Ore-Ida has frozen boiled potatoes in a bag. You pop it in the microwave and mash once they're heated. LOL!! Ok Not Martha Stewart! I'm guessing when I need 20 pounds or more, that might be prohibitively expensive! I'm not one to pooh-pooh anything till I've given it a try. The worst they could do would be fire me!
That's a shit load of potatoes.

It surely is, Archie. I feed a shit load of people. And these people like their mashed taters. There is always some left over and people take home left-overs. My worst fear in the whole meal thing is running out of food. I'd rather have too much and since it always gets eaten later, it's ok. I don't care for reheated mashed potatoes but my sister makes something fried out of them the next day - some sort of potato pancake or something. I just know it has a bunch of onions in it and I don't care for them.

Dh often peels the potatoes on the evening before the guests are coming and lets them stand in water in a cool place over night. Then I change the water and cook them the following morning.

I'm taking note of these potato shortcuts. I'm still undecided about which starch to have (mac & cheese or Paula Deen mashed potatoes)... leaning toward the potatoes. X's family used to make them so I haven't had them in a really long time.

Don't the potatoes start to turn brown cut up that much ahead of time? No, we do that too for my grandma. Peel and cut into a large pan of cold water, cover and then set out in the cold garage over night, ready to go the next day.

No, I mean I literally used Martha Stewart 5-star recipes for Thanksgiving and while it was all very pretty and very nice, it was a lot more effort and a lot more expensive. With some shortcuts, I can get a green bean casserole, broccoli casserole, stuffed turkey, extra dish of stuffing on the side, mashed potatoes, gravy, watergate salad, yeast rolls, cranberry sauce and pies done and only spend 2 hours tops (not even at all once) in the kitchen. If people want beets, sweat potatoes or anything with coconut, they have to bring it. I took macronni and cheese off the menu a few years ago because I was making it with 7-cheeses, it cost a fortune and I really hate grading cheese. Plus, it's super fattening. What is watergate salad?

I am so glad I live out of state and no longer have to deal with this. When we lived in the same state, it was a fight every year because my mom thought she automatically got all holidays with us. One year I hosted, but then Goose's SIL gave me a list of requirements (only organic free range turkey, no deli meat trays, and a few other I can't remember right now). She also tried to dictate our schedule for the day and I put my foot down and told her what the schedule was and she was free to come or not.
Now I live out of state and I don't have to fight with anyone. While in Italy, I would cook a big meal and take it to the wine bar. Now that we are back in the states, I will just cook a meal for my kids and husband.

No you wouldn't be able to get 20 lbs out of those bags. I am not sure how much is in a bag but could probably cut down on prep work depending on how many bags you bought. You can peel the potatoes the day before, store them in water in the cold covered. I changed out the water before I cooked them though. One advantage was that we had a very cold garage that was a really big refrigerator! But a problem with making a lot if mashed potatoes is that you need to do them in a couple batches. I discovered this the last one I cooked. It is hard to mash this amount of potatoes in one pot. If you have only 4 burners on the stove, this becomes a pain in the butt. I was moving things on and off burners the last hour, to try to finish things up. I had potatoes cooking on 2 burners, gravy on one and was sautéing Brussels sprouts in 2 pans.

![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/rofl.gif) ODS just texted me out of the blue from 400 miles away asking if we are staying home for Thanksgiving. He already feels the pull. Not sure if that is a good thing or not. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/undecided.png)

What is watergate salad? You might know it as pistachio salad. Stir together pistachio pudding mix, cool whip, drained crushed pineapples, drained fruit cocktail and marshmallows. Some people add coconut, but I don't like coconut in anything. It's green cool whip with fruit and marshmallows when you're all done.

I bet it would be really good with a different flavored pudding. I'm not big on pistachios. I wonder what would happen if you used kool-aid or banana pudding mix. I may have to experiment.

I like making mashed potatoes by baking rather than boiling the potatoes. They end up having a much deeper potato flavor.

Well, a couple of things have since occurred. I had a business trip and without my prodding, DH responded to his family telling them to drop the conversation. His message was basically that each family has their own traditions and as our families grow, things will have to change. Someone continued to harp that they spend thousands traveling to and from the state to visit family, particularly our kids and that we should make the time for them. He reiterated that we will find time during their visit (which is 14 days long) to see the kids. In all likelihood, we will see them about 6X during that period. I appreciate that DH responded and while I don't want to split hairs, he really didn't defend me or call out their bullshit in the conversation. I personally feel like that is what needs to happen in order for these "discussions" (aka demands) to stop. At this point I'll take what I can get.
DS1 has also continually called out MIL and SIL (without my influence or encouragement) telling them how upset he is that everyone isn't coming to his house on the holiday. They have tried to be cute and tell him to come to their holiday party, to which he's replied, no, I don't want to leave my house on thanksgiving. I glad DH has watched this happen a few times because he can see first hand that DS doesn't want to go and that the tradition has become important to him. Next year, I think I'll plan a family vacation over the holiday weekend just for the four of us.

My SO calls it Midwest salad, and you really do need to use cool whip instead of home made whipped cream to get it to taste right.

MM, marvelous that your DH has grown a spine! I think he did quite well.
Kill'em with sugar and syrup; they will probably not stand for a straight-on (counter-)attack but be passive-aggressive and try to the fault on you and your family.
But if you and your DH are sweet bordering on slimy, they will not be able to accuse you of anything, except perhaps "faulty" planning and stubbornness, since you insist on having your Thanksgiving celebration on Thanksgiving...
As for going away, I would quite passive-aggressively suggest that you celebrate the next Thanksgiving at home (as to not miss out on your family and to "stake your claim"), but leave for vacation during one of "their" "ordinary" holidays. (Some people claim that I have got a dog gene somewhere. Oh well.)

Dh has gluten and dairy issues which make it easier for us to stay home on Thanksgiving. Butter on the bird? Dh can't eat it. Reg. Stuffing? He can't eat it. For in the gravy to thicken it? Can't eat it Butter, cream or sour cream in the potatoes? He can't eat it. Butter in the veggies and/or candied yams? Can't eat it. Milk in the pie filling or butter in the crust? Can't eat it. And Even His Mom doesn't want to alter her recipes for the entire meal. Which we get a ND are ok with. My family doesn't really gather for T-day. We pretty much go our own way most years. Eta this is probably the holiday where I stress the least.

My mom hasn't even said anything about Thanksgiving yet. I guess I'll call her tomorrow and see if she wants me to cook. The girls want to have it at our house since I'm a better cook.
