Hickle's thread about ancestors got me thinking about mine and the artifacts/antiquities that I've inherited from mine. If the house was ever on fire and I had the chance, I know what I'd try to get out while I could. I have several 'things' that are invaluable and irreplaceable that are from said ancestors:
My grandmother kept in touch with a cousin in Prague during the communist years and he produced several beautiful colored pencil drawings of the town my great-grandmother was from, as well as of her house and the family church. I have two of them; luckily I was old enough to recognize the history involved and commissioned them before he became to old to draw and they, along with my great-grandmother's shot glasses from Bohemia and the jewelry box that my grandfather had made for my grandmother during the 1933 Chicago World's Fair would be the items I'd try to get out of the burning house.
Kids and pets acknowledged as first priority - do you have an ancestor's valued belonging you'd try to save?

No. I have some chairs that originally belonged to great-grandparents, but they dont mean enough to me to risk fire.
I don't think any of my own stuff is that precious to me. If the house starts burning, I'll grab my eyeglasses, purse with wallet and ID, and make sure the dogs get out.

Other than the pets, I would grab a painted study done by my great-great-uncle while he was an art student in Paris (1902) of 'La belle ferronnière' attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci which hangs in the Louvre. The study has been passed down through four family generations and in a few years, to a fifth.

I'd make sure my cats get out. I have a box of mementos that were my fathers that I'd grab & an envelope of cash that's in my dresser. Other than that my purse & a pair of shoes & I'm out the door.
When my BBF's family home burned almost to the ground one firefighter asked where they kept their photo albums & he went in & grabbed them first thing. I guess they knew from experience what people wished they had saved later.

Nothing I would risk dying for but if I had time and was near them I'd grab my grandmother's Chinese lions on my dresser and the photo collage I made DH of the kids.
I have all our photos backed up on Photobucket or on facebook so unless the internet dies I can always retrieve them.

After the pets, the letters that my dad wrote my mom while he was away and my mom's jewelry. At this point, there really are the only things I have left from my parents.

I don't think anything but the kids, cats and gecko. There is a box of pictures in my closet, but I'm guessing I wouldn't be thinking about them at that point. DS has an emergency prep bag in the laundry room near the door going out that we SHOULD grab, but again, not sure I'd remember.

In order: kids then wife, dogs, guns( at least one) and if there is time, some of the kids' stuff. The rest of it while valuable, it is not worth risking your life for even if it is irreplaceable.

The cat, my violins, the envelope we have our birth and marriage certs in, whatever jewelry I could grab (not much but a few rings I like). Probably the laptop, most of my pictures are on here.

Kids, DH, and the dog together in one big sweep. IF I had time, I'd grab my purse for convenience sake (credit cards, cash, debit cards, health insurance cards, etc. are all kind of PITA to replace). As for other tangible family heirlooms and artifacts, all of that was lost when the tree crushed our house, so we'd be out in a hearbeat during the next catastrophe because there is really nothing else left to save.

Other than DH and my purse, nothing. Like Drama, the photos I care about are all stored electronically now, so I'm not worried about that.
DH and his first wife had a house fire; it didn't burn the house down, but lots of smoke and water damage. He said that she was racing around trying to grab photo albums and important papers, while he was trying to get her OUT OF THE HOUSE! Apparently, it's still to this day a sore spot and they've been divorced for 20 years!!

kiddo, bag with wallet, phone. That's probably it. Maybe go back for the engagement ring since it's the most valuable thing I own.

My kids and my dog...if I had time to plan (hurricane coming or something like that) I would grab all of the pictures and videos of kids/family and the stuff they have made me over the years (all in a memories box). Everything else can be replaced.

Kids aside, box with paperwork, box with my mom's jewelry and my laptop. If I loose my laptop I will loose every.single picture I have ever taken of the kids. Over 20,000 of them.

1) DH
2) the back-up drive (forget the computers, they can be replaced). Most of the family photos have been scanned and archived to back-up.
3) the cats
4) the safe (it's briefcase size; no money and no jewelry, but it has all of our important papers)
Everything else is insured and can be replaced. I'd be sorry to lose some of the family artwork, but that's pretty far down the list considering the first four things.

I have many small mementoes from my family, but anything that really means a lot to me is stored in a fireproof safe, so hopefully it would be OK, almost everything else is replaceable, except for my grandfathers shot gun which hangs on my wall. I suppose I would grab that as I went out the door.
I should add that I live in a log home, due to the mass of the structure, I would have between three-four days before everything burned.

If you have Amazon Prime you can backup all your photos there for free too. I haven't figured out how to sync it with my phone yet, but my phone is synced to Dropbox, so every time I take a picture it uploads to Dropbox, then I move them over periodically when my free space in Dropbox runs out.

I'd grab my passport (green card is inside) and the enveloppe right below it with $500 in small bills kept there for just that reason (EQs)

The reality is - - DH would grab the back-up drive and the safe (they're in the same spot) while I would start for the cats. We've actually talked about this as part of our emergency plan because we live in earthquake country.
He's self-employed and has client information on back-up, so it makes sense for him to go for that first so that he still has a job!
I noticed that other people have said "I'd go for the cat/dog if I could . . . " House pets tend to scatter and hide in emergency/scary situations, and I have four of them to try and corral in a very short period of time.
It would take me/us far longer to locate and grab the cats than it would to save DH's job. But I would definitely save whoever I could . . . . just sayin' . . .

Well I guess having a job after you lose everything is kinda important! I've thought about the cats scattering & hiding especially if the smoke alarm is screaming. I know for a fact my little black one will go under my bed & my bed rails come almost to the floor so I can only get my arm under there. She hides there during T-storms so I'm sure in the case of fire or earthquake she'd dive for cover. One has a super secret hiding space that I have yet to discover. I'll think she's outside & she'll appear out of nowhere. I might be able to save my boy cat. He's a bit of a mama's boy so he might come to me.

After making sure that the kids & dog were safely out, I'd grab old family pictures, & if I had time, some of my Mom's embroidery work, & the tablecloth my Grandmother made.
It WOULD be a pain to lose financial records, but at least our taxes have already been filed.

I have a few things that would really hurt if they were lost forever. None of them are worth any money.
- The shadow box I made for my paternal grandfather... it has his bar application from 1952, one of the lapel pins from when he ran for judge, his stamped passport, his gavel cufflinks, and a few pictures. - The set of 5 framed nature sketches that hung in my grandpa's office for years and are now on the wall behind our stairs. The artist is a guy from my hometown who ran a small rock/gem shop where I spent a lot of time as a kid. - Box of Christmas ornaments (not all are meaningful, but the ones with DD's handprints and the ones I received as gifts would be impossible to replace). - The quilts MIL made for DD before she was born.
Good thread! Really makes you think about what is important.

Kids and I'd yell for DH to follow me. If I was running by my purse would probably grab that, if not, oh well.
