Meh reads as not challenging enough. Is that such a bad thing? It's possible I'm projecting.

Unfortunately very true. How at risk are you of them getting rid of you instead? If it is of ethical concerns doesn't your university have an anonoymus hotline? You could call and ask them for advice. Usually if you get the ball rolling that way you get some protection against retaliation. I'm not even there yet. I'm gonna talk to someone in my department who has would have a level head about this. Also, still fact gathering.

Hang in there, speed will come when you know all the quirks and differences that come with any new job.........

Resume help.... I have a couple managers I could reach out to, to review my resume. They're in mortgage which I desperately want out of, and it of course ups the risk of it getting back to my current employer. I blew my shot at using the career help from old company. What other non-scammy places should I look for for help? I've applied haphazardly to a handful of jobs over the last few months with no bites and honestly I think my resume looks like crap.

The career coach I hired was awesome. She went over my resume with me.
That's the only place where having to hop every 3-5 years was a benefit it has forced me to stay really current.
I have not had success breaking out of my field yet but we did go over tailoring it.
I did get a bite from a grant writing company so something worked. Whether I would have gotten it IDK but just a call was a step forward.
I had to sort through a lot of coaches to find one that wasn't just a rehash of the crap they use in the school system like personality tests.
Definitely look for one that offers a free consult first so you can decide of they meet your needs.

I think I have/do most of the things she recommends but my career path looks weird. I want to put down I make more as an assistant than I did as a manager so I didnt really go backwards. It wasn't really management- more a sme/trainer role...but how to say that and be factually accurate without looking like I was demoted. And how to say I will show up and do whatever job needs doing to move the needle farthest/fastest, and do it well regardless of title. Eta...I'm working on updates. I'm also trying to figure out how to explain why I want to change industries. Until the last couple years working in mortgage did feel good to get people into homes which I see as one if the easiest ways to build stability and generational wealth. I'm targeting insurance jobs...and insurance is an important piece of personal finances. But I'm not finding compelling reasons for why I want to make that change.

My boss is out of the office and for the first time in years I'm not listed on his out of office. My first thought was elation that maybe I was being laid off.
Not a good head space to be in.
I couldn't sleep so spent some time on a master resume and cover letter. I think I'm getting some traction, but lots of room for improvement.

A few of us here might be open to proof reading if you're willing to share. Could remove personal info. I'm a good proof reader and have looked at resumes for potential colleagues, so I'll bite. could PM you my email addy.

Msg me here when you send it just in case it goes to spam and then you're like azucena offered and then I never heard from her ROFL. Posting my work saga here... Things have been at a standstill with Sales Guy whom several of us reported conflict of interest affair to hr in late summer. They report up thru same grand boss, hadn't disclosed in our semi-annual conflict, and went on work trip together with a group. She never travels and there wasn't a business reason for her to go. Rumor had it that one of them had to change depts within 30 days. That came and went - nothing. Meanwhile, SG continues to barely be accessible during work hours, answers almost no email, and doesn't pass thru client requests or our completed client work back out without a ton of prompting. Yet he insists on being a client gatekeeper and maintaining control of all communication. Meanwhile, she spends her time covering for him, including manipulating internal reports about things like how many client calls and mtgs he has per week. We're all heavily monitored on those goals this yr so everyone is watching but bosses don't catch the manipulation bc it's slick. Anyone who looks at his empty calendar and compares to other sales folks would easily see the problem. Plus he's well known for no showing on both internal and external mtgs as well as being perpetually tardy to the tune of 15-20 mins. Then, I learned that he and my boss have a pretty tight relationship so I cut way back on outlining missing work bc my boss is not tactful and not to be trusted. Before I knew that, my boss took some of my complaints and had a man-to-man come to Jesus chat with him - his words. My boss also chuckles to me about the affair being sewing wild oats - gross. And he's in the group that feels totally sorry for how SG got screwed in his divorce based on boss's own nasty divorce yrs ago. Talk about good old boys club Anyway, two weeks ago boss sends me urgent msg and says we need to talk before end of day. Great, what now.

