First pt job I had was substitute teaching. When I had 10 days in, I declined assignments for the rest of the month. Did that for about 3 years.
Then I worked as a cashier for a nursery. Loved the people and plants. Worked 3 days/week. Did that for a year.
Then I became a caregiver for an agency. Did that for about a year, then was offered a job as admn asst in the office. It was full time, but they agreed to let me share tbe job with another woman. That worked very well for several years until DH and I moved a distance away.
A few months after I quit, my old boss called and offered me the job of being dispatcher after hours. He wanted someone who knew tbe care givers and the clients, not an ansering service. I worked from home, so no commuting or work dressing. I did that a couple of years until DH retired.
I still get together with the woman I job shared with.

Heck! Give it a try and see what happens. I've been told no a LOT. I've been told yes a few times as well. It all comes out in the wash. You don't know til you ask.
If you're set on a job in the school district, why don't you start by being a substitute teacher? You can see how you like it at school, and if you show up and do a good job, they will notice and remember if you decide you'd like something more permanent. It may turn out this isn't at all what you want to do.
As far as your self esteem issue, I found out a long time ago that life is easier now that I don't give a crap what other people think of me. I try very hard to treat people well, and as long as I haven't mistreated them, what they think of me has no bearing on my life.
