so this wasn't an explicit goal for this thread, but it still was one that I've had in the back of my head for 2016 (as quickly as possible) - with today's paycheck, I put $1000 back into my high-yield savings account. that account's balance has been all of $11 for awhile now, and it's one of the things that has made me twitch. I won't be making as big of a dent in the debt payoff for my next WIRR update, but I feel amazing about being able to put that $1000 back into the savings account. woo hoo!!

I emptied out my change jar and took it to the bank to be counted and deposited ($40+). Then I came home and put the jar back in its place, only to find a smaller change jar next to it, filled with lots of quarters. That will wait until the next time I'm at the bank (and as I walked into the bank I saw a couple of Lion's Club boxes for people to deposit used eyeglasses, which is good because I came across a pair to donate). I also sold a few things on eBay, and have a few more items listed that will end today, so I'm waiting to see what I've got in PayPal after that. I also have some money in ibotta that I can transfer into PayPal, but I am also grocery shopping today so I might as well wait until after that's done. I'm trying to decide if it should go toward my debt race or into the moving fund. I got a $25 rebate in the mail, which I used to make my first deposit into weekly savings ($53 every two weeks + $25). Travel savings begin next paycheck. Is it bad that I already have two trips planned and we're only half done with January?

I collected some furniture over the summer to refinish and sell....all bought for $5 to $20 depending on the piece. Worked on one this weekend revamping it and sanding, etc. Now just need to paint and will have my first piece done. I am into it about $30 total....paint, casters (wheels), antiquing color, some screws, and wood scraps. Should be able to sell for $150 or so. Really need to get to work listing things on FB too....have lots of clothes still and just stuff from around the house that isn't being used. My family (mom and sister) really want to go to Hawaii for Christmas next year. Spoke with BF about it and we decided that if we can save the money from "new" ventures like things around the house, etc....we will go....so he is on board as well. We both have too much around the house and should have no trouble coming up with the money. (I totally wouldn't go but my mom is getting dementia/Alzheimers and this may be the last opportunity we have....she is 73). Going to up my saving goal by $2000 when I have chance I will post it. Also, BF has a time share.....will cost $50 to swap for a place in Hawaii....so just need money to fly (4 of us....he has 2 teenage kids), food, entertainment....although we will spend lots of time at the beach, hiking, etc. Checked tickets and they are about $500 each person. BF has a goal of $3000 on top of this. Teachermom

Friday was payday for me, so had my normal payday deposits. MO won $150.00 in Fantasy Football, but $50 of it had to go to a different Fantasy Football league that he lost...lol. So $100 there to add to savings. Had a great week last week for FB sales, $244! That is split with my Mom, so I put my $120 in savings as well.
MO and I both are in a football pool for the playoffs where you get paid based on what the score is for the playoff games. We picked up our boards for this Sunday night and MO has already won $90! We won't get the money till after the Super Bowl, but that was exciting and hopefully we will win more by then!
We have a lot of major bills coming up (paying for new garage door for Rental #2, property taxes for Rental #1 and Rental #2) so will be having huge drops in savings, but at least we can see that we are regularly making deposits, and not taking money out for unneeded expenses or overspending.
Current Deposits $1000.00 +$25.00 My Payday to Our Savings +$25.00 My Payday to Mom Loan Savings +$100.00 Football Win +$120.00 FB Sales Total Deposits for 2016 = $1270.00

I haven't tried the weekly challenge but really like that idea....question though.....I am only paid 1x per month so not as easy for me as I have to cross off 4 weeks at a time.....anyone else do it that is paid monthly?

