Slow progress. I'm hoping to put away some money this month, but I have to pay for two trips. I booked one already, and I currently have enough cash to pay for it. I have another one next month that should cost about $1,500. -movinonup

the Marie Kondo method of decluttering. ... Nothing more comes into my house unless it is destined to give me joy. Wow!! I should do this but in reverse. Declutter everything that dn bring me joy. An awful lot will go. Maybe I'll even do a garage sale to bump up savings

I agree with Ombud. That's my style of thinking, too. I'll have to look into this Marie Kondo method and see if it's something that clicks with me.

As best I can tell, the Marie Kondo method is a decluttering method. Nothing stays in your house unless it brings you joy.
Good luck with it, and report back to us.

We got our state and federal tax returns! Whoo hoo!
Current Deposits = $4403.00 +$366.00 State Tax Return +$4246.00 Federal Tax Return +$8.00 Even Out Amount +$7.00 (Week 7 of 2016 Challenge) Total Deposits for 2016 = $9030.00
Wow now we are 3/4th to our goal! We def didn't expect to have such a giant tax return. This is our first year (well first 3 months really) with having rentals. We put money into them for repairs and upgrades and only had a few months of rental income, so that ended up giving us a big return.
Banker Gurl : 2/11/16 $9030 (1/1/16 $0, WIRS1) Goal - Contribute $12,000

Even with taking out $3300.00+ for property taxes we are still doing good! Next week I will need to take money out of savings to pay for a new garage door we had put on one of our rentals. In April we will be draining savings to pay off a loan, a land survey we had to have done on one of the rentals, and also for a MUCH needed vaca. And then we will be starting from scratch again...but as long as networth keeps going up, I guess that is what is important.
Account Name | Balance 1/1/16 | Balance 2/11/16
| Local Savings | $2630.00 | $2910.00
| GC Savings | $240.00 | $6245.00
| Cap 360 - Us | $3100.00 | $2160.00
| Cap 360 - Mom Payoff Savings | $4050.00 | $4135.00
| Cap 360 - Rental Deposit | $1250.00 | $1250.00
| 52 Week Challenge 2015 (Week 46) | $1081.00 | $1378.00
| 52 Week Challenge 2016 (Week 7 (+52))
| $0
| $80
| Totals
| $12,351.00
| $18,158.00
|
Mantra - Every penny counts!
Every time I add a tiny bit to savings or paying off debt I think "That is one less penny I will never pay again on my mortgage (or whatever you are working on)." Makes tossing a bit of change into your change jar or putting a $5 rebate against your loan feel really GOOD!

January was a wash for me. Unexpected car repair ate up what I had added to savings. My current balance is still right at $35,840.
Sent our taxes off to the accountant and typically receive about $1500 refund which is expected to go into savings.
Will also find out my bonus at the beg of March to be paid at the end of March - too time consuming to estimate what this might be, so many factors, none of which are the same for me from last year. Merit raises are also coming at the same time - probably 2% which will be net $60/check.
I found out that I passed my final actuarial exam in Jan. This resulted in a $1400 raise which is a net $40/paycheck.
As a final requirement for my FSA designation, I have to attend a conference at the beg of March. When I return to work, I am guaranteed a $5000 raise which will be net $135/paycheck. I am also expecting a promotion but really have no idea what to expect as a raise to go along with it. I also think that my title change will be enough to move me into a bigger bonus bucket for next year. Again, I'm not really sure what that bucket looks like.
As you can see March will be an exciting time in my house I've been working on exams off and on for 15 years so it's a long, long overdue payoff. I have doubled my salary over the past three years by passing exams and crossed into territory that I really never imagined. It's mind-blowing and I'm doing my best to stay rational about it. My husband will be travelling with me to Atlanta for the conference so we'll celebrate there and also go out for a nice dinner when we get back home.
Then, I'll do some budget re-evaluation. I intend to increase my 401k a bit and should be able to max out for the first time. I currently contribute 12% and the company kicks in 5%. With the higher salary my contributions and balances are really growing. It's not hard to see how the snowball effect will work over the next 30 years, but it is amazing.

