Very thoughtful, generous and creative!
It having ties sounds good. As suggested by Dannylion, a shoulder strap or carrying handle would probably be very practical to have.
Would making an end "pocket" in almost full width, with the opening towards the middle, the opening somewhat narrower than the width of the pocket, be useful? That would be a kind of pillow (double thickness) and possibly a place to put something in while sleeping that would then not roll off the mattress easily and get lost, and which would also be under the head, making it more difficult to steal?

If you add the end pocket, you wouldn't need to add the ties because it could all be stuffed into its own pocket. Better than separate ties since there would be fewer things to fall off or keep track of. Plus ties are going to be the smallest and weakest part.

How inspiring! Does it really take 1,000 bags? If it takes that many, I don't have enough bags to even start this year, but I will start saving for next year. I am so impressed, Sam!

Mine take about 600-700 because I use the whole bag and don't cut it up to make traditional plarn, which makes a lot of waste. But I am on my 3rd one now! I've been raiding the recycle bins at the stores and returning what I cant use

Lol, DH laid on it and now he wants one. He said if it wasn't so noisy, he would ask me to make a mattress topper for our bed. Hahaha! I am going to make one for the kids' bathroom to kneel on when I do baths for them though. Maybe I will make A one shaped like a cat bed, since she currently insists she is not a human but rather a feline.

I just got asked to meet with a local girl scout troop this weekend to teach them how to make the mats The place where I donated the second mat loves it and wants me to show the kids how to make them. This is exactly what I had hoped for - to make a process that didn't take much skill but still resulted in a sturdy mat. Now I am nervous about going to show them!! But so very excited. I better raid the store recycle bins before I head out there Working on mat #3 now and I finally ran out of bags.

My SIL has been working with some homeless in San Antonio, and she said paracord is in high demand. So she's working out a carry strap that could be attached to this, and then removed to use for something else if needed. I wonder if some kind of bungee or carabiner clip would work too? And help attach multiple things.

Or what if it was rolled up inside-out, then maybe keep a couple things in the pocket?

your Dh wants one now, too?! Teach him how to make one, then you both can do it together...think of how many more his help would allow for! And if A wants to be a feline, hers a feline mama...lol! Me loves my 2 felines, wish I could have more..
Very cool that the girl scout troops would like to learn how to make them! Your wish has been granted!
If you're on your 3rd one, you shouldn't be nervous about teaching them, I'm sure you're a PRO at this by now...hurry and go get more bags!!
Congrats!

Thanks for the video Sam! I am going to try to make one of these! One question, how do you tie it off when almost done?

I tuck the ends in and then melt a little bit with a lighter to secure. But just weaving in the ends would work too. It wont unravel easily.

Thank you for walking the walk and for showing us that it doesn't take a lot of money to do so -- just some of our time and the desire to follow through. Sam, you are an amazing woman! I don't know how you do all that you do working full time, raising a family, involved in your church, and probably another 100 things that are awesome and now this.
I use our plastic bags to scoop cat shit. But in my defense I have no talent whatsoever so maybe it's best. People would freeze to death if I made something.

I forwarded this to a lot of people in helping areas. These would be good for day care sleep mats, camping, picnic blanket. Tons of uses.
I don't know if I could stand saving up 700 bags. I reuse the newspaper bags to cover the paper towel on water bottle to prevent sweating. Put shampoo bottles in to prevent undesirable leaks.

I will attempt to save up that many bags. Hopefully, this thread hasn't totally disappeared by that time.

It takes about 8 hours of braiding to make a mat. It would have taken me at least five times as long to crochet, and that's not factoring in the time to cut all the plarn. Or dealing with all the scraps that makes (it's a mess!).

Can't the homeless weave their own plastic bag mats? I mean they got nothing but time...
