Wasn't it a few years ago when Hanukkah was around thanksgiving? DH's rabbi was so happy about it because he felt that Hanukkah was not being celebrated correctly being too close to Christmas.
Yes. I forget if it fell over Thanksgiving weekend in 2013 0r 2014. WAAAAY too much family time in WAAAY too short a time period.

Happy holidays was an attempt to included Xmas for everyone The 'War on Christmas' was created by Fox News. Just like the Christian Oppression meme- meanwhile there is a church on every corner in this country......... I really feel for people that are going to go through this holiday full of hate. Going to stick it through New Year- but I think politics is a part of my life I have to let go- it is poison. I can't recall it ever being this bad. Probably because you haven't lived long enough. I've read books about politicians during the Civil War, and even closer to modern times, that would make today's policial turmoil seem like nothing. Really, modern political culture is mostly petty bickering about bullshit...the problem is we have 24 hour news stations and the internet that keeps the petty bickering going non stop. Technically, all of us on the internet are continuing the same arguments that started around 1993 - they've just jumped from one message board to another for the past 20+ years ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png)

Happy Holidays used to be something you'd say instead of Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Its just been repurposed to include non Christian holidays and for some folks, that ticks them off.
I posted the OP because it was the worst and funniest example I've seen on that website of customers going crazy over Merry Christmas or perceived non Christians. The crazy customers get more press than the cool ones. Kind of like politicians.

Well, there's a huge push back for Merry Christmas. Why would I say "Merry Christmas"? I'm surrounded by Jews, Muslims, atheists, Buddhists and Hindus. Happy Holidays includes everyone.

That's your problem not mine. Actually that's her blessing not yours. I suspect the Jews, Muslims, atheists, Buddhists and Hindus feel blessed by that too.

If DH was mature enough not to get his panties in a wad when wished a merry Christmas then too bad so sad for anyone else.

Look at the recruitment video I found. They are even using the children. Dressing them up in the anti-Christmas uniform of white turtle necks and sweaters. Please listen carefully and you will hear that it is not only anti-Christmas but it is anti-heterosexual (they announce that "everyone is gay").
Brothers? Yeah Brothers in Arms.

The part you don't get is that no one gets offended by someone saying merry Christmas. They get offended by the shit fit about the idea that someone said someone might get offended by it. Just say merry Christmas already and save the fight for when someone objects. Oh you can't do that cause no one objects.

Actually most things you derogatorily refer to as pc are just plain manners. The hypocrisy of your fits when people are not considerate enough of you is a constant source of amusement.

I won't say I'm "offended" by someone wishing me a Merry Christmas, but it's very assumptive on their part. I'm agnostic, for one. And I don't celebrate the holidays for the most part for another. I prefer to hear happy holidays if you're gonna ram it down my throat, though I'll respond with the same polite "same to you" either way.
And, if I remember to say something to at all to the clerk at the grocery store or wherever, I'm going to say happy holidays - not merry Christmas.

So I will add my two cents. I am perfectly fine with someone wishing me "Happy Holidays." Doesn't bother me one darn bit. As for my greeting to others during the holiday season? It's automatically Merry Christmas. It's like breathing. I was born and raised Catholic. What can I say. If I know my audience, I will say Happy Holidays. Or I just offer a friendly smile and offer them a Happy New Year. You cannot go wrong with Happy New Year.

That's your problem not mine. Problem? Why is it a problem? I feel sad for you. I say / respond Happy Holidays or Happy Hannukah and it is regrettable if it offends someone. What ever happened to good will towards all? And with that: Happy Holidays all!

Most of what I see of 'being told not to say Merry Christmas' is blown out of proportion or completely fabricated. www.afa.net/action-alerts/company-orders-you-can-t-say-merry-christmas-to-our-customers/
"The woman who cut my hair told me the employees had been instructed to refrain from "religious" greetings such as "Merry Christmas" and "God bless you." I asked her if it was a corporate decision and she said they had been instructed by the district manager on such greetings."
My aunt is also a gift wrapper at our local mall every year, and four years ago management stated they could not wish anyone a Merry Christmas after wrapping their gifts. The mall also stopped using any wrapping paper that had the word Christmas on it (they always had red paper with white "Merry Christmas" lettering on it). When they started receiving hundreds of complaints about the missing wrapping paper (and dozens of complaints about the employees not being allowed to say the greeting), mall management started supplying the wrapping paper again. But, they still don't allow the greeting even now.
I got some gossip from my aunt yesterday, too: One lady was fired for refusing to obey the Merry Christmas ban this year...this was an older lady that had been wrapping gifts at that mall for like two decades and got sick of not being able to say it. As far as she knew, no one complained about her saying it, but management found out and dismissed her. We're waiting to see if there is any blowback from this, as this lady was quite well-known and quite well-liked by local residents.

Again, those examples aren't about oppression either. These people weren't being stopped from saying Mery Christmas in their private lives or in a public forum. If an employer wants to make rules regarding employee behavior at work based on what they feel is most inclusive to their clientele, that is their perogative, one they exercise in many ways. It is always the choice of the employed to abide by employer rules or seek other employment.
Even so, I generally read the glaring headlines of 'forbidden to say MC'... And reading further find it was either a recommendation to say HH instead, or in the case of your link, one employee claiming one district manager gave faulty instructions... Hardly a wide soread issue, and generally much blown out of proportion...