I start my new job this Monday and just got my vacation payout from my old job (~$3,482). Paying my mortgage and sending $1,500 to savings.... I cannot wait to start contributing to a 401k again and see my net worth go up

Question ladies : I have now $7,500 in savings after the $1,500 transfer today.
I have been thinking since last night (because I think a lot) with April 15 approaching I could maybe:
- transfer let's say $3,000 into my wife and I Roth account to counts towards 2015 Contributions. That would still leave us at least $1,500 in there (maybe more by April) for any emergencies.
- once April 15 goes I can no longer contribute to 2015 contributions and I have till April 2017 to max out for 2016 contributions.
- maybe I will need to reduce my overall savings goals by 6k or 2016 ROTH by 6k (push it into next year) because 50k savings goals is already a big goal for us, 56k would be really pushing it.

TheHaitian, I would stretch to put money in the Roth for 2015, even if it means putting in the $1,500 you're saving for emergencies. I'm not up on the Roth rules, but can't you take out your own contributions (but not earnings) at any time without any penalty? People talk about using their Roths as their EF. You might check.

Seriousthistime, $970, 2/12/2016 (Goal $8,148)Just turtling along at this point. I didn't make any deposits other than the usual planned deposits from every paycheck. My airline ticket is paid for, and now I have a room deposit on my CC. Next paycheck I'll take money out of travel to pay that off. I need to get busy selling some of my furniture and household items to beef up the moving fund. I have a list of pieces to take pictures of and get them to the furniture consignment shop which would require the upfront expense of hiring someone to help me get them there. Looking forward to getting rid of the pieces that resulted from marital compromises or flat-out nonconsensual purchases that I ended up with after the divorce, with the extra benefit of beefing up the moving fund.

Just some little snowflakes into savings. Working on major decluttering of our clothes right now and hoping that will also bring in a little bit of cash, but if not just the piece of mind of my clothes fitting in the closet again will be worth it!
Current Deposits = $9030.00 +$25.00 My Payday to Our Savings +$25.00 My Payday to Mom Loan Savings +$6.75 FB Sales +$12.00 Bball Money (2 games) +$1.25 Even Out Amount Total Deposits for 2016 = $9100.00
Excited to be closing in on $10K!

I would move as much to the Roth as you can. It can serve double duty as an emergency fund, just put it in something safe like a money market fund. It will preserve your 2015 space and if you need it, you can take out your contribution amount without any penalties.

One thing is for sure....life is full of changes!! So best laid plans means changing my savings goals again. Have the opportunity to go hiking in the Grand Canyon in June with a group.....not sure exact amount that I will need but going to make it $500 as a goal. So changed my savings goals to add a line item for it and transferred my savings for my Summer vacation to it since I have longer to save for the summer vacation. Ultimately, same amount saved just have another . Update on FPU - Been to 2 classes of the Financial Peace University now.....forcing me to look at everything and re-evaluate. Also, as a single person, you are to choose an accountability partner to go over your budget with....doing that with the boyfriend.....he is pushing me as well....asking tough questions. It has been good for both of us...also, no secrets as far as finances go. We are looking at long term goals and retirement too. Nice to have someone to talk to about it. FYI....might mean some adjusting of goals....again. Great job with savings everyone!! Teachermom

I loved FPU! I was an accountability partner for an older retired woman in the group too. I've been thinking about going through again, but at this point I could probably teach the class I've been living it for so many years.

minnesotapaintlady I am really enjoying the class.....I think the best part for me is having the conversations with my boyfriend. My ex and I didn't discuss finances or anything. I paid bills and he spent money.....not caring if it was in the budget etc. Very much a "free spirit" and that caused lots of issues for us. My boyfriend and I are both "nerds" with different areas of importance....some things he is really laid back about and others I am....so we balance each other. However, the budgeting thing has become obsessive....we have both adjusted and readjusted many times and I am sure we will continue to over and over to get it right. Also, we don't live together so all money is separate. Teachermom

My ex and I had TONS of problems in our marriage, but finances weren't one. Mainly because he just let me handle everything, but he agreed to go to FPU with me and I think even him, "Mr VERY Free Spirit" enjoyed it and got something out of it. Even now after our divorce and all his problems he's been staying away from debt and trying to save up for a house, so some of it stuck.
