Carl, I know in my situation in NOVA renting makes more financial sense for now. I can rent a nicer quality place, in the exact area I need, in my price range. I cannot buy anything like that in my price range. It used to bother me, but as long as I'm saving money elsewhere, I tell myself I will still come out ahead. I think that will be our situation also if we do indeed have to move there! Nothing against NOVA/DC or MD but I would prefer to stay in MA for now!

That is south east Florida, about 1.5 hours north of Miami. Is that a good or bad thing?

Wow I am so sorry to hear 1) Did your husband hear back? I hope he gets that job and the offer he wants. 2) keep applying and looking, something is out there for you! ((HUGGS)) Thanks- You too. It's been really hard for me mentally knowing that the place is shutting down. I think I'll feel better once it's actually announced. Well, probably not, but at least I won't feel like I'm lying to everyone, everyday. I haven't heard from DH yet. But there is a recruiter involved so it may be a bit before we hear of an offer. I'll be happier when I know one of us has a secure job. Yeah must be hard having to carry that around all day long. No chances of them selling the business to an interested party and not have to shut down? Keeping my fingers crossed for both of you!

Me- The owners here have been trying to sell for the last 18 months, with no luck. They've decided to liquidate and we are expected to stop operations mid February. No one knows by myself, the CEO, and the owners. Really hard because they just don't want to run it anymore. Good company, good reputation, making money and just coming into our busy season- and they are liquidating. Wow, that is weird. Did they not get any offers at all or what? It's very odd to have a profitable company and have no buyers. What's the scoop?

Carl, you are absolutely right to interview for everything but you have bought a house, your wife is both working and in school. Clearly, if you CAN stay where you are, you'd be better off. Now that you've been let go, I'm sure you've gone over the past few weeks of work over and over and over again. Do you know what happened? I raised the possibility that you told a "friend" at work that you were looking, you said your wife agreed that may have been the case. I think that whatever happens, going forward, even though it's against your open nature, you need to be more quiet about how you feel, what your plans are, etc. Talk to your family, talk to us, but keep quiet at work, even with your closest work friends. Best of luck going forward, I hope you rock tomorrow's interview! Also, this may seem ridiculous, but please watch this TED talk, and follow her advice tomorrow before your interview. www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are?language=en

It's nice from the one time I've been there, but I agree I heard it was a higher cost area. Or rather I should say it has a lot of higher cost areas. Though it is right on the ocean so I'm sure that's part of it.

Yep. That's how I remember it. My DH's parents lived there. I wasn't sure if it had changed since then. Doesn't sound like it.

My sister lives in Boca part of the year too (her BF inherited his mom's place there). I've never been. Frankly it doesn't appeal to me much.
They used to alternate between LI and Boca but her BF has advanced Parkinson's so he stays in FL all year round now. My sister still spends time in both places.

Carl, I may be "Captain Obvious" here but there is an ENORMOUS senior residence in Boca, Century Village. Maybe it's not in the chic / spendy part? Like I said I've never been there, I only know what my sister has told me about it. And that for my 50th birthday she offered to either come to my party, or pay for my flight to Boca, or pay for my flight to NY. I opted for NY.
But it may be something to keep in mind, or look into. If your store is in the middle of this HUGE retirement community, I'm guessing it will certainly be very different from a store in the "spendy" part of Boca.

Yeah must be hard having to carry that around all day long. No chances of them selling the business to an interested party and not have to shut down? Keeping my fingers crossed for both of you! No chance at all. Been looking for about 18 months. But there is only a handful of companies that would even have the capital to buy it. I was hoping to win powerball, but no luck there. So they are selling off the inventory to Evil Corp and will be closing the doors. But it will have a long tail end, while we close everything out. It's feasible that I'd have a job all the way through 2016- perhaps longer-just because of my position. I do have a sick sense of satisfaction that they have failed to listen to me on the implications of doing things this way. It's going to cost the owners way more than they think it will. Especially in taxes. CEO and I were laughing about it last week. CEO told me the owners think I (and the others they need) will stay out of loyalty. Ummm- no.

That is south east Florida, about 1.5 hours north of Miami. Is that a good or bad thing? Depends. Some parts of VERY spendy and can be ritzy. Some people think they are "hurdy turdy" (phrase from Sweet Home Alabama). The better schools are in the west part of Boca. You can still get to Ft. Lauderdale in a reasonable time. Getting to Miami would suck, but that's in general anyway. You would be 3 hours away from Orlando so when your future kid wants to go, it's not far. The Florida resident rates don't hurt either. The almost constant warm can get old after a while. Not shoveling snow does have it perks but the constant 80s for several months does wear thin. You hope for the days when it's the 70s. Keep ind mind, you'll see people wear boots and scarves when it reaches 70. That's cold and winter wear for them. If you aren't used to hearing other languages spoken besides English, then it would be strange to hear Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian, German, etc. while you are out shopping with some English thrown in. Spanish and Portuguese are more of the foreign languages you'd hear. Also, the snowbird Canadians (especially Quebec) frequently down in the general south Florida area during the winter months too.

I'm sorry, but that is so me, although I live in north central FL. But hey, I don't get a chance to wear warm clothes much.

That's the same excuse they use down there too!

I went to Miami in January. 5 degrees when I flew out of BWI. 70s were heaven. I went to the football game in short sleeves, flip flops and jeans. I must have had 20 people ask me if I was cold. They even put sweaters on their dogs at that temperature!! They would never ever survive real cold.

I still wear a hoodie if it's in the 70's. (I really don't belong in Michigan.)

Oh shit, I am 1 hour and 15 minutes early to the interview!!! Left early because on Sunday the GPS made me take the Mass turnpike and I was worried I would hit the typical traffic going towards Boston this morning. So last minute I decided to take the local route this morning... No traffic... 1 h 15 minutes early to the job interview

Don't go in to the interview location that early. Find somewhere else to sit and have a little coffee. Really, a LITTLE - you want to relax and get ready, not be overcaffeinated, amped up and having to pee...
Good luck.

Thank you, going to watch it now again and I shared it with my wife! OK, don't laugh too hard but...
I read a study about how assuming certain "power" poses can have a measurable effect on how confident you are. It started as a joke, but my sailing crew and I have been standing in the "Superman" type pose - chest forward, posture tall, hands on hips - for a few minutes before heading out to the race course. OK, you can laugh now, we do. Anyway, we've been kicking some serious ass lately so the pose doesn't hurt.
You've got time, practice some power poses. But maybe in the bathroom in case someone from the company you're about to interview with happens to be in Starbucks with you.