So boss calls me and says I need to watch my back bc shits about to hit the fan. SG is about to be canned and escorted from the building so to speak even though he's 100% virtual in another state - another huge problem for accountability bc dude is never online.
I say, ok, what does that mean for our largest client acct that I handle with SG. He says I should be sure to cover everything and not let any balls drop. Um, okay, you mean like what I've already been doing since 2020? I'd like the extra paycheck to go with that sir. And impossible task to cover it all when SG is gatekeeper and has trained client to only ask him. And SG has the nerve to jump down my throat any time I take "too much" initiative in a who do I think I am kinda way. Boss says keep doing what you're doing, it will all be over soon. I've got your back. So then I say what about junior actuary who has the rest of the accounts with SG? Is he getting the same warning? He's new to the role and to the accts so some clients don't even know him yet. No way he's succeeding past SG gatekeeper. And remember bossman, how I pointed out to you that this is 3rd actuary in 4 yrs assigned to work with SG? The other two quit bc they got tired of the shenanigans and doing both jobs but they were each too polite, politically correct, and career conscious to complain or go up against him. They just quietly made their lives better by finding a new path and leaving SG problem behind. Boss is like yeah everyone knows it's a problem now. Sit tight, walk out happens on fri.

So there's no good HR, business etiquette world were I should have been given 4 days notice of SG getting fired. My boss shouldn't have even know. My grandboss reports to head honcho who is also SG head honcho. To complicate things, SG boss left the company in July and we are still hiring for replacement.
Anyways all that to say, by my count hr, honcho, grandboss, boss, and me all know about firing 4 days away. Boss should have said watch your back I'm not at liberty to say more. Or better yet, he shouldn't have been in the know either.
You guys that conversation was a month ago. I've lived in limbo since then....until yesterday.
SG says we need to talk before end of day. Great. I get on video with him and he says I've turned in notice, my last day is 1/2 (means he get full 2022 bonus, likely 30-40k, asshole). Also means two more paychecks for doing nothing.
I act surprised. He starts on a saga about how I know the last couple yrs were rough and he's been behind the scenes negotiating his next move, yadda yadda. He'll finish projects x, y, z before he goes. We'll tell client together on monday. You'll continue to take a great leadership role with them. I say thx for the heads up but I gotta go bc I have work to do before another mtg.
He called another salesperson right after me and she had to hear more of his sob story and how he's going to take 6 months off to clear his head and then figure out next steps. Dude is about 55. Oh, and of course, affair partner is 42.

Wow that's a saga. So do you think someone tipped him off that he was going to get canned? So that he turned in his notice and was able to get his bonus before that happened?

Job hunting is exhausting. I got a call back from my cover letter, but nothing since I sent my resume which I'm trying (and failing) to just let go and move on from.
Really trying to take my own advice work on it a bit each week, not obsess, focus on forward progress. But that is so much easier said than done.

I had a thought this weekend about changing gears a bit and would like some perspective - especially negatives.
I wouldn't quit the job hunt entirely. I like my resume and core cover letter and since I'm targeting similar jobs it doesn't need a ton of customization each time so I can continue to look at job boards and places I have flagged and apply for anything that looks interesting.
But...I'm thinking about signing up for a medical coding certification. It's a 4-15 month course depending on how many hours you commit to it, and mortgage processors in my fb group are reporting getting hired the same month they finish the cert. Pay varies but full time it looks like a solid 45k on the lowest end just starting out and room to bump that up another 20-30k as you go.
I'm not necessarily looking for this to be my full time gig though. It looks to me like a well paying, at home side hustle. That if I survive this market in mortgage could give a nice boost to the slow periods. And would give me the ability to be more aggressive about changing industries and starting over at the bottom of the payscale.
What I'm reading says job growth is expected to grow 9% in the field between now and 2029. Cost of programs range from $2900 - $5000.
So negatives? Things I'm overlooking and/or should research more?

I know from working with hospitals and medical practices for many years that coders are in demand and (for medical records work) highly paid. You can get work from those types of businesses or payers.
The work demands great focus and attention to detail and ability to concentrate through long-winded physicians' notes. If that sounds good to you, you should go for it, I think. If that sounds stultifying, run!

Just tolerable or not.

raeoflyte I moved into medical coding during covid. My experience with it so far has been mostly positive. There are definitely a lot of jobs once you break into the field, but getting the first one can be challenging. Feel free to message me if you have questions.

It did go well. It almost wasn't even an interview. I told one of my old colleagues it seemed more like I met these folks through a networking opportunity and we sat down to chat over coffee. I need every good thought sent my way over the next few weeks that I can get.
