I have crocheted with plastic bags before and always wanted to do a sleeping mat to donate to the homeless. But it would take me months to crochet one, and it really takes a toll on my hands. I also have friends that dont crochet who wanted to help. I spent the weekend figuring out a weaving technique that would work. And I ended up making 2 mats just this weekend! Both have been donated, and I just got a picture of the first recipient with his new mat. Talk about perspective. I took this pile of trash: And wove it into this mat: And now this guy has a weather resistant cushioned surface to sleep on. Something that weighs very little so he can easily carry it with him. ♡♡♡♡♡♡

Could you share the instructions, please? My DH took video of me making the mats and we hope to have it edited soon. I will share the link here if you want It's basically braided like a rag rug. I join the bags together using slip knots. And I use the whole bag. Other ways of making "plarn" only use strips and still leave a lot of waste from the handles, seams, and bags that have holes in them. I am able to use all of those!

Impressive! And what a nice thing to do. Also, I love the little feet in the background of the second picture!

It rolls up quite tidily for transport. I can see how the very lightweight materials would be a real boon. I can't tell from the picture of it with its new owner, but does it have a loop for carrying? An extra loop that could be turned into a shoulder or cross-body strap might be useful.
This is such a great idea. Such a simple item that probably has a significant impact.

I just used some extra bags as ties to hold it together. But I bet a strap would be super helpful! I should add that on to the next one.
My kids really liked helping. I couldn't keep them off of the darn thing Al was upset that she didn't get to keep it. LOL!

I can honestly say that has never been on my bucket list. How on earth would you even think of such a thing?

Thank you for walking the walk and for showing us that it doesn't take a lot of money to do so -- just some of our time and the desire to follow through.

That is very cool, indeed. I could actually see why your little one liked it, since it is cushy and soft. And for little kids in general, it can protect floors and rugs, since it offers tinkle-resistant qualities?
