Someone here does translations. I am finally getting the kids their dual citizenship (the embassy was apparently like, getting to university age huh? ) ... Anyway I need documents translated and I'm sure I could look it up online, but how do I tell 'reputable' in this case? They need to be official, obviously.

Look for certified translator. The documents have to be certified.

Is there like 'a place' to look? Or just google what's near me but make sure it's certified?

Sorry I don't know anything about finding translators, but just wondering what is the advantage of dual citizenship? So they can go to college there, or is there more to it?

The embassy should have translators, or a referral list.

I don't know that they will choose to go to college there? But Romania is EU. Most of their cousins are actually in London at this point. And frankly, I guess Cruz could conceivably win the election

My relatives about half in US and half in Poland, and not much in either. I guess if we ever consider moving over there, I can look into it some more.

You can try Google Translator translate.google.com/
Enter it in one box, and it will translate it for you.
I have not used this myself, I remember hearing about it and looked it.

Google translator gives you a good idea but I would not use it for official document.
I work for a German company, and we get a lot of documents that are translated to English, and it is very obvious that it is just translation program. To get a really good translation you have to use someone who is a professional translated.

Google Translate is NOT suitable for anything that actually matters. It is all right on individual words or small, discrete portions of text, but it cannot parse context over a whole document or for the most part even over a paragraph, so it resorts to the first dictionary definition of a word or the most common definition or uses some other algorithm based on the immediately surrounding words to make translation decisions. It is often wrong and can be dangerously wrong.
It is improving, and it is fairly reliable at a 1+ to 2 level of discourse, so it looks pretty good when used with simple, everyday conversations or communications full of common phrases and uncomplicated ideas. Beyond that, though, it is simply gambling to rely on it. It can be useful to get a general idea of the content of a document, but whatever it comes up with should be reviewed by an actual human who is proficient in the original and target languages.
In any event, it is not an acceptable means for translation of an official document or for documents to be used for official purposes.

I could translate myself but these are official documents and the Consulate asks for "legal translations" and they also have to be notarized.

You might be able to shave a bit off the cost by doing the translation yourself and then just getting the "official" translator to review and sign off on them. I don't do translations for "the public," so I have no idea whether that is even something they would do, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

When you get something notarized all they are doing is verifying the identity of the person signing the document. Nothing about the content of the document.
Last year DS got a jury summons and signed that he was not eligible due to being full time student away from home. They sent a follow up letter saying it had to be notarized. We had to go to bank that week to get some home sale stuff notarized and took him with us. Notary verified his identity with his driver license. He still could have been lying about being a student ( he wasn't).

All the documents in cause need to be translated by an approved entity and stamped/affixed by the Department of State. There is this thing called Apostille of The Hague and I believe only the EU countries are signitories. In their case, all legal translators are accredited thru The Hague agreement. The translator in their case is also a notary recognized by the agreement. All others, non members of EU, need the Apostille from the Department of State. I think is just a waste of time, money, energy and a good source for frustration.
Why do you have a Consulate/Embassy in a country if you don't provide on site legal translations, legalizations of documents and so on? It makes no sense!
