I'm shocked they let you keep your pay! That's awesome! Yep for that year at least... I was surprised too. I was expecting a 20k/year pay cut + bonuses

At least you're paid well to deal with the bullshit. Try being paid peanuts and still getting the bullshit. Save your FU money, I'm tellin' ya! ?

My new job still has bullshit, just different than what I had before. Sometimes a change for change sake is a good idea. Just saying.

Carl is moving back to the MA location a change in BS, or are the regional managers the same enough that it's the same? I agree with muttley, even changing the source of the BS can be enough.

Well, in a way you will be getting a raise since you'll no longer have to pay rent plus all that extra on gas to go back and forth. Although, if you're driving to a bunch of stores, that savings on gas could be negated. Save that money, Carl. Don't spend it on a BMW!

Different BS can indeed be a relief.
Good luck finding different BS!

You'll find it right next to the unicorns east of the Emerald City. The best you can do is pick what kind of bullshit you want to put up with. You'll never find a job where there isn't any at all.

My Regional VP will remain the same but like I said my new boss once I move, the new zone director is 36 and just got promoted last week from store manager. So it will be a different sort of bullshit... How different I don't know.

Good point! Maybe I will change my mind down the road, now the focus is getting home. My friend that works for BJ's reached out to me about a job there... But my wife doesn't think with IVF next year, starting a family and everything else; maybe I don't want to also add a new job to the mix. Right now we are juggling a lot and seriously it is amazing something hasn't given yet... Knock on wood!

I'd tell the friend to at least keep passing along information. You never know and it helps to have someone on the inside as I am sure you are aware.
As I told DH it's nice to know you have options even if you don't plan on using them right this minute.

...:::"But it will get me back home (like right now) and a paycut which we figure will balance out with not having to maintain an apartment here....":::...
I imagined that you'd even out with no longer having to pay for the second residence. That $20k/year pay cut -- which you don't even have to take after all, would more than be offset.
This is incredible cawiau... if you are disciplined and bank what you used to spend on that second residence, you'd have a fat savings account in a year with minimal decrease in quality of life!
...:::"I need a no bullshit JOB to make it to 55... Or worse 60.":::...
I think those jobs ARE out there, but good friggin' luck prying them away from the people who have them!

Remember a few years ago there were management books on 'how-to' manage millennials? Ie, flex-time, family time, party time, beach time, yada? Well, now that is beginning to reverse itself - corporate leaders are getting fed up with the permissiveness, the self-absorbed behaviors - the recent help-wanted ads carry the phrase "minimum 3 years experience". That way HR can screen out the prim a-donnas and hire only people who actually want a JOB, not just a 'position'.
That affects the job market on both sides of the line - harder for fresh-outs to get that first job. And some new openings/opportunities for experienced workers. Soo - you ought not to start off an interview with "I took a year off to find myself", LOL. (5 years ago HR called that a 'gutsy move', a progressive critical thinker - today it is called 'a slacker').

Carl, being what sounds like a "floating" manager sounds like you would have the least amount of BS to deal with. You're only there for a few days; you don't have to fix the real problems, just the immediate crises! Sounds like a great plan for the year.
I second those who have said just bank the money you'll save from paying for the VT expenses; or use it to pay down debt. I'm living the hard reality of getting a significant pay raise for three years and now losing it. ($25K per year) I regret not using that raise money differently.

Thank you and yes that is definitely the plan: pay down debt and increase savings since I don't know what will happen after that year.

It is cool that they rolled out this option for you. Though I suppose it's going to be interesting if your 'decision' isn't the one they had in mind for you. Hopefully you will get a manager position closer to home. I know that commute and separate residence was rough on you.
So no more trying to become district manager?

I'm confused.....so Carl was renting an apartment as well as a house payment?
I thought they picked the house location so it was commute-able? (halfway between his location and wife's work location?)

I'm just glad you're getting back home, TheHaitian. I think that's been preying on you in more ways than one. From there, you can get a fresh perspective and decide where you want to go and what you want to do. It's great you get to keep your salary. If you're prudent you can increase your choices simply by giving yourself ample cushion to allow you to really reach for what will make you happy. As to a job with no BS - sorry, Charlie. Those don't exist. All jobs come complete with their own brand of BS.

I thought they picked the house location so it was commute-able? (halfway between his location and wife's work location?) Carl and wife bought a home that offered a reasonable commute for both of them. The transfer to where Carl is now came after that purchase so he had to rent a small place near his work and go home on weekends.