Teachermom, I don't do it weekly because I'm paid every two weeks. Last year I took the first week ($1) plus last week ($52) and deposited $53 with the first paycheck. The next paycheck I took second week ($2) plus the second-to-last week ($51). Since every two weeks was $53, that's how much I put into savings each paycheck.
With monthly paydays, it could be a bit trickier, but really not impossible. Have a look at forwardwego's posts. She lists out all the weeks from 1 to 52, and each paycheck she crosses off one of the weeks and deposits that amount, not necessarily in order from 1 to 52. If you were to cross off 4 weeks at once using her technique, you could pick off two lower amounts and two higher amounts. Every third month you'd have to cross off an extra week though, so maybe save the smallest weeks to cross off during that month. Of course, you could also go in order and in January deposit $1, $2, $3, and $4, and so on.

Movinonup.....what is your monthly challenge? I see you are doing weekly and daily as well....how did you come up with the amount?? Teachermom All I do is move the decimal. Daily challenge - Start at $0.01 on January 1. Add one cent each day repeat for 365 or 366 days each year. ($0.02 on January 2, $0.03 on January 3, etc. until $3.66 on Decembr 31 this year.) Weekly Challenge - Start at $1 January 1. Add $1 each week for 52 weeks (or 53 if you feel like it). Monthly Challenge - Start at $10 for January. Add $10 each month for 12 months. I just keep a list of how much I need to save, and when I transfer money into my account, I start picking off the largest amounts that I can. So if I deposit $85.80 into my account on January 1, I will check off $80 for August, $5 for week #5 and $0.80 for day #80. This just gives me an artificial goal to save more money without determining a specific anticipated expense. Essentially I am too lazy to come up with a reason to save. -movinonup

Today was my 2nd payday of the month and I've made my transfers. It's been a pretty decent month overall. Modest progress has been made in the never-ending divorce. I finally signed the lease on my new place!!!! And work has picked back up. My paycheck today was only a little short of normal, which is a big relief. I've have a decent savings account currently--not a truly funded EF, but cash on hand to get me through this phase of things. I have been/will be making purchases for the new house (well, actually a duplex, but I didn't take all that much from the marital home so there is much to replace), and my van is getting in dire need of a tune up, all of which means it is shrinking. So, overall my EF is in better shape than it appears from my numbers listed. Thank goodness!

I visited son and his family last weekend and I've already blown through $327. I plan on going back to Nebraska for the dedication of the new Omaha National Cemetery that will be sometime this spring, another trip there in July, and with luck one in October to interr his ashes after the cemetery is open.
Poof, travel money gone. If I can manage it, I will throw some additional money into that account.

Good Morning WIR Savers I love waking up to read what the WIRs in the western time zones have posted after I went to bed. Today starts my 3-day weekend that happens once every 6 weeks ... I'm hoping to post some well-deserved mid-month shouts. (Plus I need to build that skill. Seriousthistime is very good at not only encouraging, but also asking questions to draw us out and getting us thinking and moving. I want to build up to that too.)

Just a few practice shout outs: Teachermom Lovely update with 60% on your minor EF and 100% roses earned for insurance deductible, car maintenance, and the spring break trip. When you have your plans laid out and a windfall shows up, good things happen. Could you have imagined a year or 2 ago that you would be achieving these savings, even working toward a special memory making trip to Hawaii with your mom??
Blonde Granny Good for you having the ability to travel modestly enough on a budget to manage 3 trips on that budget. Please keep us informed on your trips and travel budget. Maybe you could share with us what some of your best travel cost-saving strategies are?
Gracendignity One month into 2016 you are right on pace for your annual goals...a very nice start. It's good that there's been progress in the seemingly never-ending divorce. Cheers for the new digs and nearly normal paychecks. Since you are new to the savers thread....did your "lurk" for awhile, or did you find it and jump right in? I like your screen name. How did you decide on it?
To ALL the savers, AND ALL watchers What is your best benefit of participating in the savers' thread

I have lurked on these boards since the MSN Money days. I just never did register until this past summer and still never made a post until this month. I introduced myself on the appropriate thread and got a nice welcome. (I knew that I would.)
My screen name of GraceNDignity was chosen because it has been my mantra this past year as I've been going through a long, drawn-out divorce. Even though to move out and file for divorce was my decision, I will say this has been the hardest year of my life ever, mostly because of the lack of respect on the DH's part in ending this marriage that was good for many years. I have had several Southern woman hissy fits about him this year and I have to remind myself of my mantra more times than one. I've joked to my daughters that I need to get a couple of cats and name them Grace and Dignity. LOL!

