After the TurboTax hack, is it still 'safe' to file taxes on the web?
Planning to eFile 2014 taxes by Oct 15. TaxAct is highly rated in PC Magazine review. However, a Mac based TaxACT download product is not available, although Mac users can use TaxACT Online (web-based tax preparation).
Considering that TurboTax was hacked early this year, it would 'seem' more secure to prepare tax returns on a downloaded program, print and mail instead of doing online- no? Note: Self-employed with minuscule income, so need Schedules C and SE, which TaxAct provide. Others either do not provide these forms or provide but expensive.
Much appreciate your kind advice, thoughts. Thanks so much!

I thought the hack occurred if you selected the method of payment to be taken out of your return. I would never select that method. It went to a third party company to process and they were hacked. I don't believe any tax returns were hacked unless that option was selected. BTW I use taxact.

Thanks so much Ken. Did you prepare an file online? I have a Mac - Tax Act has no downloadable product for Mac, but can still do taxes online.

I used Turbo Tax but I want the program on my computer. I have e-filed for years and will do so in the future.
If I owed taxes, I also would never ever have the tax payment taken out of bank account or to pay for the product by having it taken out of a refund.

OtherMe - Thanks so much! I'd rather have the software in my computer too. I guess I have to use TurboTax or HR Block because TaxAct only has online for Mac.

Provided you're only trying to do TY12-14, Taxact Deluxe is available both online and in app for droid and has the schedules you're looking for
