What disaster relief organization do you feel best for donations? I'm thinking Mercy Corp but there are plenty of choices. Red Cross, Unicef (BLECH!) Save the Children etc?
Who is best at delivering value?

Red Cross in Japan gets money from Red Cross here. They are already there so probably best.
None use your cash donations to fund the current crisis. They use their emergency fund and use your donations to replenish it would take too long to wait for a crisis to collect donations and shop for supplies. I heard texting a donation can take 90 days since they wait for you to pay your cell phone bill before paying the money. They have people in the snow trying to stay warm under cardboard so the relief is urgent. They can spend all the current funds now then gear up for the next crisis, there is always a next crisis.

Direct Relief International gives 100% of your donation to the victims of whatever disaster you specify, typically through shipments medical supplies (bought wholesale) or by giving the money to medical units already in place within the country.

The Red Cross is always my first choice. You can donate on their website.

Ministry Watch.com will tell you their efficiency and a lot more.
The Salvation Army is international, also. We have donated to Habitat for Humanity as it's a long term solution.
I put a damper on a coffee group when I asked about animal relief even though a lot of those people house strays.

For immediate response, I always go with the Red Cross. I think they do a better job of that than anyone. But for the long haul rebuilding process, I think the best agency varies with the location and circumstances of the disaster.

If the Red Cross is good enough for Sandra Bullock's $1million then it is good enough for my $20. ;D
