I saw the ad this morning. You have to indeed wonder, given all the coverage of date rape, domestic violence in sports and sexual assault on campus, what the retailer's ad people were spiking their own drinks with when they came up with that piece of douche doodoo.

The worst part is I think this is the second year in a row they've had an ad of this nature.

You can't fix stupid. (Of course, we don't have to shop there, either...)

I don't ever shop at Bloomingdales. Not because of this ad, but because there isn't one around me.
However, I don't think they should be boycotted, I don't care if anyone gets fired, I'm not all up in arms about it. But I do have to wonder WTF the ad execs were thinking.

I'm beginning to think some of this un-PC and directly offensive stuff is intentional. I mean, see? The ad is getting attention. Not positive, but it is still getting the store name out there into the minds of many. If you run a regular old boring ad no one notices. Perhaps I'm just cynical. Well, yes, I know that I am. Just my $0.02.

We have to hit them where it hurts to make them realize that this is NOT the kind of attention they (or their shareholders) want.

Maybe Bloomingdales needs a quota for women in their marketing department.

I just tend to think sometimes all they care about is getting attention. For example the Starbucks Christmas cup debacle. I wouldn't have even noticed the difference had it not been brought up but it sure put their name all over the news for the past week (or however long it's been). Target is selling a Christmas sweater with "OCD" across the front (how that relates to Christmas is beyond me) and it's causing outrage. Subconsciously, the names of these stores will pop into people's minds when Christmas shopping (or so the are hoping, I guess).

Yeah, normally I don't get too excited over stuff like this, but this'd is pretty bad. It's pretty hard to see anything but rape in it.
What does it even have to do with Bloomindales?

To be fair to Starbucks, I don't think they necessarily expected to be accused of hating Jesus because they took Merry Christmas off their cups but I could be wrong. Either way it is completely ridiculous! It is a cup! Who gives a crap! I have noticed the term OCD being overused lately. I hear people randomly saying I am OCD. Uh, no, no you're not... I am beginning to think it is supposedly cool to say you are OCD. Any little thing that someone does differently or if a off center picture bothers them then suddenly they are referring to themselves as OCD. My niece has OCD and went through quite a bit of therapy. She is much better now and learning to live with some things but I know what OCD looks like and it isn't pretty. When my co-worker is sitting in an office that is in complete disarray and notices a picture is off center and starts referring to herself as OCD I just roll my eyes. That being said, I don't really care about some Christmas sweater with OCD on it. I just find it interesting that the last 3-4 people I have heard call themselves OCD don't seem to have a clue.

I didn't get that one either and personally I prefer the term anal retentive. Most people don't know what OCD really means. <<washes hands for the 10th time after locking and relocking the front door for the 12th time>>

Not really arguing with you - just pointing out the vagaries of language/slang... In the past, I'd hear (and even say) things about having a "senior moment" or having "early onset Alzheimer's" or having "Alzheimer's" when having forgotten something... there wasn't any maliciousness - it was just an 'ear worm' kinda slang for "I forgot". Until, it was said around someone actually dealing with a loved one with Alzheimer's.
it's just like having a "Blonde moment" or "being blonde" - it's tacky but it sometimes gets said - in reference to "having been stupid" or "not understanding something". Language unfortunately is like that.
The whole 'OCD' and "ADD" or 'ADHD" used in a slang sort of way has been popular for atleast a dozen or more years...
I'm not defending it - just attempting an explanation for why "OCD" might show up in pop culture with the intent that it's a "joke" or a cute play on words or whatever.
Just saw an episode of Sanford and Son and Fred Sanford is forever having the Big One- clutching his chest and anticipating a heart attack... All kinda in the same vein... doesn't make it right, but it is pervasive.

And yet Chirstians have no problem with the Pagan Goddess prominently displayed on the cup. It boggles my mind.

Who is the pagan goddess? I thought it was a mermaid. What a mermaid has to do with coffee I'm not sure, but not sure what a pagan goddess has to do with coffee either.

Let’s go all the way back to 1971, to when Starbucks was first coming to be. In a search for a way to capture the seafaring history of coffee and Seattle’s strong seaport roots, there was a lot of poring over old marine books going on. Suddenly, there she was: a 16th century Norse woodcut of a twin-tailed mermaid, or Siren. There was something about her – a seductive mystery mixed with a nautical theme that was exactly what the founders were looking for. A logo was designed around her, and our long relationship with the Siren began.

Oh, the whole "I just have to keep my house clean, I'm so OCD. giggle giggle" shit pisses me off. Until you've gotten up in the middle of the night to touch your stove, oven, and front door, or make sure you check the faucets, toilet, outlets, windows, and stove every single time you leave (even if you haven't used those things), then give me a call. Even so, I found Target's OCD sweater funny because obsessive Christmas disorder is a thing! Lol. I grew up with extended Christmas. The Bloomingdale's thing made my skin ceawl. Like seriously who the fuck thought of that? I do shop at Bloomies, so seriously, who thought that was a good advertisement!

They may have been thinking of it more in a "harmless prank" way. As in: wouldn't it be funny to spike her drink with alcohol and watch her be a goofball at the Christmas party? That's the only thing I can think of. I definitely don't think they intended the meaning "spike her drink and then have sex with her", although I agree they should have realized this would be how most people interpreted the ad.

I think they were after the attention and knew this would get them lots of it. I wish I shopped there so I could boycott them. The best I can do is not talk about it or them.

I am keeping it to a minimum and I'm talking about encouraging people not to give them big publicity.

Well, you know, maybe women aren't the target audience for that particular ad... Maybe Bloomies is trying to appeal to guys (who think such references are 'clever'). Bloomingdales does sell men's stuff after all.
