Right, but after she was inundated with (I shame myself by acknowledging this word) "tweets" by angry, offended followers. Rule one of celebritydom is that if the public is making a huge stink over nothing, celebrity does not attempt to convince them they're making a huge stink over nothing. These are people who spend their lives "tweeting" on social media, following every bit of detritus spewed out by their list of celebrity twits. The last thing on Earth you want to do is suggest their criticism is irrelevant. So maybe is everyone else that is wrong. Not her Not everyone else. Just the tweeting twits with nothing better to do, and the MSM, because the last vestiges of their readership are the masses who care about celebrity hijinks.

IMO the whole thing is silly. And the frenzy over it even more so. I'm not a fan of hers; I never cared much for her "buttah, y'all" schtick. But the photo is several years old, and was done before the other issues came to light. Do I think she's an idiot? No. She started her business as a broke, divorced woman with two kids to feed and used the only skills she had to get it done. You can't be an idiot and get to where she did. Is she racially insensitive? Possibly, but no more or less so than many others who are a product of her generation and place. Given her recent history, should someone in her camp have known better than to post that? If they had a clue when it came to the media and recent social issues, of course they should have. We don't know whether it was done as a joke by her now-fired social media person, or whether said social media person did it at someone else's directive, or if the social media person was so new to her team that they honestly thought the photo was cute and didn't understand the possible ramifications. Or maybe it was none of the above. For all we know, Deen herself may have posted it, to test the waters and gauge reaction. She is no longer on TV (her sons still are the Food Network, though), and she may be looking at a possible return to television. The photo, and the reaction to it, may be her camp's way of checking public reaction. Obviously, there is still an issue. Or two.

Why is this photo offensive or "insensitive" exactly? Because if you hate black people, you aren't allowed to appreciate one of the the most beloved TV shows of all time? Because if you hate black people, you must hate Hispanic people too? Because the only reason you would dress up like someone during Halloween is to make fun of them for being born? Why do you have to color your skin to play Desi Arnez? Wear a 1940's band leader's suit, wear a wig, carry a drum or trumpet or whatever he played, and talk with a bad Spanish accent. Shout "LUCCYYY" a lot. That's enough to get the point across. Due to the historical popularity of minstral (SP?) shows, with white people in black face capering about the stage in stupid ways, there is a residual taint associated with darkening your skin. Not really fair but that's life. To avoid possibly being offensive, either don't do it or don't post pictures about it on line. Yes a stupid and minor thing, but due to Dean's previous wrong footedness when it comes to race relations, she ought to bend over backwards to avoid any hint of this kind of foolishness.

As others have remarked, the photo predates her racial faux pas by at least a year. I understand that. But it was only posted on her social media this week. If she had any sense, she would have culled her collection of photographs at the office and taken home any that had the least hint of racial insensitivity, to be enjoyed by her family, in private, leaving only the squeaky clean politically correct ones where her assistant might find and post them. She didn't do that, and now she looks stupid again, and had to fire someone who might actually have been a fabulous employee.

I didn't think the picture was racist. Just seemed like an awesome costume. I was super glad when all the shit went down with Paula Dean - she annoyed me. Getting her off TV was such a relief. I do agree with that.
