Just sharing, just because. I got a collection letter for my Macy's credit card account for $273. I almost never use that card and pay it off in full every time. The last time I used it was in May 2015 and we paid it off when the bill came. I never got another statement after that. I checked my credit and it was listed as delinquent and close and it really tanked my credit score. I called the collection company and they said the original unpaid charge was from March 2015. I am sending in a written request for debt validation and then will dispute it showing our evidence that we were paid in full in Jun 2015. I am curious as to what happened, though. Just a mistake on Macy's part? Fraud? Something else? Someone had the address changed on the account when they charged up the $273. Don't laugh at this. It happened to a friend of mine years ago and the "culprits" turned out to be employees in the store. Don't remember all the details but it happened to be a card that she hadn't used very much so didn't think much about not receiving a statement. Took a while but she did get it straightened out. Really though, I bet you could go to the store and talk to customer service, even if that person can't help you they can probably get you on the phone with someone appropriate.

This is actually one of those times when having all your accounts linked to something like Mint or one of the other third party sites is nice. You just log in and at a glance see all your credit card balances. I have a ton of open cards I rarely or never use and my credit union has an account management service like this. Whenever I log in to check my checking it shows all 15 or so other account balances. I could easily see missing something like that on a card that isn't used often otherwise.

Your post reminded me that it was a clerk in customer service and an employee on the floor that did this to my friend They worked in tandem!!!!

When this happened with my medical bill, no amount of begging the original creditor would allow me to pay. I wound up paying the collection agency the full amount, including the penalties. I hated doing it, but I wanted it gone.

I just called out natural gas utility to find out the balance on our account because I think we had an overpayment on the account and I just wanted to verify. This is the first time I have had to call them. I get a customer service person and they will not talk with me because my wife set up the account and she didn't make me an authorized user. It is a natural gas account. I own the fucking house. Christ all mighty. Every corner I turn I become ludditier and ludditier.

I called to threaten to cancel because they keep jacking the rate up (it's my get them to lower it for a few years tactic). Well, apparently the account was set up by my ex back in 2009 and they won't deal with me. Seriously? I've been paying this bill for years for my house.

I suspect that they have had people go into accounts and change/add/delete services that the person setting up the accounts has no knowledge about....but winds up financially on the hook for.

I just want to know if there is a credit balance on the account or if I owe $212. it is confusing to me. I am old.

You think you don't need security on that account, but if anyone could access it, they could change the name or address and use it as proof of identity. Collection agency scammers could make money simply by changing addresses and waiting for the inevitable bill defaults.
