Low Flow Toilets Equals NO FLOW Toilets in San Francisco

The stench from the sewers in that earth-loving city has become overwhelming, “especially during the dry summer months.”

Why? The low-flow toilets insisted upon (by force of law) by enlightened legislators are not saving the San Francisco environment as the science said they would. According to SF Gate, the near water-free commodes have forced city engineers to mix in 27 million pounds of “highly concentrated sodium hypochlorite” with the sewage “before it’s dumped into the bay.”

In what must be a fascinating sociological experiment, the very forces of benevolence which created the demand for low-flow toilets is now pressuring politicians to eschew chemicals. “Don’t Bleach Our Bay!” is the new environmentalist cry. Activists are claiming that the bleach will cause an “environmental disaster” and is thus not “planet-friendly.” They suggest—I kid you not—using Oxyclean, or it’s sewer equivalent, to scrub clean their effluvia.

This being a world in which politicians are driven by fear more than by conviction, those who throw the biggest tantrums usually get their way. Consequences don’t matter: what really does is how much you care. And who cares as much as an activist? Thus how long until San Francisco visitors are advised not to drink the water?

Nevermind that if they'd just used water, they wouldn't need the bleach...

I feel sorry for the immigrants who escape third world hellholes only to find that the Bay Area is no better than the place they left; corrupt politicians, crumbling infrastructure, oppressive taxes, gang warfare and now undrinkable water as well. Unfortunately, there are progressives in both political parties. The Republicans made the idiot that drafted this legislation the head of some committee in the House on energy. I forget the details.

Maybe you should blame the conservatives since Bush Sr actually signed this into law.

Considering water is a limited resource, you either have to conserve its usage or find new sources. I guess we could go back to the high-flow toilets & just start using recycled sewage water for drinking.

Water isn't a limited resource. There's more water than land on earth- and that's significant when you consider that the entire population of the planet could live in single family homes inside the State of Texas.

There's no reason not to flush as much of it as we want down our drains.

I know this will come as a shock to most people, but it's true: we really don't have limits on resources. Saying we're running out of clean water is like saying we're running out of air.

My Mom had those low flow toilets. They sucked. So-- treatment facilities are overwhelmed with not enough water mixed shit? Is anyone surprised?? I'm sure they will get billion $$$ subsidies for this-- just like every other half thought harebrained idea the gov't comes up with-- they have to literally PAY people to participate because it sucks so bad.

True, but we would have to build all new plants to desalinize the water & a massive infrastructure to get the water inland to the rest of the country. It would be cheaper to just conserve water.

As I understand it, it's not the treatment plant that's the problem but that the sewer lines leading to the plant are clogging because there's not enough water to carry the solids to the plant.

That & the fact it is a combined sewer. That is why the stench is coming to the surface. Most cities don't run a combined sewer & that is why the low-flow water conservation isn't causing this problem across the country.
