Engineering Homework Question--Please Help!

DD#1's summer school class is Engineering and Product Development. This a high school class. 

This is the assignment:

PROJECT: WRITE ENGINEERING REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR PRODUCT
In this lesson, the Apple map application illustrates how a product can fail if it is not effectively benchmarked against the competition and does not meet customer expectations. This is why requirements engineering and the engineering design phase of the product development life cycle is so important. Product failures often can be traced to poor planning at the beginning of the project.

For this assignment, identify a product or a project on which you plan to work. Using the steps in the requirements engineering process, write a three-five page paper that:

Describes the problem that your product will solve.
Identify target customers or stakeholders. Provide a brief description of their relevant characteristics.
Do a competitive analysis that identifies two or three competitors and each competitor’s key strengths and weaknesses.
Write a high-level list of engineering requirements for your product. The requirements should identify the customer need(s) that each requirement will address, the metric or measurement of the requirement, and the ideal and minimally acceptable values of the measurement.
Submission Requirements

Use standard English and write full phrases or sentences. Do not use texting abbreviations or other shortcuts.
Make the information easy to understand.
Create a ranked, numbered list of five to eight customer needs your product must meet.
Use the table format below to create a numbered list of no fewer than eight engineering requirements for your product.


DD's Question that I cannot answer:
What does Measurement Number and Unit Value mean?

Unit Value is simply just what units are being used. In this case seconds.

Take the money from your mom and spend it on hookers and blow.  Or something fun.  If it involves engineering, equations, or parsing out sentence structure, it's not fun.

I'd interpret "measurement number" as the rank index of that particular measurement, so if the table is six items long, this column would have values 1,2,3,4,5,6. So the way I would read the example row is that the most-important (i.e. rank=1) attribute is that the amount of time needed to search for and find an address be at most 1.3 seconds.

I'm assuming that the customer need(s) number here means "less than or equal to" and not "equal to" or "greater than" (which I'd figure makes no sense). I think this logical relationship should be another column or be included in the customer needs number column to make the interpretation unambiguous.

The next step will be lots of fun-- that's the Gantt chart.

So I think what it's asking for is the metrics your customer will be looking at. I'll give the example I have to my mom when she did this:

Imagine you're buying a tablet. You're looking for things like screen size, memory, price, cameras, etc. Each of those is a measurement value or metric. And each of those has a unit value that's quantifiable.

Measurement # is the sequential numbering of the list of measurements.
Customer Need Number is just mapping in from the list of customer needs (which is also sequentially numbered) which requirements this measurement is confirming.
Unit Value is already answered for you.

This is standard Project Management Requirements Definition.  Engineers or Project Managers should be able to help you with the lingo and formats being used if they are confusing.

Awesome that this is being offered at the HS level. Is this an advanced class for college prep?

All right, GRG a/k/a goldenrulegirl and msventoux, you Goofy McGoofs!

1) If the word second had been in plural form, I'd have had the same interpretation as oped! I mean really! Would one have written "inch" instead of "inches"; "mile" instead of "miles" ; "minute" instead of "minutes". So There! 

2)I wasn't doing it for her! (And not just because engineering stuff is out of my league.   

3) We have done fun stuff! We do yard work and walk the dog. That's fun! But, yes, the girls must do something academic over the summer. DD#1 was supposed to take a college math class, but she freaked out and continues to freak out about turning 18 and going to college next year. She is spoiled, she knows it, and she's scared of the real world.   Anyway, she was supposed to take MTH 112 because she took 111 last term. After bailing, she chose this engineering class through her high school's summer school program.  Just to make myself look worse, DD#2 is going into 8th grade and is taking freshman English this summer.
