lmao, yes! are you my long-lost twin? seriously, we've got the same issues haha...
I remember putting a yogurt-sized pack of cottage cheese in my lunch bag one day, excited that some company finally packaged a single serve thing that I could eat. one spoonful and I made the worst face......I tasted yogurt. turned the container over to the ingredients list and clear as day it said "contains active yogurt cultures" um, yuck. that cup went in the trash, and the rest of the package went in when I got home. I wouldn't touch it with yogurt cultures, and my roommate wouldn't go near cottage cheese.
ETA: this was meant for DQ. didnt' notice Tenn's post in between..

ditto. I keep trying them periodically, and they just don't do it for me. back in college, I kept trying honey mustard to see if it might become tolerable. don't know why I ever thought that might happen - I don't care for honey and I can't stand mustard. as I've gotten older, I can deal with honey mixed into other sauces. mustard though? I can pick mustard flavors out of pretty much anything, and have eaten salads dry rather than use a vinaigrette that has mustard seed in it. I get dressings on the side anyway, since I don't like salads drowned in it. Sweet potatoes and yams are too sweet to be part of one's dinner plate. And to then melt marshmallows on them just adds to the disgust. Swwet potatoes and yams are okay in desserts if you like that sort of thing. You know you can roast sweet potatoes without marshmallows, right? I like them with kale and mushrooms over quinoa.

There are a few foods I don't care for and in general I don't like condiments. However I don't consider myself picky because I'll try anything and if I don't like it I consider that my problem, not the chefs. I don't consider myself picky - I don't usually send food back and as long as I can pick out the mushrooms; I usually just try to avoid the veggies I don't like. A few months ago I had the first asparagus that ever tasted good. This is after trying it in 5 countries, in assorted ways, over a couple of decades.

One of my breakfast favorites is a sweet potato hash (dice sweet potato, pan fry with a little onion and garlic salt) topped with a fried egg and a few big drops of Chipotle Tabasco. The potatoes aren't super sweet, just enough to make it taste interesting with the salty and spicy stuff.

few months ago I had the first asparagus that ever tasted good.
I stick it under the broiler with some salt, pepper and olive oil. So good.

I am not really a picky eater. My biggest dislike is celery, but if it's cooked in a stew or soup I'll eat some of it cause then it doesn't taste like celery. I am also not a fan of li hing muy or chicharones. Haven't had kim chi in a long time so couldn't tell you now, but hated it as a kid. And though I haven't had the chance to try them I think I would refuse raw oysters, snails, frog, insects, pigs feet, and Rocky Mountain oysters. Too American I guess. DH on the other hand is very picky. Plus he had his gall bladder removed so can't eat a lot of high fat food. He won't eat eggs, any seafood, mayo, mushrooms, pork ribs, winter squash, sweet potato, raspberries, blackberries, cheesecake, most pie (pecan and apple are acceptable.) I am sure there are other things I'm forgetting. It makes exposing new foods to my kids kind of hard and I'm worried they'll end up picky too.

The marshmallows are easy to scrape off. But if dinner is buffet-style, I walk-on-by. Where are all these marshmallows coming from?!?! I know people do that dish once a year for thanksgiving, but are you surrounded by people who think sweet potatoes mean fluff and nothing else?

Before Gwen was born I made DH agree that he has to at least take a bite of something new. He can't make faces when he does it either. He can spit it out when she isn't looking and request I never make it again as long as we live, but while she's around he needs to pretend to be open to new things.
He's stuck by his word and we've actually found several new favorites like brussel sprouts. His mom used to cook them until they were grey stinky mush balls. I roast mine in the oven until they get crispy. Both him and Gwen suck them down faster than I can crank them out.

As I don't cook for anyone else but myself most times, I don't have them here. Yes, it is holiday time when I am a guest at homes for holiday dinners is where the potatoes with marshmallows are served. Family recipe snd tradition they say. And they are baked with brown sugar when not covered with marshmallows. Sometimes, covered with both. I just don't care for sweet potatoes or yams.

I got assigned sweet potato casserole for DH's family thanksgiving.
He got mad at me b/c I halved the sugar content and I also added lemon zest b/c it was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too sickly sweet. It needed something acidic to balance the dish. He claimed I ruined it.
Yet everyone else told me it was the best casserole they'd ever had.

I can't stand pumpkin, squash or sweet potato --- I get a allergic reaction and my throat starts to close up and I have difficulty breathing. I keep having to ask or read labels on things because my family/co-workers and friends keep forgetting that I can't eat the damn stuff.
Oatmeal -- except baked into a cookie is beyond disgusting --- It is a complete texture thing.
Blue cheese -- this tastes to me like a plastic bandaid and I can't stand it.
Horseradish --- let's just say I had a bad experience as a young child and leave it at that.
I used to hate raw onions and garlic when I was younger but I have gotten alot better since I now cook my own food. I realized that my mom was not a very good cook. My dad does a much better job and his cookies when he would bake were huge.

DS started out eating pretty much everything, then got picky as he got into preteen years. Things were nasty between his Dad and me and I think that refusing to eat something was a way of keeping some control.
When I sent him off to a boarding school in HS he started eating kimchee, ramen noodles, beef jerky and whatever the other guys were eating. I just exchanged e-mails with him last week about what they eat here in Iceland and he found it curious that they sell horsemeat for human consumption in Iceland but not in the US. (No, I^will not be bringing any home.) So, sometimes people change.

Damn right I'm picky! They made me...forced me..to eat...strained beets..an...those mashed up green peas before I had any teeth!! With NO salt, or pepper, or sugar or nothin!! And what about okra? An eggplants!!! Eggplants have nothing to do with eggs!!! It's a wonder I made it out of childhood alive!!!

There are things that I stay away from because of my Shellfish allergy, IBS and Interstitial Cystitis. Before I got sick I would try everything there's not much I wouldn't eat.
I wish I was allergic to shellfish my whole life. No I had to get that allergy when I turned 30. So I know what I'm missing.

Apparently, sweet potatoes are only used in that casserole with the marshmallows. I have friends (in their 50's) who had NEVER had sweet potatoes done any other way... I never had the 'marshmallow' casserole growing up (I've had it as an adult and I didn't need to try it a second time - I feel bad that people do such terrible things to sweet potatoes). I grew up with baked sweet potatoes (kinda boring but tasty).
As I started moving towards being a full time vegetarian - I discovered all the wonderful ways you can use sweet potatoes... they are one of my favorite foods. Most of my friends/relatives think that sweet potatoes can ONLY be used in that casserole with marshmallows - because that's the ONLY way you can cook them.

Not particularly picky, in fact, I've come to love certain foods that I loathed as a kid. DH was extremely picky when we first met, but has relaxed considerably over the years. He will eat shrimp as his only shellfish choice (he thinks the others are too much work for not enough food!) and thinks chicken wings are too much work, too. He loves peas, but thinks peapods are ridiculous.
My only picky time is about a week before a competition. Then I am careful about what I eat, in order to prevent stomach upset. I go very easy on dairy, carbs and caffeine, and the day before a competition, I don't eat any of those things. I also avoid most raw fruits and vegetables and nuts the day before. I have a small serving of a simple carb and a small banana the morning of, but that's it.
