This has to be a joke! Where in he!! are kids permitted to have headphones on during class? Here they can't even have cell phones on unless it's an emergency. They should have suspended him ASAP and if it's continual 'invite' him to obtain his education elsewhere ... not fair to the other 35 students
Oh, it's Chicago not California

The article states otherwise.

Can you imagine the teacher that is forced to teach disrespectful yahoos like this who just take up space in the classroom and prevent others from learning? Maybe whatever passes for his "parent" needs to attend classes with him and monitor his behavior since he didn't learn how to behave when he should have?

Out here its "you, office, now"
No discussion. The fact that there was a discussion indicates this wasn't the 1st time and that the student was 'taught' that he was the center of whatever situation he was in. And the author validates this. Kid is destined for failure in school and life.

I think you might be called but if he's in a public school, getting sent home isn't an option that the schools seem to want to use. I find it odd that teacher unions fight tooth and nail for stuff but allows their teachers to be treated like dirt by students. That is what the unions should be fighting for.

You don't have to beat his ass for him to know you would That's all kids need to know. There's lines you never ever cross and the kids that know this, behave

Which is why your son never will i got my ass beat all the time when i was his age, and it didn't stop me. fortunately, my son cares about what others think of him, so none of this is an issue. he learned the lesson of what bad impressions can do to your opportunities in 8th grade. that was all it took. for me, i had to go to my brother's funeral before i got where that path leads.

There is no indication of what type of school this kid attends. It is easy to have a system in which kids either behave as demanded or they are on the street (or in your house).

if my son did this in his school, he would be sent home. If this had happened to my sons, not only would they have been send home, they would have sincerely wished they weren't. And no, I did not beat their asses but it was in my power to deny them their wants and they knew what the price of such disrespect would have been (I think -> they never tested that one out)

It all goes back to parenting. Sending your offspring to school doesn't mean you're done educating him/ her. If mom or dad( assuming that they are involved) explain to the child the repercussions of his actions, things like this wouldn't happen.
All this laws protecting children but none of them saying anything about misbehaving children.

I always find these type threads a little humorous. I have taught behavior disordered students in regular education settings. I have taught in multiple alternative education settings. I have taught in a juvenile corrections setting. Yes, good parenting is the answer. Bad parenting is to blame. We have that understood by all. Reality hits and we have a five, ten, fifteen year old individual who has not had good parenting nor is there a person in their life who can provide good parenting. They cause a problem. What to do? Answer: Good Parenting.

Bigger than the press reinforcing that the rules (by extrapolation: laws) don't apply to kids? And hopefully that was a teen disrespecting the teacher and smoking that joint in the picture. ... not that getting stoned on school grounds should be condoned by non-teens. Leave me in my small west coast town Yes my kids acted out. 1 spent a year in LOP (losers on patrol.... alternative class on campus) to learn that 8th grade rules WILL be adhered to

I didn't click on the link or anything - but my off-the-cuff, completely unwarranted opinion is that this kid will spend many years in prison over his lifetime.

The kid was acting up in class. Which has occurred in every state of the union since they've been states, and for the period of time prior to the Revolution when they weren't states, and all the way going back through history since schools were invented, most likely.

happyhoix, that kid wouldn't still have his headphones at our schools. But then again, he wouldn't still be enrolled here. Could that be part of the reason our crime stats differ so widely? (Chicago had more killings per capita in one weekend then we had in 8 yrs) Chicago makes excuses for behavior, doesn't back up teachers (authority figure in classrooms), and wonders why the lack of respect is rampant Yes our kids act up and get rewarded with 7 am - 5 pm school 6 days a week. And not to that extent unless they want a transfer out GS2 was just awarded that for missing assignments. His usual schedule is M W F 7-5, T was 7-3, TH 7-4. T is now 7-5. Dont like it? Too bad, so sad, he'll learn
