some of it is inherited money. If it impaired my retirement at all, it would be a different story entirely.
Her $100,000 grad degree is on her own however.

lynnerself That's very nice of you. I really can't afford a whole wedding, and I really, really want to retire in 6.5 years.

The article says what we said, not all parents pay for the whole cost of their kids weddings.

I guess my dad and stepmom paid 75% of the wedding. They also gifted us our honeymoon accommodations and gave us $5,000 to start our house savings. I regret none of if.

Yeah, go ahead. Marry into the family. I dare ya! You think it's a joke, but read the other thread. She's already angling for an invitation to move in....

When I got married in 1961 my parents told me they were not going to pay for anything. At this time it was traditional for the bride's family to pay for the wedding and the groom's family to pay for rehearsal dinner.
So I made my dress and a matching shirt for Bill. We got married in our little church and Bill's parents gave us a cake and punch reception at their home 3 houses from the church. We let family members and the church membership know when and where we were getting married and that they were invited. We had maybe 25 guests. All I really wanted was Bill and I, the preacher and 2 witnesses.
After the reception we went to my parents house and I got my things and moved into the apt we had rented the week before.
Short, sweet ............. and lasted until his death 37 years later.

And again...its 2016.
