Devil's Advocate for a moment here:
It appears that it is the football team that has a zero-tolerance for violence policy. It makes sense that you want your football players to not be goaded into a violent reaction no matter the provocation.
Personally, I think that the situation clearly illustrates the problem with any zero-tolerance policy. Don't paint yourself into that corner.
