He is smarter than a lot of them and he knows exactly what he is doing. He is playing chess with people that play checkers.
I saw Nugent around 20 years ago with Damn Yankees- let his guitar sustain a note while he ran across the stage and shot it with a flaming arrow- shame he turned to politics.

I prefer entertainers who don't need to rely on theatrics. Their music speaks for them. I saw Joe Bonamassa in concert......one of the best guitarists on the planet. It was magic. He didn't need to shoot flaming arrows, didn't ride a horse on stage, no laser light show or fog machine or scantily-dressed backup dancers. Damn, but he made those guitars sing! I never heard anything like it. It touched my soul.

Bonamassa is amazing! Another who was really, really good was Jose Feliciano. I saw him in a little hole-in-the-wall club in Los Angeles before he was much known. He played the 1812 Overture on a classical guitar. Absolutely amazing, right up to his fingers drumming the hoof beats of horses and the roar of cannons. Once he became more known I never heard him play like that again, but I always remembered he could. I'm a fan of classical music, for the most part. Flavio Sala is one I enjoy listening to. I like to watch his fretwork. You never see his thumb hook over the neck - a true, classically-trained guitarist. His music is haunting. Almost forgot to mention Richie Blackmore. I still listen to him since he's devoted himself to medieval music (always his favorite) as Blackmore's Night with his wife, Candace Night.

That's exactly it! Joe coaxed sounds out of those axes that guitars have no business making! The roar of trains and rushing winds and dust storms.
It's the mark of a true artist.
He don't need no stinking flaming arrows.

Yep. Feliciano was the same. I was absolutely stunned. I got up to leave awash in tears. It was just amazing. Joe has the same quality I heard all those years ago.

That's the only thing I remember about it- as a guitar player he is nothing special. I prefer someone like Steve Howe. I went to a LOT of concerts way back when- saw KISS and why not- it is a fun show- but nothing like Roger Waters did with The Wall- he was not relying on theatrics- he enhanced the show with them- that was amazing.

Hendrix....case closed. Sure he is great- but it is an impossible case to close- too many different styles and technical abilities- maybe Malmsteen or Satriani- or Paul Gilbert are the technical best- but speed and ability doesn't write songs. My favorite Jimi is Little Wing and Spanish Castle Magic as a close second.

Not impossible at all. Malmsteen and Satriani...boring. Bonamassa...all that flair and not one ounce of soul. Jimi wrote it, played it, lived it. Case closed.

Eh, I don't think so. So many guitarists..... so many styles. I don't think one can ever say case closed, except for maybe their own personal preference. some people think this guy is one of the greatest modern guitar players, but i doubt one of them is on this board:

Derek passed away a few years ago, djAdvocate. He was a friend of a friend (actually, the friend of a friend's father). The guy really could play, according to my friend, but you wouldn't necessarily realize it if you were looking for music as we think of it.

What is interesting that Howe does- and you see it in several songs is his mix of pick and fingers on the right hand- tricky stuff.

Derek was a true iconoclast, and a real innovator on the instrument. most guitarists that really get into the instrument respected him, but very few others do.