I have no idea if my goal of only spending $1K for 3 more trips is doable or not. I drive, know the places that are the least expensive for gasoline (don't buy it in Nebraska). Even if I spend more, it won't break the bank.
I will definitely go for the National Cemetery dedication, regardless of costs, and if my time frame actually works, I will be going back in October, and the cemetery should/might be finally open. I would like to inter DHs ashes on our anniversary of Oct. 24. I will also make that trip with no thoughts of cost. I will likely buy some new clothes for each event also, that's just something I do.
I will however keep track of the costs for these trips so if need be, I can add money to my budget in 2017.

2016 Goals and update! scrgrl47 1/24/16 $2,137 (Goal: $43,050)
2016 goals: - Throw all "extra" at the LT savings fund. All funds are on auto-save but I won't meet the LT savings goal with only that, so I need to throw my bonus and anything else there.

I think for now I'm going to just start the year with a $1000 goal for the emergency fund, to replenish what I pilfered from it in December. I may add other goals, but this'll get me started.

MO got paid on Friday so added $25 to savings from that. I also went to 2 of his bball games last week and since I have a pass for admission, I add $6 to savings every time I go to a game.
We did our taxes this weekend, looks like we will be getting back about $4500! We were very nervous about the taxes with all of our life changes this year (getting married, 3 handpays at the casino, bought new house, became landlords to 2 houses). Since we had home improvement expenses on the rentals and didn't have renters in for the whole year we are getting a lot back. Next year will be different I am sure! Normally I always put all of our tax return into savings, this year it may go into savings for just a short time before we have to pay bills. We are just waiting for one more W2 and then we can file, so hopefully this week they will be filed and done with.
Current Deposits $1270.00 +$25.00 MO Payday to Our Savings +$12.00 Bball Savings +$34.00 FB Sales +$4.00 Even Out Amount +$7.00 (Week 3 + 4 of 2016 Challenge) Total Deposits for 2016 = $1352.00
Banker Gurl : 1/1/16 $1352.00 (1/1/16 $0, WIRS1) Goal - Contribute $12,000

Wow!! Seems to be the month of $$$ for me.....people who have owed me just want to pay finally.....I never loan expecting it back so it is a bonus!! Also, haven't spent all my "cash" for the month (food and gas money).....so will have an update probably Friday as that is payday. I know this pace won't continue but nice to be able to save a chunk this month!! On another note....got my W2 from work....waiting on 1 more thing and can do taxes.....normally I see a return which will be heading to savings as well. Teachermom

I transferred money into savings today and came over here to report it, and then realized I hadn't joined the thread yet this year. After the complication of last year, I am going simple on the savings this year. The goal is to save $6,000 for the year for family stuff and $1,250 for the year for Pop Tart's Launch Fund. We do have a number of vacations planned this year - DisneyWorld in Feb, MT in April, NV in July - and so on those months, I may not transfer money to savings, but instead I'll pull $500 less out of savings to cover expenses, and that will count.
shanendoah: 1/27/16 $650 (Goal: $7,250)
| Current | Goal | % | Launch Fund | $150 | $1,250 | 12.0% | Family Savings | $500 | $6,000 | 8.3% | Total | $650 | $7,250 | 9.0% |

Yesterday my DD needed a new car (8k to repair a 4k car) so back into LT savings .... then a like amt to DS to keep it even so I told them a family vacation may be out of reach. He did nothing but took that news hard. Thinking maybe just whitewater camping trip or Tahoe. Last year was hard and it spilled over into this year OTOH I should have a good update to WIRS & WIRR tomorrow, but that involves a different account & current income
