This is music to my ears! I will mention this to DH. We don't want a heavily scheduled trip, so we plan to wing it and see what the weather is like. We will adjust our plans accordingly. I have no problem driving a few hours to see something, but 8 hrs is ridiculous.
The boys are 7 & 9. I would definitely like to do some hiking and ferry somewhere as a day trip.

Tell hubby he can definitely "be back this way again." If he wants to see Oregon: fly into Portland, rent a car and meander down the coast. When you get to Gold Beach, turn east to Grant's Pass and head back up highway 5 to Portland. Or vice versa. It is a wonderful scenic and historic trip. You can even camp part of the way (at the beaches, if you rent basic equipment in Portland). Boys your sons' age would love the "adventure." Lots of hiking, scenic passes, waterfalls, nature, adventuring, etc.

The name is Nordstrom. It is neither plural nor possessive, though people say it that way all the time. She was intentionally repeating the same error just to annoy me. Actually it's "Nordies"!!!

I thought Lenin was in Fremont, which is also a lot of fun if you like quaint little stores etc. If it is raining cats and dogs, and the kids are small enough, you can also go wait it out at REI since they have a fun playstructure inside

If you aren't from a place with an ocean consider a drive around the Olympic Peninsula take the ferry to start then drive north to Port Townsend then Port Angeles the Forks. Forks has a rain forest and at least one huge tree and some deer and elk. Ocean beaches are rocky with little crabs and things, don't let the kids hurt them. Then Ocean Shores it has a sandy beach. Westport has a fishing fleet you can do a one day whale watching or bottom fishing and gift shops. They have resorts along the ocean and motels, do it over 2 days and it is a relaxing time. Hurricane Ridge and some other things along the way if you want to stop. Port Townsend has some historic houses.
I can drive from Seattle to Westport in a couple hours catch a 5AM fishing boat fish all day and still be back the same day but exhausting and some get sea sick.

I would definitely echo the idea that it depends on where you are coming from. There is so much outdoor diversity around here that you will certainly find something unlike where you live, which really is one of the main benefits of travelling. Mountains, lakes, ocean, almost anything you want except for desert....
If you do decide to go do day trips and explore nature, the Rain Forest is pretty cool. They have some trails that are not difficult. Also over on the peninsula (though I have never visited) is Sol Duc Hot Springs. They have a resort with day use of the pools. Might be nice after a hike, but they do charge admission.
Stay local though. Different trips (Oregon, Victoria, Vancouver, etc.) really do deserve their own dedicated time.

Oh the zoo. I loved the zoo there. Had the best time. I think because its such mild weather the animals were really active. And many of the animals have very well hidden fences/defenses ... sometimes too hidden, as I like to know they animals aren't actually going to come right on over... but the effect is that it feels much more like you are looking at the animals more in a natural space... ?
My sister took my mom to see a concert at the zoo last time she was out....

Yes, Woodland Park Zoo was one of the leaders in creating natural exhibits for the animals and has received multiple awards for their exhibits. One thing that I was disappointed in was that they closed the elephant exhibit and sent them elsewhere. It's still a great place to visit, and they also have a rose garden there.
ZooTunes was great. They have raised ticket prices quite a bit the last several years, but back in the day (15-20 years ago maybe) I saw groups like Spyro Gyra and Chuck Mangione for eight bucks!

Yeah, I'd keep Crater Lake on a completely separate trip. However, if you want a bit of a drive to a pretty location, Leavenworth is pretty cool-- it looks like a Bavarian Village and the shops have Christmas stuff all the time. It would be about a 2 1/2 hour drive.

I've taken my grandson on a Ride theDucks in another city. He enjoyed it immensly. But the Seattle one had a really bad accident (multiple fatalities) in September and only recently restarted operations.

I think that they have just started back up, but this company had a really big crash (they ran into another bus) last year and several died. It tied up traffic for hours and caused a huge mess. I know that they stopped running for awhile.

Love this idea. In the next couple years we want to do Mount Rushmore, yellowstone, etc trip. We have thought flying to a location and then renting a small RV to tour around.

Yep, I saw the "ride the ducks" when I was googling. I also remember the accident that happened....so sad. It is on the list to do, but not 100% sure if it will happen.

Go to the kite store near Pike Place Market before going to Gas Works Park.
There's a little cafe on the 2nd floor of Pike Place Market with great views of the water.
You must check out Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe. I'm sure your boys would love it. Be sure to look up and go all the way to the back of the store. It's really about 75% museum. You need passports to travel to Canada now. But, riding on the ferry is a wonderful experience even if you takes a short ride to Vashon Island and back. Going to the San Juan Islands is the best, though.
Get a picnic lunch and go to Ballard (Northwestern Seattle) to check out the ship Locks. It's fun to watch the ships and the fish going through the ladder.
If you have time after seeing Ballard, check out the troll under the Fremont bridge.
Boeing has several locations. The airplane manufacturing tour would be north of Seattle in Everett. The Red Barn and Museum of Flight are next to each other in Renton.
If you go south to Tacoma, go to see the glass made at the Chihuly Glass Works. You will need a car to visit Everett, Renton, Tacoma and would be best for Ballard too.
It's been several years since I've lived in Seattle so there may have been a few changes.

To clarify, the Museum of Glass is in Tacoma. You can see and meet artists at work in the Hot Shop, and even stream video from there during museum hours. There is a lot inside, but what may be the coolest program there is that they invite children to sketch anything in their imagination. They pick one every so often, and the team of artists then create what the child drew. One copy goes to the child and the second is on display. The part I liked best was outside the museum though, including the outdoor installations and the Bridge of Glass which is (I believe) all Chihuly works.
Chihuly Garden and Glass is the relatively new building and outdoor exhibit at Seattle Center.
Apparently. The Troll does indeed live under the bridge, but it's the Aurora Bridge. In Fremont, yes.

I wouldn't recommend Ride the Duck. Not to mention everyone tooting those annoying whistles.

I live in Oregon and ditto the CNP needs to be a seperate trip. Plus you could add in the Ashland Shakespeare festival- which is a hoot.
For Seattle though- I haven't read all the thread so I'm not sure if it's been mentioned but the Locks are interesting. DS could have stood there for hours and watched. Leavenworth is a few hours outside of seattle and that is too cute of a place. A trip over to Victoria, or the San Juans would be awesome too.
