Will they always make money and be a good company to own? Xom has a good dividend now. Will it always make money like it does now short of some kind of catastropohe? I realize the company itself could go bad, but I am more asking about the business model. Will we always need what they are selling and will it always be profitable for them to sell it?
I realize there is no exact answer, just speculate as best you can. Thanks

As far as I'm concerned XOM is the biggest company on earth. They are going nowhere. Oil is also going nowhere as it's everywhere and used in everything. The source may change as XOM has invested a ton in algea, but that is 20-30 years out - just for commercial scale. bimetalaupt has also studied oil from algea.. Natural gas and renewable energy will continue to add to the grid in the future, XOM is also vested in those areas as well. If we need energy, it's hard to imagine a world where XOM doesn't exist.

so would you say that XOM is about as safe a dividend paying stock as any other over the long term? Say next 25 years.

I would for sure. They have raised their dividend every year for the last 32-33 years, have the capital to expand when others are selling.. However, we are in a commodity route right now, so while it's at a good price right now compared to their all time high - December could be lower..
A few of us around here are keeping a close eye on things and Flow5 says that it's a mathematical certainty that commodities are set to "flash crash" in Dec.
You gotta do what's best for you and yours, but I would be expecting a bit of short term pain here though... Once things unravel completely across the mid East.. Once things get past the next phase and we have a functional global economy...

I have XOM stock my grandfather started purchasing for me when I was a kid. I add to it every so often, the dividends get reinvested and I figure I'm in for the long haul with it.

Casel, if you have held XOM since then, you are so far a head of the game you make me sick with envy. LOL

Don't be too envious - I think I have maybe 18-20 shares total, worth maybe $2k? It isn't a fortune, yet. I'll wait out this bottom folks are talking about then I'll pile some more dough into it.
