New notification options

Hey everyone.

ProBoards is testing a new notification system, so I signed us up as beta testers for it. You've always had the option of being notified here on the forum, via email, or both. What's changed is how often you get emails and the manner in which you receive them.

Your email notifications are now:
Never
Daily
Weekly
Instant
Smart - described by Tim Camara on support

The 'smart' option exists to provide what we consider to be the most useful interval of notifications for each type. In the general case, a notification that's set to smart will trigger immediately the first time, and then not trigger again until you've completed an action that shows that you have acknowledged that notification. For example, if you have bookmarks set to instant, every time someone replies to a bookmarked thread, you'd receive a notification about it. For popular threads, this can quickly clog up your inbox. When set to smart, you'll receive a notification the first time that bookmark is replied to, but then you will not receive any more notifications about that bookmark until you view the thread again. This way you only get notified once in between visits.

Other new options:
The ability to choose specific boards you do NOT want to apply your options to

(coming very soon) The ability to be notified of new threads and/or posts.


They've already had reports that "instant" isn't always instant, so they're looking into that. Anyway, check it out if you use email notifications, and please post back here with questions or problems so they can be passed on to support.

Something odd just happened. An old PM popped to the head of my PM queue even though it appears the last entry was in 2013! I just replied to it as less than a half an hour a current one was in the top spot.

What is going on? Any idea why that PM might have floated to the head of the queue just now?

Not a clue, though it wouldn't probably have anything to do with this. The new notifications were email related rather than via the bubble on the forum.

Silly me, I thought that my IPad is playing tricks on me when I saw two messages with updates!
I guess the updates work!

The new notification options have now been rolled out to us. If you find yourself suddenly getting mass amounts of emails, please go check your notification preferences in your profile.
