www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/kentucky-man-shoots-down-drone-hovering-over-his-backyard/ar-AAdGg2x?ocid=U305DHPThe way William Merideth sees it, it’s pretty clear-cut: a drone flying over his backyard was a well-defined invasion of privacy, analogous to a physical trespassing. Not knowing who owned it, the Kentucky man took out his shotgun and fired three blasts of Number 8 birdshot to take the drone out. "It was just right there," he told Ars. "It was hovering, I would never have shot it if it was flying. When he came down with a video camera right over my back deck, that's not going to work. I know they're neat little vehicles, but one of those uses shouldn’t be flying into people's yards and videotaping." Minutes later, a car full of four men that he didn’t recognize rolled up, "looking for a fight." "Are you the son of a b***h that shot my drone?" one said, according to Merideth. His terse reply to the men, while wearing a 10mm Glock holstered on his hip: "If you cross that sidewalk onto my property, there’s going to be another shooting."

Ha. that's great. I saw my first drone the other day. My son and I were at a park flying this remote controlled airplane and this drone was buzzing around. I was pretty surprised how high and how fast those things can fly around (and how loud). After seeing it in person, it is definitely very creepy.

I love the fact that he knew what type of ammo to use to keep it safe! Showed more common sense than the drone owner.

The guy was arrested for shooting it down. I wonder what side the law will eventually come down on?

I agree. it is like a dad that beats up someone who had previously attacked his kid. Everyone understands it, but it is still against the law.

I'd do the same. It seems to me this would fall under the same conditions as trespass. If a drone is actually hovering over your home I'd certainly see it as trespass!

i am looking into anti drone weaponry. I retired as an Electrical Engineer from a company that made the bigger military drones. I could build a transmitter to take control of the toy drone and land it in my yard. I don't know why though. I wouldn't give it back. But they couldn't arrest me for doing that.

Toy drone technology advanced faster then the law and FAA rules. They are playing catchup with safety and privacy laws.

We definitely need a law allowing us to remove drones over our property, whether that be via shot gun or other means.

It gets interesting, but I'd call the neighbor and tell him it was recording his actions and I'd be happy to remove it.

I know someone who loves all sorts of tech toys and was ahead of the curve in acquiring a drone. Which he equipped with infrared cameras and flew over my neighborhood in the name of public safety. Then he discovered there were side issues involving his personal safety, especially when he showed film in a public meeting identifying locations and speculating on the meaning of some observed activities.
I am not a tech person, but I have heard anecdotally that "non-lethal" things like lasers, magnetic pulses, electronic disruptions of all sorts can disable a drone's guidance system, still camera or video feed. I understand the aerial easement concept as it applies to power lines but, for me, you fly over my property lower than an FAA controlled chopper, you are toast. If I choose to skinny dip, enjoy an adult beverage or other recreational chemical, sun worship in the nude, etc. on my property out of view from the public right-of-way, anything intruding on my privacy is vulnerable to any legal means I can utilize to bring it down.

Ok, this story has a little detail the first one didn't: Merideth, 47, lives in Hillview, Kentucky. As WDRB-TV reports, a neighbor heard gunshots and called the police. Merideth allegedly told the police that a drone was hovering over his house, where his teen daughter (he has two) was sunbathing. So he pulled out his gun and gave it a merry death. news.yahoo.com/man-shoots-down-drone-hovering-000032027.htmlIf anything this only reinforces my thoughts that the car full of four creepers had it coming to them (and then some).
